How long does it take to play a turn?

Post by DrewMatrix »

I downloaded the 1.21 version on 8/1/2004 (is that right? that's what the time stamp says) and started Scen 16 that day.

Today is 9/3/04 so that was 33 days ago. Scen 16 starts on 12/8/41 and I am now on 8/24/42 so I have played 259 days of game in 33 real days, or about 7.8 days per turn.

This is solitaire (vs the AI) so whenever I had time to rip through a few turns I could do them as fast as I wanted. I am sure that PBEM, where you need to wait for the other guy to be free before you can continue, will take longer.

I am playing the 1944 scenario on Allied side day 1st turn took about a week I was able to get through 2 or 3 turns/per turn until I had invaded Saipan, Waigan, Neomfar now I am able to do 1 turn a day. I review all the airplane report and change targets accordingly.

The standard deviation in how long it takes to play a turn is enormous. The first turn took me hours. some of the turns are a quick check on the battles that occured, load a few reinforcements on AKs. and run again in 10 minutes.

I have a PBEM game with Wobbly in New Zealand and one with Sven in Germany...them being in very different time zones makes for a good time table to play turns...while I'm at work, they are off (generally) and vice versa.

I like to take my time on turns, so the lack of time zone coordinations takes care of itself.

It kind of depends on each player in PBEM. In my 6 games, we average 1 turn a day. Some days we can get 2-3 turn in a day. I only average 4 hrs of sleep a night, plus I am the boss at work, so I can crank a turn as fast as I get them on most days.

This may be the single biggest paradox about this game. We are talking MONTHS to even play a solitaire game. PBEM, full campaign games will probably take even dedicate players over a YEAR to get through, if that!

I am a typical middle American guy. I am playing a fellow in England a PBEM game. Tonight I had a high school football game, came home to watch the end of the New Mexico-Washington State game. Tomorrow I have no fewer than 8 college football games to watch. That will take me to 1AM Sunday morning, later if I watch the Rainbow Warriors out in Hawaii. I can get a turn in Sunday. Monday is a holiday, but most Monday's in the US means Monday Night Football....a NATIONAL past time. I play baseball on Tuesday and Thursday nights. So when am i supposed to get WitP turns in, again????? Maybe you people have no lives, but folks like me, do.

One turn a day! So sometime in 2008 you will be able to tell us how it comes out! In one aspect, that is PATHETIC! In another, that's cool as hell! Paradox...

I just work and play around. I only watch football when a game i on that I just have to see. It does not control my life like some people I know. The GF and kids are my only restriction to gameplay if I so choose. But even though I am the boss at work, I am on call 24/7.

Some of my opponents get me 2 or so turns a day, some average 1 a day. but i can play while at work too.[:D]

Did I forget that I also like to read and develop software as a hobby? I actually WORK at work. About all I do at work, outside doing work, is post to this forum. I also play golf. I go to dinner parties (my wife is big-wig at the Univeristy Medical center, so that is a social necessity). I also enjoy the opera and the theater, too. I've always been able to play enough computer gaming to actually play a game in a reasonable amount of time. This a new thing. I'm afraid I will NEVER get a game even into 1943. That is sad. But in a way, it is pretty cool, too. (My hell is actually cold, so cool as hell works for me).

Bottom line, I have a life that does NOT, nor SHOULD NOT revolve around a computer game. I need a game that works with that fact if I;m to stick with one for a long term. I actually feel sorry for people who spend 80%+ of their personal time buried into a computer screen.

I was just jacking with you Zoomie. Some days I have to work 18 hours or more (been known to work 48 hours straight). But since the weather is mild for the 3rd year in a row, it is pretty slow. I do not have to go out into the field as much. Heating and Air Conditioning. I also do most of the things on your list, except play golf, never understood the game. If I wanted that little ball so bad I would not have hit it 200 yards away so that I had to chase it.

I have a guy in my employ that raises cain if he has to work on the weekend during football season. Then gripes when the other guys shove their paycheck in his face and show them the double time that weekend work pays. I expect him to quit in the next few months. Asked for a raise and I had to ask him "for what". I got other people that jump when the phone rings. If he thinks he can get better, more power to him. He will not find it.

But I do agree that it will take alot of time just to finish one blasted game.

Yea, you entrepenuers are the REAL American heroes. I grant you that! I wouldn't want your responsibilities at my stage of life for anything. You don't just have your own family to worry about, you have everyone's family in your employ to worry about. God Bless you!

And yes, I am developing a love-hate relationship with this game!

Playing the Allies against the AI, in the Campaign Game, I probably average about four 1 day turns a day. But being semi-retired, I have more time than many, and once I reach the point when the Allied counter-offensives start in earnest, I'd expect to slow down.

1 turn per day.

But, in my game, nothing is on automatic. Subs, convoys, upgrades, replacements, and every sector of the theater is on manual, so that adds to the amount of time.

Also, I need to write up my DAR each day. Admittedly, that takes far more time. It's not easy running a newspaper. You've got to stay informative and, at the same time, add enough entertainment content to keep your subscription levels up.

Admittedly, if it was not for the DAR, I wouldn't be playing.

Thayne, I do love your style on the AAR. I'm playing Jap only against AI and this game has consumed me and the NFL starts next Sunday.I have restarted a bunch of different times, each time controling a little more. Haven't got past Feb 42. Love the links and threads. lots of info positive for an ADHD guy, takes lots of organization, not positive for an ADHD guy.

Still love reading all of this stuff.

It is nice to be able to do it too. Keeps me from staring at my profit and loss columns.[:D]
I keep 2 computers at work, one is for work (accounting, call sheets, job worksheets, bids etc) the other one is my "work toy". But then I have no office per se. We have 4500 sq ft of warehouse space, metal fab shop. 300 sq ft of total office space. Me and the 2 girls that work in the "office". In that same room is the frig, microwave, TV, table w/6 chairs, 4 desks, 6 computers, 3 printers, blueprint table, 6 file cabinets.

Yesterday, we had 8 people kicked back in that room watching TV. That is how slow it is here right now. I was messing with WITP, they were watching TV and getting paid to do it.
I am just too nice. I even offered to let them go home with pay, but they were on call. They would rather stay at the office until time to go. Beats driving home, kicking off the shoes only to get called out on a call.
