Real Units

In the ship/weapon def files are the numbers in real units? A weapon does x power wich is equal to y real units.

Well, as far as modeling, if the 'scale:' parameter is set to 1, then 1 magic unit = 1 meter. Now, the SS canon ships are up-scaled from that so that they are still visible from range. Keep this in mind if you want to have your ships in amongst canon ships. I cant remeber exactly, i fee like it was 3.0 for fighters, but milo would be better qualified to give you the specifics.
