One way to check is after you boot up wait a couple minutes then load up WitP and let it run a few... Then Alt-tab out and Control-Alt-Delete... Check the task manager and see what is running and how much RAM/CPU they are sucking up.. You would be surprised what is running in the background without you even knowing it... Especially with Adobe - they like to install their acrotray and run it all the time even though you don't see it without checking the task manager.

Also, check you video card settings... Sometimes these will hog CPU time trying to make shadows and such on a 2-D game.

Hi, is there any chance that there is a problem with Service Pack 2 here? I wouldn't have thought so, but I had no problems with speed prior to installing service pack 2. Now it take 3-5 minutes to load a saved game or to save a new turn. There also seem to be numerous delays in processing some actions that were not there before. I haven't changed any drivers recently and service pack 2 is the only thing that has been installed except for virus updates.

Start-Run-Type "msconfig" without the quote marks.

Look under the startup tab. How many processes do you have with check marks in them? Every one of these is taking up memory since they are loading when you start the machine.

My machine is as optimized as you can get...only ones running are associated with my antivirus software.

Clean that startup tab out - and I guarantee your machine will run faster. Use this link for more information or google the term "msconfig"

Startup Programs

Another quick check is to look on the bottom right side of your monitor. How many icons are there? Left side is good...right side is bad. Right side icons are RUNNING programs. Left side icons are shortcuts. If you have more than a couple on the right side, then you are just slowing your machine down. Most of these will turn off when you optimize your startup tab above.

One more hint...look at your desktop icons. How many are "shortcuts" with the little arrow on them, and how many don't have the arrow. Arrow is good, no arrow is bad. I was told once (and believe it) that the icons that don't have an arrow are using memory space. This may not be a big deal if you only have a few icons, but if you have the type of screen where you can't see your desktop picture through all the icons on it, then you probably should sort through your stuff. Get rid of the ones that dont have arrows by placing the original document or program inside a folder and creating a shortcut to it. Remember, shortcuts have the arrow. If its not there, then you are just slowing your machine down.

Just a couple of tips.

Running SP2 right now. Haven't had a problem so far.

AMD 2400+
512 Ram
sound blaster live
windows XP home (service pack 2 all updates from windows as of today)
directX 9.0c (VERY important to update directX with this game)
Nvidia 5200 FX 128

nothing running in the background except system programs.... when I first started playing this I was getting huge amounts of lag, very very slow turns, once I updated to DirectX 9.0c, and Nvidia's latest driver, I have not had a problem since....

I'm with Frag here, it sounds more like driver issues then anything else

http://nvidia.com/page/home

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx

hope you can track it down

128meg Video
XP Professional

With WITP running, plus my browser and various background task I am averaging 12 to18 percent usage. I am also running service pack 2.

I agree that it must be machine specific. I'm setting at zero if you account for the fact I have 3 other programs running. Did notice though that I would stay at 97%+ while at the combat reports screen while a turn was running. While processing the turn I would be between 5 and 40 percent.

RE: CPU pegged at 90+% even in idle game

Post by ZOOMIE1980 »

ORIGINAL: kew

I have the same issue as the poster (80-90%). My computer was however able to complete a single turn in 7-8 minutes. I'm not sure what happened, but the other day my computer started going a lot slower. Now it takes 20 minutes to complete a turn[:o]! When I look at the usage it's pegged at a 100 with small drops at perfect intervals.

Any tips for discovering what the source of this is would be most appreciated.[&o] And yes I've run anti spy-ware prgrams and Norton to check for viruses.

Well I know for a fact it is NOT a driver problem. I am running WitP on two completely different machines, one and old notebook with an old 8MB ATI Mobility graphics card and a Maestro 2E sound card and one is a PIV 2.4GHz with all intel video and sound hardware. Both have latest available drivers from the manufacturers. Both exhibit the exact same problem, the processes tab show 85-95% CPU usage for WitP with the game in idle mode.

I have another game, an older RTS game in the Command and Conquer Series that uses the same system dlls (verfied by loading both games under Visual Studio .NET 2003). The RTS game uses almost 0% in idle, WitP uses a consistant 85-95%. It doesn't seem to affect other app performance as the other apps will take the CPU if they are in the foreground.

I was just curious as to what was requesting so much CPU.

I hate to disagree with you zoomie but I just reinstalled all of my drivers from my driver recovery disk and all is well now. After reinstalling I alt tabbed out and the game was running with out taking up much cpu time. Also my game turns are back down to 6-7 minutes.

Frag, is this what you need? Hope it's not over kill...

It always cracks me up when people run DxDiag but don't push the test buttons [:D]

That a laptop? wondering about the AGP status being "not available"

Ok then, not a problem then ... so reinstalling your drivers made the idle problem go away?

Perhaps Microsoft's SP2 broke some links ... ever since I installed it, it tells me my Chinese Version of FrontPage is not installed right ... would be real worried if I owned the Chinese version instead of the English version [:D]

yeah, I've noticed few odd things about sp2. The oddest thing is that I don't have the first one installed on my machine. Wouldn't it ask me to install that first then go onto the second one?....

Naw, SP2 superceeds SP1 ... it is no longer required. One of the nice things microsoft actually does is make the service packs complete so nothing previous apart from the install media is needed to get to current.

Well, it's NOT a driver problem because of two things.

1) I have the exact same issue on two completely differenct machines, both with up to date drivers.

2) I have the benifit of having Visual Studio on one of the machines, where i can load programs with full tracing on and see the .dll loads as they go by. I have another game that loads pretty much the same list of system and driver .dlls that WitP does. That game does not have the same problem as WitP does. If it were a driver problem I would expect to see the same general problem on any game that uses those driver .dlls. But I don't.

The issue could still be something being called in a driver .dll. but in the way it is being called. Maybe WitP does some kind of resource polling of some sort, I don't know. It doesn;t completely rull out a driver problem, but these observations make the probability that it is some sort of driver issue pretty low.

I've got the same cpu issue - also had it with UV for years. Especially annoying on my laptop, the fan is going full throttle in long cycles. Never managed to get rid of it by upgrading drivers.
