Joel,

Thanks...

Will Africa and South America have important roles in the game? Historically not much happened there (except North Africa of course). Will South America be controlled by the Allies?

Brazil is WA from the start (it has one resource IIRC). Other South American areas are neutral (some contain resources as well).

Africa is controlled by whatever colonial power controlled any of the territories. Angola and Mozambique belong to Portugal for example. Today's Ethiopia starts the game as Italian controlled AOI (Africa Orientale Italiana). So that means that most of Africa is WA controlled. There are some resources scattered over Africa.

In 99% of games you won't see any activity in any of the South American and African countries, except where it occured historically. There also may be some naval/submarine activities around west coast of Africa and near Pacific Canal.

That's too bad.

Many many years ago I played a board game called GLOBAL WAR by SPI, and I was hooked on wargames ever since. Only a few have attempted the same "global" scope of the war, Hearts of Iron, Axis and Allies, Risk, etc.

With WaW I had hoped that there could be political and military effects on South America and Africa. During the war many countries were PRO-Axis even though they did not fight they secretly wished and hoped that the Allies would lose. Countries such as Iraq, Palestine, Argentina, and others were all Pro-Axis to some degree. It would be great to see this in a game.

Waiting patiently for the release...[:D]

There is one activity you will see. Neutral countries will give a portion of their resources to whomever can establish a connection/tranport link with the country. The way the system works, their is a bias to giving the resources to Germany, than Japan, so if a link can be established, they are at the head of the line for this "free trade". Of course, no one said it would be easy for the Axis to establish a connection/transport link with Iraq or Argentina. This does however lead in most cases to resources from Spain, Turkey and Sweden, among others going to Germany before they go to the Allies.

Joel,

Thanks for the clarification. I see that this will work really nice.

How is Switzerland going to be treated? Is it an island in the middle of Europe? Can it be conquered? If so, can Germany reap from all the gold stashed there?

Currently Switzerland has no resources and has a small army so there is no advantage to attacking Switzerland. It would be easy to give Switzerland a resource point if we decide they warrent it (of course this has game balance implications as all the resources would be traded to Germany for most of the game). I never thought of the money issue when designing the resource system. Does this really deserve a resource point? Keep in mind England and Scotland combined only have 3 resources and greater Germany has 7.

LOL, gold in Swiss bank as "resuorce"... [X(]

I think Switzerland is fine as it is. If it has even one resource - every GE player will attack it immediatelly, which wouldn't be very historic.

Better to just take the free trade and not attack. Remember attacking will damage the resource center and cost you 10 supply points to repair and get what you will be getting for free. This doesn't even mention the losses you might take when you attack. However, I'm not advocating giving Switzerland a resource, just pointing out we could do it if someone would give us a good enough reason to do it.

Is trade that significant with Switzerland?

I can see that trade with Balkans, Sweden and even South America would be important, but Switzerland?

I don't recall ever reading anything about Swiss trade. Certainly the world's gold reserves were there (or at Fort Knox USA). The only reason Germany did not invade Switzerland (and they did think about it) was that it was a means to launder stolen art, gold, etc. as well as a "safety valve" escape route. In other words it was more a political reason to stay out, but I was referring more to a military reason.

What would be the benefits? What would be the negative effects? Maybe if Switzerland is invaded other 3rd world countries trading with Germany or Japan (or Italy) would cease trade.

Anyway, I thought it be cool to wipe out little 'ol Switz. LOL [:D]

Definitely, but you can do it now if you want, you don't need no stinkin' resources [:D]

I always invade Afghanistan as WA, and oftenly Tibet as China, though as Joel mentioned these are just a waste of supply points (that are especially precious for China). No resources there. I just can't help myself [:D] The very emptiness of those areas is provoking enough!

Yes, emptiness. I like your train of thought. Similarly Switzerland has always been a thorn in my WW2 studies... I mean why did Hitler invade Denmark (land of legos and cookies)??? And not Switzerland where BILLIONS in gold are just waiting for the taking...

Well I'm not ashamed...I'm 40 just turned this year. Been playing war games since around 1975-76. I own 2 sets of Global War UNPUNCHED, along with hundreds of other games, most never opened and mint condition...I'm a war game warmonger... and a map geek... ahhh, I admit it.[&o]
