Sigint: how does work?

Until now I've been unable to find out how sigint reports work. Why I get a radio report about a specific unit? This means that that unit is going on the air very often? Or is it fully random? Why I get reports coming from my bases? Somebody states are "phatom reports"... is this correct?

Sig Int is different for the Japanese and the allied. Japanese SigInt is mostly useless intercepts of Radio Traffic from various locations. You could only guess what is happening at the coordinates you are given. On the other hand SigInt for the allied is much better, cause of the historic breaking of the Japanese Encryption Code. Here you get detailed Information about Units, Troops or location. To get a idea about it play some turns against the AI, then look at the SigInt Reports in your save Game Folder. Compare the SigInt Reports for the Jap and Aliied Sides.

I've always wondered why I get reports of radio traffic for my own bases. I mean, are the guys in the radio room that incompetent? Surely the Allies don't have submarines in ALL of my ports, sending home messages.

I dunno if the Japanese stuff is that useless.

I think if a ship or TF leaves harbor or some movement happens then a message is sent.

Might not be detailed but indicates some sort of action is going on.

I notice most allied intercepted stuff is bases far from Japanese bases. Its random but got feeling that some Japanese operator is trying to tune into US radio to listen to music lol.

Serious think it has to do with a ship leaving or if you order planes or ship to or from a base that base has a chance to send out a message.

I don't bother with this at all. Now, if it gave ship location and destination intel, then I would. After all, this is how Japan's major fleet units were tracked. "Radio Transmissions" messages don't mean a thing to me.

Allied SIGINT gives LCU destination including when loaded on a ship. So with SIGINT you can find out about impending invasions. I've used it to good effect against the ai so far, in the single PBEM I played (just threw in the towel very early) it was not as effective (I tried to lay some subs to ambush one convoy, for another I only had a few PT's available and found not only the japanese army headquarter I was expecting but also a rather big convoy alltogether (3 PT do not match 20 cargoes in a shooting mood)).

I find it quite useful though I'd prefer a way where you actually get info on where a certain hex is (radio trafic with just X/Y coordinates can take a bit of work to track down, it could equally be the Japanese carrier fleet returning to Japan after Ph or a lonely submarine on it's patrol off Dutch Harbor). What I'd like to see is if a location is land, then give the country/area it's in, if sea give the sea name (Central Pacific, Bay of bengal etc.). Possibly add the nearest base (and remove the exact location as I'm not sure any intercept could be that easily traingulated).

The radio transmissions from your own bases seem rather disturbing at first. I think the first time I noticed this I send massive ASW forces off Prince Rupert to look for a source;-). In the end I decided it must be Prince Rupert's quarter master reporting to his Japanese Secret Service superiors about his sucessful diversion of supply and other resources to his backwater base:-).

P.S.: On the Prince Rupert issue, anyone else I recommend to remove PR from the auto convoy system, that old traitor draws enough from the supply net via road already, not need to let him work with his crony the harbormaster at San Fransisco as well.

This is why my wishlist item was a "Go To Hex XX,YY" function.
