What are the different types of ships?

I see from screenshots what appears to be about 4-5 different ship types

How do carriers work?

How many air units can operate from them, I'm assuming the numbers will be limited (I've read elsewhere that air units represent 100-500 planes, etc). Carriers would carry closer to 100 planes correct? How do they get new planes? Do they need to be in dock?

How many land units does a transport carry?

Carriers can carry one carrier air unit (the "size", e.g. the attack power, of the unit is modified through research).

A transport has two values: the number of units that can move via the transport (much like rail capacity) and the number of units that can amphibiously invade via the transport. The latter can be increased by research, not sure about the former.

I think Joel explained once that CV fleet unit is moddled as ~150 CV planes. IJN starts with 4 CVs, USN with 2 or 3, RN with 2 so do your math.

"CV" and "CV air" are two units. They are usually attached to one another but can be used separately. Sometimes I unload my UK CV air units in Malta, Gibraltar or England and use them as land based FAA bombers, thus reducing risk to CVs themselves. They work great from land bases.

CVs then, without their CV airwing, can also function as separate naval unit, but that does not make much sense and is risky.

When CV is involved in combat - both sub-units (CV and CV air) can suffer damages, depending on the nature of the combat. Usually the airwing gets damaged or destroyed, and your "naked" CV should be returned to port ASAP and new CV air unit produced to serve on ship. If there's a surface battle, then CV can suffer damage, while CV air survives, and in that case lands on the nearest land area (I've never seen that, but I think it's theoretically possible.)
