PBEM Questions

I recently decided to start up an UV PBEM game with a friend. We were running the Coral Sea scenario as a good primer (his first time playing), and he was playing Japan. He sent me the first turn he completed, and I moved it into my saved folder slot. When I tried to load it, it didn't even show up in the list. After scanning the rulebook and not finding solutions, I was hoping someone might be able to give me a primer in the world of PBEM? From him starting to me replying, I was wondering what the basic steps might be for us to take.....

1. Japan chooses PBEM option and selects scenario
2. Japan plays turn clicks on end turn and save game in slot of choice from slot 2
3. Japan emails save file to Allied player (on consequetive turns he will also need to attach the combat save (slot 1)
4. Allied player saves save file in the save folder
5. Select PBEM option for game type and select load a saved game
6. Select saved game and enter password
7. Play turn, press end turn save in slot and just sent save file to Japan and continue as above

I've got another PBEM question, if you don't mind. Can you save a PBEM turn and open it again later, before you send it to your opponent. As an example, say you get your PBEM turn in your e-mail, and you think you've got a free half an hour or so to play it. But in the middle of it, one of your kids, who you're supposed to be watching, trips and cuts her knee really badly. Can I save what I've done so far, tend to my crying child, and then come back and finish?

Yes just click on the save button on the top left hand corner of the screen and you can open it again any number of times.
the end turn button is just that end of turn for sending out the PBEM and combat resolves.

Thanks for the reply on this. I believe my friend and I have done all of the above steps. He started a game as Japan, did his turn, saved it, and then sent it to me. I got the file. It was called "save003.dat" and was 171 kb. I took that file, put it into my Uncommon Valor save folder, and then loaded the game from a desktop icon.

I then clicked on the PBEM option, and then on the load saved game option.

The only game to come up was an Autosave from a recent game I had been playing. (I just reinstalled the game recently...) There was no file from my friend there.

Any ideas what we might be doing wrong?.......

(Been itching to play this for weeks now, but we keep hitting snags....)

Should say uv003_aname_adate.uvs uv001_combatsave_adate.uvs
example uv003_ib4269_12_04_42.uvs uv001_combatsave_12_03_42.uvs
make sure you guy's are ending the turn then saving the game
with a name in slot 3.
click end turn red button then you pick slot three it highlights on the right then type in a name and then save it.

One thing CMDRTOAST (sp?)told me, as we're beginning my first game, is to delete previous games that will be in your save file under similar names. Also, look around on that save file, cause I almost missed my combat save file 'way over to the right of the file box out of sight. We've successfully exchanged our first moves. Go IJN!

I've started my first pbem game and have some questions.

1) Is slot 1 reserved by the game as the combat save ?
2) Does the combat save get traded back-n-forth every turn (even if no combat happened?
3) When you bring in uv001... & uv00X ... files, do you need to delete/overwrite the existing files. I ask as the game I started had a pre-existing uv004 ... file and when my
opponent sent me his file it was uv004 .... I put it in slot 05 and uv appeared to ignore it. I deleted my uv004 ... file and all of a sudden uv recognized the file that I had saved.

I guess my question revolves around the "slots". if you start a pbem game in slot 4, does it always have to remain there on subsequent turns. I'd like to keep a running copy of all the turns.

Slot-1 is for the combat save, the IJN player only sends this file to the allied
player, you should always watch the combat turn as you may see a sighting
report of a CV force in the vacinity of your operations and such, even if that
is the only thing that happened in the turn. ( could be life or death for your forces.)

Most of us that save files create a folder for each apponant and move the files
there, I keep a copy of every Emailed turn instead and clean them out from time
to time.
This also helps in figuring out what transpired at that time of combat thru comments in the email.

I'm also in my first ever PBEM game. So far, so good- except my opponent taunts my Emperor![:@] In reply to your #1. Yes- but you'll find it in your save directory, not within the game save menus(I eventually figured this one out) #2 Yes; the Japanese player sends the actual game turn (once he's saved it), the Combat Report, and the Combat Save. The US player will send back his move, which, when you move it into your game save directory, will ask you if you want it to overwrite the previous move. Yes you do, and it's your move... #3 Yes, keep your games well away from other saves, and consistantly in the same slot; i.e.:slot 15. Good luck.
