Thunderbolt turret

This might seem like a stupid question, but I'm a stickler for details.
Am I right in thinking the turret on the Thunderbolt fighter operates the same way as point-defense batteries on a starship? In other words, it locks onto the first enemy target it finds and fires away ... but it has to be a target that you've locked onto via the fighter HUD.
Correct?
And its output doesn't effect the primary cannon's energy level ... or does it?
