Hi, Elite Chinese liberating China.
Japanese ground losses:
422 casualties reported
Guns lost 10
Vehicles lost 4
Allied ground losses:
7070 casualties reported
Guns lost 66
The old move 1 unit into a hex. Enemy orders an attack expecting overwhelming force. Instead more units move into hex before attack. Result attack is slaughtered. In this case 75k Chinese made attack against 1 Divison but instead found 200k Japanese.

It *is* a bit annoying. I almost think that land combat should have multiple attack phases, or maybe units that moved during the current turn get a defensive penalty and no fortification bonus of any kind?ORIGINAL: Mogami

You mean to say that Mogami has lost three carriers for... nothing? Talk about a waste of naval assets. Sorry, but I can't see the Americans surrending under these conditions.

Hi The current carrier score is
Lexington, Enterprise sunk
Zuikaku, Zuhio, Ryujo sunk.
IJN CV have also sunk at least 6 USN CA.
I don't expect the Allies to ever surrender.

China report to follow with next turn. There are going to be some very bloody battles there soon. [PS moving more units in is not "gamey" - think of it as a faint and trap maneuvre. I knew he had major forces near so my mistake ]

Yeah, I don't see why one unit can't move forward. Basically it is either a recon or faint move. Happens all the time.

RE: Mog at the Palace
Hi, The Battle of Cannae on 2 August, 216 BC serves as a classic example of a double-envelopment maneuver, a way for an inferior force to defeat a superior force on open terrain. The WITP player Academy will for years in the future use Mogami-Sveint as an example of applying this tactic on a front wide scale.
Sceen shots will be posted in a few more turns.

RE: Mog at the Palace
Haha this will be interesting. I suppose you're referring to Wuchow?
The situation in China merits description in some further detail. From North to South, by city.
Fighting around Yenen has been static. While the Japanese outnumber the Chinese, Japan endures high casaulties to bombardment every day. We did a weak attempt at an encirclement and as expected this drew more Japanese reinforecements. The situation is stable.
Fighting on the Homan/Hsinyang road has been sporadic. Currently the Japanese are bottled up in Hsinyang. Attempts to cut supply lines have been unsuccessful, but our troops are slowly taking the city while inflicting superior casaulties. Emphasis in slowly; about 1 offensive per week. There are major Chinese reserves in Homan and Ichang.
The Japanese narrowly escaped a Stalingrad at Changsa, and their weakened troops have retreated to Kuikang. In a massive offensive China is currently assaulting Nanchang - Kuikang will be the next battle where we hope to bag a large amount of prisoners.
Canton/Wuchow: For a long time the Chinese besieged Canton (this was a new experiment for me). While bombardment casaulties were heavy, our Swordfish did land a few torpedoes, including one BB. Currently I have retreated to Wuchow where I expect to delay the enemy while the Nanchang offensive concludes.
Why not defend Wuchow? If I defended everywhere I wouldn't be able to make any offensives and I would lose initiative.

Oh, Mogami, just what are your carriers doing? Raiding?
So you're risking you carriers for a few transports?

RE: Mog at the Palace
Oh yes, almost forgot, Allied objectives in China:
a) Make Japan use as much supplies and reserves as possible (success so far, Zeros in China? definitively a success)
b) Inflict casaulties (doing good so far)
c) Liberate all non-coastal cities (what can I say, I'm ambitious)
d) Late war, capture ports for Allied use (or perhaps invade Manchuria)

RE: Mog at the Palace
There seems to be some hidden Japanese divisions somewhere. The Japanese have enough forces to take something. Mogami might be moving some men around behind the front lines to overload on one side.

RE: Mog at the Palace
Hi, Well here is China before Operation begins. Chinese are being allowed to advance in Central China while Japanese forces build up on the flanks.
The plan is simple. Large Chinese Army advances while Japanese move to cut them off and eventually destroy them. Chinese forces in the South are to be pushed back allowing freedom of movement for Southern Japanese force. Southern force has assault value of over 4k. Northern Force of around 3k. Once combined they will over power the cut off Chinese. Japanese reserves along the coast will block movement in that direction. The Chinese will draw supply from Nanchang but I don't think it will maintain that large a force in combat for very long.

Cannae in China
Hi, Here is situation 3 days later. Japanese have pushed Southern Chinese out of Wuchow and captured Kwelin. The RR to Hengchow is open. Hengchow is believed held by 30k Chinese. Fewer then 20k Chinese are in Changsha and surrounding hexes.
The original plan when first conceived sought to also destroy the Southern Chinese forces but introducing a BB TF to bombard them at Canton compelled their withdraw and after I was unable to surround them at Wuchow I decided to just go after the Central Force.
I have been waiting for several months to allow units to reach 100 percent readiness for objectives where the decisive battles will be fought. (Changsha, Hengchow and Nanchang.)
Very early in the war I almost just did the old pile on one city at a time operation. But when I saw the Chinese moving forward in mass I began to dream of a battle where a large portion could be cut off and destroyed. It is very hard to surround an enemy force but if they advance into you they in effect surround themselves. I thought of Cannae where the Roman's advanced into the enemy center. They were "winning" but then the Carthagian cav moved across their rear and the flanks suddenly turned and there the Romans were surrounded and destroyed. I begin withdrawing units from my center in Jan.
Since I sought to destroy 2 seperate Chinese forces I built the Southern Japanese force larger then the Northern force and used Yenen and Hsinyang as holding actions to allow the Northern force freedom of movement when the time came.
