Hit Detection

When using bolt weapons, how does hit detection work? Is it based on the ship's radius, model faces, or shield.mag properties? Right now my A-Wing is nigh on impossible to hit because its radius is only about 14 m. I've artificially inflated it to 30 by adding an invisible rod through it, but it doesn't seem to improve hit percentage by much. Is there another way to get more shots to connect?
