RE: War in the pacific crashes

Just to add to this thread...

I purchased and downloaded WITP a couple of days ago so I have V. 1.21 (supposedly).
I'm running an AMD XP 2400+ Processor, ATI AIW9700Pro graphic card, 768 Meg RAM, Windows XP (service pack 2), Direct X 9.0c, have run the Direct X analysis with no errors.

The game starts out just fine but crashes back to the startup screen (with a black box superimposed over 3/4's of it). The frustrating thing is that this happens at various times and can't be traced to any specific funtion, keystroke, or action. Sometimes it crashes during the orders phase, sometimes during the operations phase, sometimes at the save screen... I've managed to get three days run without a problem and then had a crash after setting three TF orders and a bombing run before even finishing the order phase.

I've tried changing my monitor resolution (I have a 21 inch Viewsonic P815) from my normal 1600x1200 but that didn't affect anything. Experimented with disabling visual themes in the Compatibilty settings (it crashed from the initial splash screen then), I've adjusted Windows Page file settings from manual to automatic, I've shut down other programs like Thunderbird to prevent an e-mail download during the game etc etc... but all to no avail.... the game runs beautifully and then crashes without warning.

Oh yea, and although the sound plays fine I renamed the sound folder "Nosound" and that didn't fix things either.

I'm outta ideas here. Any suggestions? Is this something that V 1.3 should fix?

Frustrated... but the game is incredible, would just like to experience it for longer than 15 minutes at a time ;) Doing saves every 5 minutes is really getting tedious!

HELP!

Could the Service Pack 2 be causing problems?

That is always a possiblity, of course. Anyone else running Service Pack 2 without encountering these problems?

Also.. when I report my crash to Microsoft, I get the following link and message:

"Solution Not Found: Contact Morgan Multimedia

Thank you for submitting an error report. An error occurred in:

Morgan Stream Switcher

Microsoft is currently not aware of a solution for the problem that you reported. Microsoft did not create, nor does it provide technical support for Morgan Stream Switcher. Morgan Stream Switcher was created by Morgan Multimedia. If you would like to find out if a solution is available, or obtain assistance and troubleshooting information contact Morgan Multimedia. For more information, see the Morgan Multimedia Web site.

I'm not sure if this is relevant. Is "Morgan Stream Switcher" embedded in WITP? Could this be something that some other game has installed on my system that is conflicting?

The software you seem to have problems with is *not* part of this game.

It never ceases to amaze me just how much crap gets installed by other software that people don't know about.

Service pack 2 is not a problem but that doesn't mean that other stuff installed and running doesn't have a problem with service pack 2.

Amen to that! And I have a LOT of games installed. I'm going to try to track down that Morgan StreamSwitcher and delete it out of my system and then see what happens. Anyway thanks for ruling it out as being a part of WITP!

Good News...

The problem turned out to be the very simple fact that I had Windows XP "Desktop Manager" running. I killed that and WITP runs perfectly. I suspect that "Morgan Switcher" is something that Windows XP includes to manage the different desktops, but, if so, why don't they admit it when they give you the crash analysis?

Oh well, I'm going to bed happy now. Managed to play till December 12th in the Campaign game with no crashes.

Thanks again for clearing up the "Morgan Switcher" issue - it had me running down the wrong path.

I too am experiencing crashes in what appears to be the task force move phase. However, it does not happen every day. I can go five or six game days without it happening and then it crashes. I am running version 1.21. I have a pentium 4, 2.53 Ghz processor. I run Windows XP Media Edition. I have 512k of ram. My video card is a Nividia Geforce 4 Mk440.

Either that or send a private message to Mr. Frag to make sure someone sees it and can direct you to the correction.

I get crashes to the desk top now- but only when bombers attack at night. Did not have this problem until I downloaded the windows service pak 2. Game was running great until then.[:D]

I know this post is not going to be useful, but I would like to say a few comments about the "crashes".

I bought the game on august and I NEVER experienced a crash/reboot. The game works very well. Now also know that my PC is almost a "dinosaur": P3, only 128 megas RAM, and I have a sh*tty video card. I can see that most of the people who have that crash "problem" have a more advanced hardware than me, so what is going on? I am sure most of you have the correct drivers, correct Media Player, etc. But I suspect you have installed a lot of sh*t in your HD. You should be careful when you install software in Micro$tuff. They install what you want + a lot of useless stuff (which you do NOT need at all). Soon or later you will come across problems. If possible, do not use "custom installations". DO choose what you want, nothing else.

Please, don't get me wrong. I am not trying to say "I'm smart, you are not". In fact, I too learned the hard way. So start doing personal installations, do NOT accept extra stuff. NEVER. You will get rid of many problems.
