Omaha Beach Scenario

I've just gotten BiN and skimmed through the tutorial (quickly).
Jumped right in to the Omaha scenario, got the troops on the beach
and then couldn't get them to move off of it, nor attack. Naval gun fire
destroyed everything in sight/range. The troops just sat there. When the
german troops arrived (like turn 8), they wasted my troops, which still refused
to attack.

I know there must be something very simple that I overlooked ?????

Sounds like you didn't land the troops. Once on the beach make sure you press the anchor symbol to land (this is when you take attrition during landing). If not landed the units have a defense value of 1... very easy kills if not stacked with a good defending unit that has already landed.
