I'd just like to speak up in support of mikemike's position: refighting WWII in the Pacific exactly as it occurred is not my idea of fun... although it's good education! I'd temper that with the observation that you can get a lot of mileage out of the editor.

Production Control

For those of us that take your article as the production bible, may I suggest that you identify the city for each airframe factory suggested for shut down or retooling. You identify engine factories well, just do the same for the rest of the production pipeline. It took me 7 hours to set up Jap turn 1 in my most recent PBEM and too much of that time was endless recycling throught Jap cities looking for Ida and her siblings. Also I fully expect (or at least fervently hope) that you will update article for June 1942 and thereafter.

Hi, The easy method to manage production

step one: click on intell screen

step two: click on industry/resource avail

step three: sort by item. Now you can locate factories by item and location.

One caveat to this is that plants not producing anything ((x) x 0) will not appear on the list.

greetings...

I followed this thread with great interest, however, i would like to hear from the starter of this excellent thread some new thoughts after couple of months of playing...

Do you really find that research is worth invested supply? (in my PBEM game after a month my rd of Oscar II is something about 20,... i have about 200 damaged points for Oscar - changed production from Ida, Nate to oscar II, etc). Is it a better to let it to auto-convert and keep supply and HI points for production?

I think my comments at the time were purely an analysis of numbers, and not the mechanics. In other words i was saying, "If you are going to research, research in the planes that will do you the most good." On paper, research looks good. In practice, it appears to be a bad deal. In any case, I really don't like the design.

In my games, I leave R&D factories Halted, with No repair option set, and do not convert them to anything else. I repair them as the arrival date of the aircraft gets closer. Once the aircraft they are "researching" is operational, I will expand or covert. Until then, they basically do not exist. Fundamentally, I think it is wrong that we know the outcome of the r&d before we begin. I know I want particular aircraft and should ignore others. I am not seeking to relive history, but I think that foreknowledge of the results of a particular research effort negates much of the risks of R&D while maintaining the benefits. So, I elect not to research at all.

Hmmm... yep, I just missed it. All things being equal, I would probably convert those to A6M2's, but I have become more cognizant of IJA/IJN rivalry since then. Switching Nates to Zeros would probably not go over well with the IJA. If assuming the limitation of the IJA/IJN rivalry is important to you as the Japanese player, I would put both Nate plants into researching Oscars, or simply halt them until Oscars were ready to produce.

hey Oznoyng any plans on updating your aircraft research/production thoughts? was wondering what changes you might make to your old plans and new ideas youve come up with since playing the game since this first came out. would love to hear what your new thoughts on these are now.

Resurrecting this useful thread to ask a question. Oznoyng says:
In my games, I leave R&D factories Halted, with No repair option set, and do not convert them to anything else. I repair them as the arrival date of the aircraft gets closer.

My question is simple: what does "No repair/repair" do in R&D factories? Does it simply mean that if that factory is bombed, it won't be repaired?

More generally, in the production screens, "repair" either repairs bombing damage or "damage" from converting a factory, right?

Sorry if these are dumb questions; I've been playing this game for six months, but mainly as the Allies, and now it's time to learn how to play Japan. :)

Hi, RD factories work like regular factories only they produce RD points not ac.
So RD factory that looked like this (10)x0 would not be producing any RD points it would have to repair (9)x1 to start producing RD points (1 RD point per 100 RD factories) So if you do not repair them they will not do RD.
Also if you repair them then the day the AC becomes available to build the factories start building them. Otherwise you have to repair them.

Thanks for the clear explanation, Mogami. So, do you do research? Judging by this thread, many players do not.

Hi, I don't touch the factories doing RD. about the only thing I do is I build factories that are less then size 10 to size 10 (well they go 0-2-4-8-16) So I build them to 16 but not all at once. When the base has 40k or so of supply I expand 1 factory. I don't do Naval or Merchant yards but I do expand the repair yards.

Well, BUMP! [:D]

This looks like an eminently useful thread, but it's rather old. Before I add it to the 'Must Read List', it would be great if a someone who knows a bit about Japanese production could tell me if it's not outdated. It seems to be full of good thoughts on pilot training and research, too. Anyway, a blast from the past...

Just playing a Jap game, don't agree on stopping A6M2-N, KB is not all that invincible as TF58, it need every fighter it could get. 24 extra float fighters could be a difference,

Oznoyng's posts (OP, #7, #22) are still gospel as regards stock. Brilliant posts, actually, esp. considering when they were written (less than three weeks after release[X(]).

You have to make some adjustments for the various mods, as appropriate.

I would at this time like to add my two cents. A strategic concern for the Japanese is mid-war Fighter production. To this end I would propose the following. As you atrt the game with some 700+ Nates in your pool, and since the difference between a Nate and an Oscar is almost nil. Do this. At the beginning of the game convert all Nate factories to Tojo and all Oscar factories to Tonies. Keep 36 Oscars in your pool for reinforcement squadrons and immediately convert the new Oscar squadrons to Nate as they appear. This will give you maximum tony and Tojo production in 1942-1943 and thus greater pilot survivability. The Oscar II plant that is in Tokyo should be allowed to repair and then produce just 36 Oscar II aircraft. Again these aircraft are only to be used to flesh out your new Oscar squadrons and then convert to Tojo or Tony. Once 36 aircraft have been built convert factory to Tonies. This will give you 110 more Tonies a month after they have all been repaired and will give the Allied player a serious headache over the skies of the Pacific. Sit back and have fun.
