Turkey before Barbarossa

Post by Cheesehead »

Has anyone ever seen the Germans invade Turkey in '41 before DOW Soviet Union? How did this work out? It seems like a viable alternative if Russian diplomacy prevents a '41 Barbarossa...

only after Axis had taken Egypt in 1940 and could threaten Turkey from the south. Russia fell, but I'm not sure it was because of attacking from occupied Turkey. IMHO the Axis troops in Turkey would have been just as effectively deployed on the main front.

I used to go after Turkey all the time in WiF 5. I'm not sure whether I ever went with that plan in FE, though I must at least have considered it. I definitelly consider Turkey a viable option to enhance Barbarossa (and possibly support the attack on Egypt/Palestine).

P.S.: I haven't played WiF for two years at least (I'm not counting betaing CWiF), so I'm not 100% certain on the WiF FE map and forces available (particularly Turkey).

I've never seen a '41 Turkey, but in one game where the Axis had Gibralter, they did attack Turkey in '42 to prepare for a preemptive '43 mini-Barbarossa. The Axis won that game, though instead of "Turning Point Stalingrad" it was "Turning Point Kiev". Russia was pretty dominant at the end.

never seen Turkey attacked in either version. Seems like the effort used there could be better used on the main front.
