Resolution selection won't work

Post by toddtreadway »

When I am in the options screen, there are three options for resolution available. The only one I can select is 1024. The 1152 and 1280 resolutions can't be selected. They aren't greyed out or anything. It's just that when I click on their buttons there is a click as if a valid selection was made, but the resolution doesn't change.

Yes, I have a computer that can use higher resolutions.

Also, will there be any way to run it at a higher resolution, such as 1600 x 1200?

RE: Resolution selection won't work

Todd,

Using the same retail installation you have, resolution switches are working here. I wonder if the game is detecting some problem with the switch, because normally as soon as you click on the new resolution, the game switches to that resolution and gives you 10 seconds to click on a button to accept the resolution change or it switches back (for safety). If you're not getting anything to happen, perhaps one of the guys at Koios Works can figure it out.

Are you fully up to date as far as video drivers go? What kind of video card and monitor do you have?

Regards,

I have noticed this behavior for wide screen monitors that do not list the exact resolution the game is asking for. Do 1152 x 864 or 1280 x 960 appear in your monitor settings? The only other way you will get this behavior is if the game does not detect at least 64MB of video memory. Unfortunately the game does not provide informative feedback (like grayed out items) for either case.

Yes, I'm up to date on drivers. I'm using an nvidia GeForce 5900.

Here is my DXDiag, though I have no idea what any of it means nor whether it is helpful here.

Also, when I click the button, it sounds like it is clicking twice, which makes me think it has somehow detected that I don't like the new setting.

BTW, is there a file where I can edit the resolution manually?

The DXDiag is in the attachment.

The DXDiag shows that you are running your desktop at 1600 x 1200 x 32. Very impressive! However, a desktop at that resolutions needs close to 60MB of video memory for just one screen buffer. Tack on windowing image data, and you may be bringing your total video memory free down below 64MB. Do you get the same results if you lower your desktop resolution? There is no way to force the game resolution. The game is using some defensive checks to keep itself from crashing or harming your computer.

You are on the money for the double click behavior. The game is accepting that you clicked it, then it realizes it cannot change, and then selects the default resolution again causing another click noise.

Just out of curiousity, what happens when you try to change resolution with your font size set to normal (ref: your text problem in the other thread.) I am wondering if the two are related?

I changed the desktop resolution to 800x600, and also 1024x768, and also changed the font size to normal.

Still can't change the resolution though.

Where is the game configuration file found? Maybe I can just go in and manually set it.

Unfortunately there isn't a way to force the resolution even through manual configuration. What happens if you set your desktop to 1152 x 864?

Still doesn't work even if I set the desktop to lower resolution settings (including 1152). Oh well. 1024x768 it is. A little more eye strain won't kill me anyway! [X(]

I am having the exact same problem. I am stuck at 1024x768 on a native 1280x1024 flat panel. I also have an nvidia card (GF4600). I have included my dxdiag.

Any suggestions? My drivers are up to date.

Thanks,

Pahom

I don't have a solution, just wanted to mention that I have the same type of flat panel, native 1280x1024 and have had no problems running in all 3 resolutions. I have an ATI card, so maybe something with Nvidia cards?

Sorry you guys are having such problems on such nice systems!

Here's the display modes that the game supports:

1024 x 758 x 60Hz
1024 x 758 x 75Hz
1152 x 864 x 60Hz
1152 x 864 x 75Hz
1280 x 960 x 60Hz
1280 x 960 x 75Hz

I have an nVIDIA Ti 4600 at home, but I have a CRT. These modes are supported. It could be the nVIDIA driver is hiding some of the display modes from DirectX because of monitor settings. Check with the nVIDIA desktop management tool for a list of your compatible resolutions.

Here's something else to try: Is your display stretching smaller resolutions to fit the screen? If there is a way to toggle stretching off, maybe that would help.

Above all, be careful of forcing resolution settings!

I hope this helps,

Marshall

Figured out problem

Post by toddtreadway »

I figured out the problem with my nvidia flat screen problem. Pahom this should work for you also.

The card uses resolutions of 1280x1024 and has no 1152x864 setting. You need to manually add those resolutions by going to the screen properties and then into the nvidia desktop manager software, then add the new resolutions.

Worked for me, and it might work for you also Pahom.

Hope this helps.[:)]
