Ise / Hyuga conversions

Post by KPAX »

13.2.3 of the manual states:

"..... The Ise and Hyuga undergo a major conversion to add large contingent of float planes (it remains a BB type ship"

1. What the heck does that mean ?

2. Has anyone converted one of these ?

3. If you have converted one of these can you please give the technical data on it ?

4. Are you happy with the conversion ?

5. Is this "... large contingency of float planes..." a bunch of scout planes ? Fighters ? Bombers ? Torp planes ? How many of each ?

6. "... It remains a BB type ship..." Again what does this mean ? What is the weapons it has ?

7. So does it become a decent BB with some bombers/trop/fighters capability ? Or it not a ruined ship, because it is not good at either ?

Any insights would be appreciated.

Th Japanese replaced some of the main guns with a short flight deck (think Moskva) so that it could handle a larger contingent of float planes. I haven't done it in the game so I can't speak to the exact details of what you will get on the game board. If you like CS/AV type ships you will get two more that have some large guns. I think these things had a a/c capacity in the 20-30 range after the conversion. Might be nice for supporting invasion groups, unfortunately it comes after most of the Japanese amphib operations are over.

I'm not sure if i'll do this when I get to that point in my games either.

Hi, I advise against converting these 2 ships. The reason they were converted was Japan had a shortage of CV and the 2 BB were intended to add 44 Divebombers to a planned battle down around PI. They were built for a floatplane divebomber that is not included in the present scenario 15 (or any scenario where these conversions have occured) So you have to use existing float plane types. The intended (absent) divebomber could load 800kg bombs. The floatplanes you have to use carry 60kg bombs. To make the conversions worth while will require a scenario where these floatplanes are included. (I'd form 2 groups and assign one to each BB)
Japan does not need 2 more CS at the expense of 2 BB. If you maintain your carrier force you will not need the conversions even with the proper floatplane included.

Mogami,

Thanks our the specifics / thoughts.

Now the two CS conversions to CVL/CVE are well worth it, right ?

-Why the E16A (Paul) was not included in the scenario?

Hi, There are only so many slots for aircraft types. In my modified scenario I removed the Jean and installed the Paul, Then I added a group for each BB (but do not assign them to BB or you will have to do the conversions)
I also added the Tabby. You have to decide what aircraft types to include because the bitmap only has room for art for so many. (Subchaser did the art and he is most excellent)

Shouldn't the I-400s have Paul groups too? Rather than the Glens we are stuck with now...

Mogami. Any chance you can send Lemurs your modded data? I've always agreed with you on the Ise conversions being pointless unless they were the strike version. Not much point converting them into CS BBs.

The conversion of the CS and ISE is done how ?

1. Like the conversion of the AKs to ARs, etc ? An option that you have to select ? Or,

2. Is it like an upgrade to any other ship, and is automatic if you have YES selected, and are in port with <5 SYS damage ?

Do not want to convert by accident. [X(]
