Hi, Japan can Allied can't (as Japan click "expand" to build.
Shipyards spend points to repair. The larger the shipyard the more ships they can work on. AR fix 4 ships. So they can repair without shipyard or help 4 ships without spending points.
AD will also repair DD
AS will repair submarines
A Naval HQ will help repair.
repair also occurs in ports based on size but a shipyard is better
You need a size 5 to repair ship systems like gunmounts or radar

Mogami .... another "in the know" type, posted that AR stack, does that mean AR can only help 4 ships, so if you have 4 AR ( the supposed max for stacking) does that mean they will raise the port value by 4 for 4 ships and no others?
If it is ( as the rules say) 4 ships, how does the computer determine what 4 ships they will help? Since there is no input from the player.

Always wondered why the allies can't? Would be very help full if you could atleast expand the repair yards in Aus and India as they are so small?

Very true, especially if you have a couple CAs damaged or, lord forbid, a BB. Have fun making it back to SF.
RE: ship repair
The excuse I was given for no increase for the allies is that it uses supplies to increase and since the allies have a nearly endless supply of it, they would have an unfair advantage.

Dont see how that pans out..... the allies did have pleanty of supplies avaiable to them and heavy equipment.... so if they had wanted to build a new BB sized dry dock at Sindney naval dock yard + machine shops etc ( space premitting ) I can't see any reason why not????

Would you rather build a new dry dock for repairs ? Or build a new shipyard to produce CVs ? You can't have both ? The US shipbuilding capacity was arguable stretched to its limit during the war. So if you build new repair yards, you are sacrificing resources that are building ships... You want a new repair yards ? Give up the Iowa ? Or a couple CVs ? That is why the allies can't expand anything... It costs them nothing to expand - only some supplies of which they recieve 60,000 free each turn anyways... If the allied production was modelled like Japan's (the allies forced to BUILD all their ships and planes instead of being free) then the allies could probably expand some production.. But since it is not, they have no expansion abilities...

RE: ship repair
Just convert more AKs to ARs and distribute them among your smaller naval dockyards. I believe Garden Island dockyard in Sydney was building throughout the duration of the war so really, should dockyards be really capable of expanding in the game much at all? Almost everything appears to be paced too fast in this sim.

ty
and is there a way to increase/enlarge repair shipyard?
Each ship in a port has a chance of being repaired 1 or 2 points of damage. Smaller ships have bigger chances of repairs, and will do well even on small ports. Big ships have very small chances of repair, which are almost zero when they are in small ports; the repair chance for big ships increases to reasonable levels when the big ship is on a big port. Notice that big ship/small ship really means durability, so a submarine is much more difficult to repair than a destroyer.
Then you have your bonuses: AS and AD increase the chance of repairs of submarines and destroyers, but only to a maximum count of 2 ships. The manual is quite confusing on this, saying that they increase the size of the port by 2, but what really means is that for the chances of repair for those 2 ships is that as if the port was 2 sizes higher.
AR is the same thing, but can help 4 ships and increases the chance as if the port was only 1 size larger. Finally you have your repair points, produced by repair shipyards; if you have enough repair points, then one or more ships are helped with doubled repair chances, and the repair points are consumed.
There is no limit on how many ships a port (even a small one) can repair. Therefore, you can move all of your damaged units to say Pearl Harbor and have them repaired faster there. On the other hand, ARs don't stack (you can't help 8 ships by having 2 AR boats on the port) - or at least so my tests indicated some time ago. Also, ARs really don't help much if you got a bunch of small ships on a big port, the reason being that the repairs chance per ship will already be high. Finally, it is unclear (at least to me) if an AR on a size=10 port (or AS/AD on a size=9+ port) will have any effect at all, as the port size may be capped at 10 during the calculations; that I didn't test.

RE: ship repair
The response from one of the original testers was that AR do stack up to 4 in a port and that they do help a size 10 port, even though the rules clearly say an Ar helps 4 ships only.

@fbastos: ty! do they repair faster if I put 3 instead of 5 ships in a size 8 or 9 or 10 port? same question goes for ports with/without repair shipyard!

Taiyo, from what I tested, the number of ships doesn't seem to have any effect; all seem to be repaired at the same rate.
On the other side, you really want to have your repair points spent on the big ships, not on the small ones. If you have 20 ships of different sizes on a port with repair yards, you may end up spending repair points on small ships which would be repaired fast at any case.
Only the developers will be able to inform how the repair points are allocated between different ships. Let's try to post that as a question on a new thread, and see if they will go for it.
