strategy guide ?

Battles In Normandy is the third game in the Decisive Battles game series. Battles in Normandy recreates all aspects of the Normandy campaign, from the landings on the first day to the final climax of the campaign at Falaise. Strategic Studies Group rewrote the Decisive Battles game engine for Battles in Normandy with a host of new special rules for amphibious and airborne operations, plus a huge number of other enhancements.

strategy guide ?

Post by scout1 »

Is there any strategy guide regarding game play for the DBWWII ? I know BiN is brand new, but it has roots in KP. I'm not looking for a "combined arms" lesson, but rather one specific to the game play to speed up my familiarity with the gaming system.

Scout,
I would also suggest reviewing the after action reports (AAR's) on the ssg website (www.ssg.com.au). These were designed to show off various new elements of the game, as well as having some good strategy from a couple of great players.

Yeah a strat guide would be nice.
The last turn based wargame i played was Steel Panthers 2, but that was tactical. then ive played some HTTR which i find good, and very logical. You can surround and outflank your opponent.
But BIN, and KP im having troubles with, i have little clue on how to attack, and if i form defensive lines im unable to counter attack. And when i attack even with 10-1+ odds i often end up with A1-D1 or *-*.
i am beginning to understand the concept of attacking with few units and let the Arty do the shifts and then im more aware of what terrain im attacking into.
But a Strategy guide to show the noobs how to move units and so on would be nice.

I like strat guides, but I like the game to have been around a while, too. It was very noticeable that the guides for Combat Mission 2 and Highway to the Reich were prepared after very extensive play testing, so the authors really knew what they were talking about. The trouble with strat guides released too early - like the great majority of the printed stuff (like Prima), is that they rarely contain anything you can't discover quickly for yourself or knew before you started.

Sure, BiN is the same system as KP, but even so many of the best BiN specific strategies are probably still being explored, or even yet to be discovered.

I wouldn't want a strat guide (that I was expected to pay for) to "show the noobs how to move units and so on" rather than having more useful content. That should be (and is) in the manual.

When i think strat guide i don't this of Prima but rather something like the one for HTTR that was really good and a great additon to the manual.

And your right Prima guides a released to early to be usefull and don't contain anything you didn't already know.

What i would like is one that explains to me how to play stratigic wargames, i have never done so befor. ive played tactical. but its not the same.
Sure i know that you should surround your enemy and all that stuff but how to carry it out i have no clue.

In the montys landing scenario i played against the axis with -computer, all my forces got tied up around caen defending across the major river. I tried sending 4 divisions south but they stopped dead in there tracks becouse of the lack of supply and all the briges along the river was blown. Later when i got more supplyes i got across but then the axis had got so much reinforcement send to em that they pushed me back across again, and i ended up with yet another long line of defense along the river.
I seem to be unable to mount any succesfull attacks of anykind. A guide that would explain how this is done and just the basic principles of warfar at division level would be great.

My best advice is to read some books on the campaign (Eisenhower's Lieutenants by Weigly and Six Armies in Normandy by Keegan IIRC) and then play the game against the AI following the strategy and tactics from the historical campaign. This is how I did it a long, long time ago, first reading history books and then when wargames first came out using those to further my understanding of operational and strategic issues. There are several excellant sites mentioned in previous posts for games machanics and the turotials and manual are a good strating point for that, but don't know of any sources that explains basic principles of war at divisional level with respects to gaming. Don't know if this helps.
