flag bug again

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

flag bug again

Post by Larry Holt »

Its been reported that during battles, a blue flag sometimes pops up. I believe that this is the icon that is used for the retreat off map hexes. I find that I can get it to appear when I hit the semi-colon. If I click on unit from another formation it disappears. If I click on the unit that was the current one when I hit the semi-colon key or another unit in its formation (G0, G1, G2, G3, etc.) the flag comes back. This seems to be only a visible bug and seems to not effect game play but I am not completely sure.

That is the objective flag for formations. I have had that happen in a few game. I could not move a number of formations forward becouse of it. Most times you can change its location, but sometimes not.

The blue flag is an objective area, which is key to use properly if you plan to work very well with command control. It disappears, because every platoon has a different objective to plot to, but it must be set manually, as you'll notice all units start out with 222,222 as the objective. You must have accidently hit the blue flag icon and set one up for a platoon. When playing command control, units will be given movement radius's which won't use up any of their movement orders. I think you might find using command control quite fascinating, Larry, as this is the first time I've ever used it, with SPWAW, and it adds a bit of strategy to your planning.

When you aren't using CC, the computer still allows you to use the blue flag objective setting up, but it doesn't affect your game (unless of course you're giving the computer command of some of your platoons).

This is interesting. I have never played SP3 because I do not like the different scale (I like it up close and personal!) so I do not know much about giving platoons objectives and command control. In a scenario I have designed I find that at times units will refuse to move in any direction despite being in contact and having a full move allowance. Is this related?

Yes I reported that "flag bug" when units were retreating, but strangely, I haven't seen it since it first appeared. that was several campaign attempts ago, and I had forgotten all about it. Odd...

In regards to retreating units and flags...

It's been my experience that the flag is placed back at that unit's HQ unit (D0 or whatever) to simulate the fact that it has to get back into contact before it can go about its business again.

I really like using the objective flags as they certainly add a bit more of a 'role playing' aspect and a bit of narrative to the battle.
