Carrier airgroup withdrawl

Post by Tophat »

Ok,
In patch 2.30...........What happens in the following situation:

Big Carrier battle.......a CV is reduced to a Hulk but doesn't sink.

Question:
If you send that carrier back home for repairs, will the very useful airgroups you adopted from it disappear on you? And if so How soon might it happen?

Yours to squander as you see fit for as long as they last. If you have detachments from the squadrons they won't draw any replacement aircraft/pilots. If you get the whole squadron it'll draw replacements like normally while ashore.

Hi,

I've never seen or heard of them automatically withdrawing............. but then I've never seen a MAJOR PRIZE winning lottery ticket either.......and apparently they do exist. [8|]

You can send back a CV and keep her airgroups on theater. A bit gamey but works perfectly.

If you have a very damaged CV (SYS > 50), she can no more launch planes but may disembark them in a port (by using port cranes and so on), so you may unload all planes from a CV before sending it back, even with heavy damage.

Sub-units created by planes diverting from a damaged CV will receive no more plane or pilots replacement. If you withdraw them, the planes will go back to the unit choosen in the same hex and the pilots to the general pilot pool. They will not automatically go to the mother unit, in the theater or back in Pearl, but will be used as normal replacements.

If the damaged CV sinks and the mother unit disappears with it, then you have only sub-units remaining that will be slowly reduced to a handfull of planes and pilots until you withdraw them definetly and the unit disappears for good, as the mother unit will not be recreated.

Not sure if I would call this gamey. I do it and all my opponents seem to do it. Both the Allies and Japanese did it as well. Mostly Japanese, but the Allies did transfer carrier units for short term operations out of Lunga, I believe.

Remember, we mostly play 17 and 19, and are not playing historical games anyway. I think the Allies just have to do it in #19 to have any sort of chance of stopping an early Japanese auto victory.

I had an interesting occurrance. I had the Yorktown badly beaten up South of PM, so I took her into Cairns (she was SYS:72 and FLT: 85 when she arrived). I landed her squadrons and flew them to PM. After the FLT was reduced to zero I sailed her to Noumea and sent her to Pearl. Later I sent the Long Island to ferry her squadrons to Noumea for use in that area. Twice, the squadron aboard (a whole squadron not a det) disappeared off the Long Island as she neared Noumea. As in vanished. Later the other two squadrons just up and disappeared from the land bases where they were located. [:@]

I had EXACTLY the same thing happen in my game with Condor (AAR thread, shameless plug..[:D]) Left the groups from the sunken Zuikaku and crip Hiryu in theater; later on, like a few days, I withdrew something on the order of 2-3 Val groups, in order to strengthen the squadrons due to extreme losses. Anyhow, the Vals showed in the reinforcment page, but near when they were to return, dropped off it and never showed up. Then, my Val pool never would accumulate, as the missing squadrons were apparently filing back up. Finally, it did stop sucking Val replacements, but I have never seen the squadrons again. And if you go look at the CVs back home, they don't show there either. I am praying, that if the CV's ever come home to Capistrano(Truk) that the missing groups will reappear.

So, based on this experience, I would definitely never withdraw carrier air again. Too much of a risk to do it, as these missing groups have been gone for MONTHS and are quite needed now that the American is pressing on the frontier..ala the CONDOR armada.
