FG 33/40?

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

FG 33/40?

Post by Kuroshio Apocal »

I noticed that in early-war FJ units, this weapon (FG 33/40) is standard issue (at least in SP:WaW). However, I can't find any information on it. Re-enactment units list the KAR98K, which leads me to believe that teh FG33/40 is nothing more than a airborne-modified KAR98K. Is this the case, or am I off-track once again?

Thanks.

You will find some info about this weapon in:

http://www.geocities.com/Augusta/8172/panzerfaust7.htm

Actually this weapon don't appears. I suspect it is a modified K98... but I am not sure, too.

Hope this helps.

Edited: If you check this, they speak about modified K98, but don't name the name...

There is minor information about the G 33/40 at www.geocities.com/fallschirm_jh/weapons.html

According to a German source - www.lexikonderwehrmacht.de - the "Gewehr 33/40" was originally manufactured in Brno (former CSSR) and then used by the Wehrmacht. From 1940 it was mainly issued to mountain troops.

This weapon originated as a Czech 16/33 Carbine which was taken in service as model 33 rifle.
Germans then gave it to their airborne and mountain units and named it Gew 33/40. There was also a folding stock version.

some stats:
Overall length 39,1 in
Barrel length 19.29 in
Muzzle velocity approx 2400 fps
Weight 7.9 lb

Hi.

If this Czech weapon was used mainly by mountain troops, and the main weapons for the FJ were Mausers K98 variants and Mp38/40...
If any troops in the German army received top priority, semi-automatic and automatic weapons, theye were the FJ.
why is the FG 33/40 the main armament of early war FJ, until 1943, then?

In designed scenarios I usually remove the Gew33/40 of the Paras for the more common Kar98 or MP40. Similar with the FG42 toys. Very few of the Para boys actually had them. I would prefer to have the standard german Paras in the OOB equipped with either the K98 or MP40 by default, no matter what time in the 2nd world war.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm thinking about doing some real heavy editing to the OOBs (for my own scenarios) just to reflect this sort of thing.

Also... rarity of certain types of individual weapons? IE. we you upgrade units your chances of getting rare weapons is reasonable. Call me crazy but for some reason, I don't think every SS rifle squad had a full complement of StG 44s.

SS are pretty easy going compared to the Supermen Soviet Motocycle squads in MCLV (#3 for me ) "A Vital Bridge". These guys leap over buildings in a single bound ... stop speeding locomotives dead in their tracks ... its a bird, its a plane ... no, its a Soviet Motocrycle Squad!!!

Just for fun, I lined up six German rifle squadsand a Pz IIc against one each of the above. Everybody emptied their magazines, in most cases from the adjacent hex, not until the tank and all the infantry fired did anything happen, for the first five + tank there was no reduction in manpower whatsoever! Finally, as the sixth Ge rifle squad fired, manpower reduced by two and the Soviets fell back.

Man, those guys bring a new definition to "tough". Maybe someone overdid it, just a teeny bit?
