ancient history question

Post by DIEMAN »

Here is my question for all the ancient history experts among us... If you are from Rome, you are called a Roman. If you are from Greece, you are called a Greek. So what do you call a guy from Pergamum? Pergamummian??? Pergamese??? Someone please help me out on this one, it is slowly driving me insane........

How about 'Pergaman'? It follows logic with 'Roman'....

Really, I have no idea..

Those people of Pergamus were Greeks as much as Athenians or Spartans were.So if the question is:how whould you call a citisen of N.Y. then i guess that the right thing whould be to say-Pergamian.Atleat thats what God Poseidon told me in one of my many ancient sea journeys.

Hi,

The people from this area were called Phrygians in the pre-christ period.

I do recall reading somewhere that people from the town of Pergamum were called Lesbians - I will have to visit it sometime, sounds interesting.

Hope this helps,

Mytilene or (Aeolic) Lesvos is an island very close to the region of Pergamos, 10 min with the boat.

Sorry for that but my knowledge of Hellenic language hardly allows my to agree with you in the PERGAMISIOS or PERGAMINOS.These simply dont make sence in Greek.[:)].
As about Lesbos, yes its the island of Mytilene in Aegean close to Minor Asia cost but has nothing to do with how the people of Pergamos called themselfs.
