50mm mortar ranges

Post by Warrior2 »

July 1943 on the East Front, and my boys are getting killed by the Russian 50mm mortars, which have a range of 18, while my 50mm's only have a range of 10. Somebody in Berlin needs to pay for this!

This is one of the reasons the Germans took their 50mm mortars out of service. Compare the range of the Japanese 50mm Type 89 (13 hexes) and the US 60mm M2 (40 hexes!). The German 50mm leGrW36 in 8.3 has a range of 44 (11 hexes).

Hi KG,

Talking of mortars...

Can you tell me why the British 2 inch mortar does not come with smoke ammo in SP?

My understanding is that the primary purpose of this very common weapon (issued to every Brit platoon) was for smoke and flares; rather than as a anti-personelle weapon.

BTW, the Brit 2 inch mortar has a range of 10 hexes (500 yards)
The Brit 3 inch a range of 64 (3200 yards)
SPWAW OOB does not have the Brit "Stokes" 3 inch mortar. That had a more lethal shell, but a much shorter range (around 1500 yards).
The Brit 4.2 inch mortar a range of 128 (6400 yards :-)

Tanks,

Cross, smoke ammo isn't allocated in the editor for artillery and mortar units. Apparently it is randomly allocated by the mech.exe, depending on the class of weapon. According to the SPWaW manual (written when 5.0 was released): "The smoke allowance for howitzers, artillery, mortars and heavy mortars has been increased. Light mortars receive no smoke." So, the player has no control over this. It is hard-coded.

The UK 2 in mortar, as well as the German 50mm, are classed as light mortars. So, no smoke.
