Sveint v Andy - The Battle of JAVA Allied Side
This AAR will only cover the battle for Java that I think is upcoming in the near future in my game with Sveint.
As a subthread to the main AAR that Sveint and I have going I will update this thread with a lot more details surrounding my intentions/ plans and deployments relating the the defence of Java. (I wont cover the whole war as it would take to long !!!)
As a result of the classified nature of this info Sveint has agreed not to look at this thread.
This technique has worked very well as pioneered by PZB and Wobbly and will hopefully allow everyone to see the folly of my strategic thinking !!!
OK onto detail.
My intentions in this game have been from day 1 to hold Java at all costs to buy time. This was behind all my decision making to date I want to tie Sveint up in a pit fight in Java as to be blunt I can replace ship and aircraft losses … he cannot !!!.
I want to bleed him dry on Java make him commit and tie him down with forts and rested experienced troops.
I evacuated Malaya to give me the striking force to attempt the defence although I have been shocked at how much time Sveint has given me to fort up. (Singapore fell mid January six weeks later and hardly even a raid against Java)
The evacuation of Singapore and all of my other decisions have been based around the fact that if I fight for Java Sveint must come and take it from me. (If he bypasses it to go for India I am going to get a nasty shock !!!)
As a result I have gathered a reasonably impressive amount of firepower on the island to defend it both land sea and air.
I also have over 400,000 tonnes of supplies scattered throughout the bases which will help.
As I see it strategically Sveint can do one of four things
I) Ignore Java (this is my worst nightmare if he ignores me he has a lot of firepower to throw elsewhere although I think I would make him pay in 1943 for it if he does
II) Invade a lvl 0 or 1 unguarded port i.e. Kragen
III) Invade a large port
IV) Invade multiple ports
I hope he goes for II. It is the most obvious and easiest for him to get ashore but it is very much a poisoned chalice as he will face a logistical nightmare. If this is the route he goes down I will make him pay (I hope !!!)
Hitting Batavia or another heavily guarded port is more risky and will cost more in the initial waves BUT will greatly simplify logistics if he can take the port this is a real worry hence my concentration of force at the three good ports on Java.
IV. is very risky as I will hit some unguarded convoys but is probably the best of all answers IMHO as he will split my defence and guarantee at least one good port in all probabilit. I cannot re iterate enough that securing a good port IMO has to be Sveints no 1 priority.
My strongest hope is that he goes for Kragen which is why I am leaving it relatively unguarded. If he commits 150k troops to a malaria infested base in range of my PT boats/ Subs and LBA with the slow unload time and requirement for LRCAP I will hopefully make him suffer.
If Sveint lands there in force he could split my army but the advantage I have is that Kragen is a nasty place to depend on for logistics as a low level port and airfield it will take a long time to unload and will degrade troops a lot even if he manages to take it.
On the other hand a direct invasion in the north with overwhelming force into Batavia while expensive for Sveint would be an interesting and viable strategy. I am committing the entire 1st Dutch Division to guard against this.
2nd Dutch Division will secure other bases in the north from invasion by rotating Bn sized formations in and out of advanced bases.(The maximum disruption and fatigue I will allow are 20 / 40 before rotating units any longer and they take to long to recover)
My next few posts will cover the Orbat of Allied forces involved in the defence
The Allied ORBAT for the upcoming battle is as follows
ABDA HQ (Area of responsibility Northern Java)
1st Dutch Division (Objective Defend Batavia)
1st Dutch Regiment (Batavia)
2nd Dutch Regiment (Batavia)
4th Dutch Regiment (Batavia)
6th Dutch Regiment (Batavia)
(This formation is well rested and is at damn near full strength it is responsible for the defence of Batavia)
2nd Dutch Division (Tjilipt and Northern Java anti Para duties))
Barisan Regt
12 Dutch Independent Inf Bns
(Barisin Regt is at 50% strength and the Inf Bns vary from 20% - 100% the role of this formation is to act as garrison force for Tjilipt and and to maintain one Bn at each nothern Java base except Batavia).
I have the following additional formations that I will provide more details of when I get a chance in the next few days.
Philipine Force (Tjilipt in ABDA reserve recovering)
18th (Composite) Armoured Division (This is my reaction / strike force consisting of three light armoured regiments (1 Aus plus 2 US) and 5 strong and 1 weak experienced infantry bdes ( 4 Aus/. 1 USMC and 1 NZ) plus artillery/ AA and good base force support.)
I intend to use this formation as three strong battle groups for reaction purposes.
Main Malaya Army Force responsible for South Java
1st Commonwealth Division (Soerbijou)
2nd Commonwealth Division (Soerbijou)
3rd Commonwealth Division (Soerbijou and Madion)
FMSV Bde (Kragen Garrison Force)
In addition I have two air HQ’s and multiple base forces (about 40 I think in total in various states of repair)
Later posts will outline the naval and air forces I have available.
Remember If I am still fighting in August on Java I view the campaign and losses worthwhile.
I am buying time with my men and ships let battle commence !!!!

RE: Sveint v Andy - The Battle of JAVA Allied Side
The NZ and one Aus Bde are at sea on way to Java Now.
Each of my 3 designated commonwealth Divisions has 3 Inf Bgdes
1st CW 6th 8th Indian and 1st Malay
2nd CW 15th Indian 2nd Malay FMSV
3rd CW SSVF 28th Indian and 22nd Indian.
Base Status
Merak 1/1/2
Batavia 6/5/6
Badoeng 0/3/2
Tjiltjap 4/3/3
Djokjakarta 0/2/2
Madeoin 0/4/3
Kragen 1/1/2
Soerbaja 9/5/6
Malang 0/4/1
In the air I have about 700 aircraft committed to Java at the moment with a few groups of B17's and B24's ready to ship in if I get the chance.
My main weakness is my fighter weapon.
I have about 250 fighters/fighter bombers of which about 180 are Warhawks (95) / Tomahawks (20)/ F4F's (50) or Hurricanes (16).
I am short of replacements for these types so I could lose air superiority quite easily.
I am going to ship in two more Hurricane Sqns that upgrade to Spits in June this will give me 50 Spits by the end of June early July.
That will give me a wing of three Hurricane Sqns that are upgradable and will reduce my dependence on Warhawks.
I have overstacked Soerbijou at present so I will be dispersing aircraft to smaller fields over the next few turns.
Naval Forces
I have two light surface gps at the moment based around a CL and 5 DD's in each gp in Java and 2 CV's (1 US 1 UK) 16 CL/CA and CLAA backed by 36 DD's at Columbo ready to move to assist if required
Also a couple of PT Boat Gps and about 30 Subs.
I have 1 ML as well.
And I am using subs and the ML to mine all bases as heavily as possible now the Soerbijou is Lvl 9 Port.
The convoy with 3rd NZ A and 3rd Aus Bde are about a week out from Java.
It is now 26th March I expect an attack within the next week and I anticipate the opening move to be a massive air attack to neutralise my air force.

RE: Sveint v Andy - The Battle of JAVA Allied Side
Quiet day a BB Group was sighted off of Java probably on way for a bombardment run.
Vildebeests operating at extreme range bombed all 4 BB’s scoring several hits.
Unfortunately no penetration hits so damage minimal.
Dispersal of aircraft to bases around Java continues new radar sites became operational at three separate base units this turn increasing early warning of inbound raids.
Allied air strikes will suffer from co ordination problems as a result of the dispersal this but having learned the lessons of Malaya and the Phillipines at least the allies will not lose the entire airforce in a single day.
The convoy with two elite Anzac Brigades inches closer to Java.
These are the last elements of the allied ground orbat for the upcoming battle.
A CV battlegroup departs Columbo harbour heading south to act as cover if the IJN tries to hit Western Java
Allied GHQ and SEAC command remains concerned about the threat to India and the general lack of movement on the Rangoon front so no further ground formations are earmarked for the Java campaign

RE: Sveint v Andy - The Battle of JAVA Allied Side
In my first game against the AI I'm involved in a protracted defence of Java. All the Manila submarine force and the Dutch subs were on patrol between Java and Borneo, they racked up a -lot- of kills.
In the end though the AI invaded Sumatra, which only had a token defence, and then I was bombed back into the stone age from Singapore and all the Sumatra bases, which the could easily supply.
Aren't you worried about sveint doing the same here? what airbases has he got in range of Java at the moment? Malaya?

RE: Sveint v Andy - The Battle of JAVA Allied Side
You are correct that I am taking a risk.
Sveint has some of Sumatra and most of Borneo and all of Malaya.
When he comes for me it will be in force.
But if I can meet his large raids with large numbers of fighters I will whittle his experienced fighter and bomber crews down.
His airforce will cause problems in the long term what I am really afraid of is a bombardment tf catching my airforce on the ground hence my dispersal of assets.
This is going to be (I hope) a brutal batle of atrittion in the air If i fight battles over Java then I hope to really hammer his experienced aircrews.
He will suffer ops losses/ pilot losses where I will recover pilots as I am fighting over my airfields.
In the long run his ability to easily rotate units to rest them out of the fighting line will wear down my fighters as there is no where for me to let mine rest.
Should be fun though ;P

RE: Sveint v Andy - The Battle of JAVA Allied Side
OK a series of good results for the allies although my Vildebeest gps are decimated.
4 fish into two IJN BB's is worth it though
The bombardment hut a lot though Batavia needs more mines
I have noticed from recon reports over 200 IJ aircraft at Banjarmissin on Borneo.
I have ordered 7th Bomber Group (Liberators x 30 active) 42nd BG (41 x Marauder) and 90th Bomber Sqn (16 Mitchells) and 2 Martin Sqns (19) so c 100 level bombers to hit the place tonight.
I am hoping to close the field.
18th Armoureds Task Force A has been sent north to near Batavia as I notice transports off shore following the IJN BB TF (this force now known as Task Group 18/A consists of 3rd Australian Bde/ 27th Australian Bde 2nd Australian Tank Regt and 118th USAAF Base Force)
A PT boat flotilla based at Tjilipat has been ordered to Batavia to try and hit any TF transiting the gap between Sumatra and Java

Ok so what is it about Batavia and bombardment runs completely decimating whoever is living there - 5000 men die again - ludicrous.

RE: Sveint v Andy - The Battle of JAVA Allied Side
Surprised with the 5000 figure but only three supply hits. What is that about? Maybe there is some stacking ruling in effect. Too many infantry units and they start to take a lot more losses in bombardments?

Not sure, I've bombarded Bataan with all the coastal guns there supressesed and had less than 1k casualties with all the allied forces on luzon stationed there.

RE: Sveint v Andy - The Battle of JAVA Allied Side
I have not seen the turn yet but Sveint has caught me slightly on the hop with this move as I was expecting 2 or 3 days of air suppression 1st.
I have one base force and an Inf Bn at his landing point which wont be enough to stop him. I can move about another 400 assault points quickly by moving 1st Dutch Division from Batavia. (if they acrtually have 400 AV after the bombardment run)
I will need to commit 1st and 2nd Commonwealth Divisions to the North as well as soon as I am certain this is the main thrust.
On the bombardments I am terrified and cannot believe that 5 CA's could kill 10% of my strength at Batavia in one day this cannot be right.
If this is not a fluke and is going to be par for the course I will not be able to hold Batavia (or any other coastal hex)
I dont expect to hold the lvl 1 port in fact I am almost counting on not holding it and sucking him in to a fight on a logistical shoe string but if he can quickly take Batavia in total I may not be able to stop him at all or even delay him.
This one bombardment could scupper my whole plan.
5000 casualties !!!! thats over 10% of my men !!! (Allied GHQ is shocked wondering what new wonder weapon the IJN has developed)

OK just re read main thread BB's did damage not CA's and I made em pay for it.
CA's only did 1000 casualties.
CA's only did 1000 casualties.

RE: Sveint v Andy - The Battle of JAVA Allied Side
Java defence.
Hmmmm... Don't commit too much to this as Java is really tricky and vulnerable. Assuming Borneo andthe Celebes are now Japanese territory, all he has to do is take Flores/Soemba/Koepang/Bali and you're Facked. No evacuation is possible without grievous losses in shipping. No more fighter shuttles from OZ for you. Lose your fighters and your bombers won't launch because they"vote in the mess" and decide individually that it's too risky, letting thousands of Japanese onto the island unmolested. Potentially a real strategic mess.
Move your big air support units to both Madioen and Bandoeng as they are also size 4, lie astride the main route down the spine of Java, and are land locked so the pizza delivery bombardment exploit can't be used to crush your troops. *The fact that entrenchment seems to have no discernable effect on bombardment from land/sea/air is suspect and deserves to be looked into.

RE: Sveint v Andy - The Battle of JAVA Allied Side
The only forces I have committed to Java that were not already in theatre i.e. Malaya / DEI/Phillipines are 1 brigade of ANZAC troops and a Marauder BG.
I have 2 sqns of Hurricanes and 2 ANZAC Bdes at sea now and was going to commit them but I will hold off I think until I am clear what I am facing.
I think my main mistake so far was to remove the navy from the theatre
Had I kept a few heavier units off shore I would be in a far stronger position to limit his bombardment and invasion success
Instead I am over reliant on DD's and PT Boats that are a fairly fragile weapon.
I have 1 CV TF at sea based around a US CV off of Sumatra/ Andaman Island.
I will commit her to LR air support off the west coast of Java after she does a flybye of Andaman Island.
If I lose on Java I am only really losing forces I should have lost in Malaya so I am going to try and stand and fight.
It may be a mistake but the commonwealth and Dutch forces will go down fighting.

RE: Sveint v Andy - The Battle of JAVA Allied Side
I am considering using the 2 ANZAC Bdes on ship to reinforce Koepang instead to secure my retreat.
Not sure yet I may just say sod it and commit them to the Java jungle campaign.
I have a US Inf Division at Darwin as my northern Australia Theatre reserve if I could use a brigade of troops from this division to re inforce Koepang instead.

RE: Sveint v Andy - The Battle of JAVA Allied Side
The Java gambit worked in another PBEM I have going but he gave me anoyther month to dig in and in the end I got sucked in and committed far to many forces to the defence as well so it turned into a Pyrric victory if victory it could be called at all.
Gilles if you read this any comments on our games fight for Java ?
(We are in September and still fighting there but I did commit a lot of extra forces to the defence in that game)

RE: Sveint v Andy - The Battle of JAVA Allied Side
100 bombers set to night attach 20 launch that is just terrible festroyed 11 on ground though.
Merak will be tough to hold I have set 5 TF of 5 subs each to lay mines in the gap betweeen Sumatra and Java
6 Brigades of elite infantry have been sent to Batavia to hold the line there.
I have a problem as I suspect he will take merak next time.

RE: Sveint v Andy - The Battle of JAVA Allied Side
OK I made a mistake half of 1st Dutch Division arriveed at Merak just in time to be routed by the IJA's 5 Divisions at Merak.
This is going to make the defence of Batavia tricky.
1st Commonwealth Div and 18th Armoured Divisions TF A are 3 and 2 days from Batavia.
1st Dutch and elements of 2nd Dutch have to hold out until these re inforcements get there.
It is a race can the Dutch hold !!!
Despite orders to the contrary the rail line was captured intact and amazingly the IJA have brought engines and rolling stock on Dutch specificartion so the railway is back in operation...this is truly amazing !!!!
I am confident that behind lvl 6 forts at Batavia 5 full strength Australian and Indian brigades can hold for a while at least if they can get there.
Batavia must hold if he gets that port his buildup in Java becomes a lot easier and may make the island untennable.
I need to wear him out before I give up strategic advantage like Batavia.

RE: Sveint v Andy - The Battle of JAVA Allied Side
My air is not doing much and Bombardments into Batavia are causing me real problems.
Batavia is almost getting to untennable as a base status.
Unfortunately I must hold.
I am getting worried that Sveint may try to land his Phillipine Divisions at Kragen.
I am going to reinforce (temporarily) the Kragen defences as giving up two bases would be tricky to defend against.
Still no real air onslought which surprises and worries me.
Sveint is not wasting pilots on long range strike missions and lets face it with the poor hitting my air is doing he has no need.
This will preserve his forces for later fights.

RE: Sveint v Andy - The Battle of JAVA Allied Side
I am getting very very concerned about Sveints ability to bombard with CA's and the damage they are doing.
I am holding a great many formations out of coastal hexes as its my only choice.

RE: Sveint v Andy - The Battle of JAVA Allied Side
1 week in to the battle of Java.
I am still holding Sveint in that one town but I think all he is doing is gathering supplies for the upcoming battle of Batavia.
1st and 2nd Dutch Divisons await him behind lvl 6 forts there.
I have withdrawn most of the now fully disabled artillary and have sent them south to recover disabled squads.
1st Bde of the 3rd NZ Division and 30th Austrlain Inf Bde are holding with base forces and armoured support at the hex below Batavia.
If I lose the fight for Batavia quickly (which I may do) due to bombardments I must hold the next square otherwise he can split my defence by sending forces to bypass Tjiljap.
2nd and 3 CW Divisions and elements of my Philipine Force hold in the south for any potential invasion.
1st CW Div has moved north to support the midddel secto of java in case of a landing at Kragen or direct at Tjiljap.
Air superiority is lost during this 1st week however Spits are due within 3 weeks.
If I can get 2 Sqns of Spits operational on Java he will start to pay for these raids.
(I am relaly paranoid about India Wobbly v PZB may have given Sveint Ideas so I am being ultra careful with my Indian defences especially as I still hold Burma)
