Illusion of Victory - Alikchi vs Cruft

Post by Alikchi2 »

Continuing me and Cruft's 2-day Scenario 15 game with a new thread and a new patch. :)

The old thread was "Ow, My Fleet - 2 Day AAR". Cruft's thread is titled "Dithering in the DEI - Cruft vs Alikchi". We're running 1.21 right now, but we'll switch to 1.30 as soon as Cruft can download it.

This AAR starts, conviniently enough, on February 1st, 1942. Here's what has happened so far (I'll link screenshots for each theatre later) -

India/Burma: I've basically stripped India bare of defenses and hurled them into Burma - where the fighting is starting to heat up, as my boys pull back to Mandalay. (Rangoon fell with very little resistance - the only resistance being accidental.) Other than that, it seems like the situation here is something I can handle. I'm taking a big risk by exposing India and Ceylon to invasion - there's basically NOTHING there - but it's a risk I'm willing to take, at this point. I don't see Cruft going for India at this point, and I can reinforce them later once I have a solid line in Burma. Still, it's a moment of weakness for me.

China: I have been beaten around very, very badly, due to poor initial deployments and, well, general sloppiness on my part. In any case, Japan has mauled an army at Changsha, encircled an 1100 assault point army at Homan, and stolen Sian from under my nose. I'm pulling back into the interior, so I can concentrate my forces - but the situation is very bad. He also has utterly demolished my I-16s anytime I engage, so I'm keeping them and the SB-2s back until something better can be done.

Malaya: I've been pushed back, base by base, to Singapore. All my aircraft have been evacutated (mostly to the DEI), but it's too late to pull any men out now. They'll fight to the end.

Phillipines: The big battles are starting - I have three forces, divided at Clark, Bataan and Manila. The Clark forces are fighting a slightly larger Japanese army, while Bataan and Manila are untouched. The rest of the Phillipines have been taken, more or less. Most of my aircraft have been evacced, and my getaway was more or less clean. Oh, I sacked MacArthur. :D Anywho, at this point I really don't have any more orders to give - I just wait for Cruft.

DEI: This is where the most action has taken place (see Cruft's thread title). I've committed large numbers of ships and aircraft to reinforcing the DEI - and ground troops soon, as well. Lots of minor engagements have occurred in the Java Strait, and I plan on holding on to Java as long as humanly possible while still pulling out as many units as I can. Batavia and Soerbaja are full of bits and pieces of Allied airpower, and Java is home to a rather large fleet - a battleship and several supporting task forces from the USN, chunks of the Far East Fleet.. Timor is being built up as a bastion to protect Oz and launch future offensives into the DEI - Dutch units are being withdrawn there, along with chunks of MacArthur's air force. A New Zealander infantry division is even in transit. Cruft has taken Kuching, Amboina, and another base on the coast of Borneo - I gather that his big offensive is still on the way.

SOPAC/SWPAC: He's taken most of the Solomons, and has taken all of the Gilberts and Marshalls. My main concern at this point is securing the route between the US and OZ. Canton is being built up as a major base and "pit stop" for convoys. Port Moresby has been slightly reinforced (more en route) and Noumea has a USMC division sitting on it. Two US carriers are sitting in Wyndham - they're essentially pinned there in the face of enemy airpower. (I could break out to the east coast, but I'd be spotted..) BB Pennsylvania was in Darwin, recovering from a torpedo hit in the Banda Sea, before it had a magazine explosion and sunk. You'd think I'd have learned from Pearl Harbor - oops. Rabaul is taken, but Cruft seems to be taking his time here. I don't think I'll have to deal with anything until after the SRA is secured for him.

Central Pacific: Nothing on the screens here. Wake was taken on the first day, but no offensive maneuvers other than that. Oh - I plan to take Wake back eventually. By then I should have Midway established as a staging point.

North Pacific - More going on here than you'd think. I've dropped off two Canadian brigades , a US RCT, strong air units and base forces at Dutch Harbor - I plan to advance from this angle sometime in 43, most likely. Cruft has dabbled a bit here as well - sub minelaying in Dutch Harbor (perhaps others?) and, in just the latest turn, a bombardment of Kiska that might lead to an invasion. This could become surprisingly heated..

That's the situation so far. Hope you follow along [:)]

Quiet turn today. Nearly all aircraft were grounded by weather, and there were no naval combats - just the continuing ground war. Which gives me the chance to post screenshots. [:)] Warning: not for the faint of bandwidth.

I'll go through these theatre by theatre.

Burma/India:

Image

Pretty self explanatory. Reinforcements, including a UK division, are on their way to Akyab and Mandalay. The Chinese are almost to Mandalay, as well. The AVG is in Imphal recuperating.

China:

Image

What a mess. Not much to say here, except that I'm frantically trying to get Chinese units to where they can make a difference. I'm especially afraid for the future of Lanchow, as my main army in the north at Homan has been cut off and beat up. I'm pulling back to stronger positions in the center, and I'm mounting a weak offensive in the south. My worst theatre.

Malaya:

No picture - easy to describe. Everyone's fallen back to Singapore, where the battle continues. Nothing left to do here.

PI:

Image

Again - not much to say here. Battle continues at Clark, where I'm outnumbered 2-1. Then we fall back to Manila and Bataan. Everything that could fly or float has escaped or been blown up.

Java/Borneo:

Image

Busily working away here. Aircraft evacuated from the PI and Malaya - notably Hurricanes and B-17s - have a home in Batavia and Soerabaja. We've already had a few naval battles in the Java Sea, and I expect more in the future. All those subs are on their way to Soerabaja to rest and recombine as transport TFs, to help evacuate base forces - already well underway with standard APs and AKs. Most of the evacuated units are going to northern Australia and Timor. Speaking of..

Northern Australia/Timor:

Image

Before you scream about the US CVs - I'm moving them as soon as a fuel TF (visible 4 hexes away) arrives at Wyndham. Probably to Perth. The Liberators at Darwin aren't flying until I have suitable escorts and enough air support - both of which are going to come from Java. As for Timor - well, I have bombers there too, and soon the base forces to keep them all working. And the linchpin of all this is the New Zealander division on its way. I'll split it to cover the two bases on each end of the island.

Canton/The Gilberts:

Image

The convoy is on its way to Oz, obviously. Other than that, not much to say here, except that a New Zealander Cavalry Brigade is on its way to Canton to help hold it. Only 16 assault points (USMC defense batallion) there right now.

North Pacific:

Image

Dutch Harbor is strong, obviously. I plan to move to Attu/Kiska later, once I feel secure. No enemy action here, except for a couple of IJN DDs that bombarded Kiska last turn - probably a distraction, but I sent 4 of my own over to investigate. They must have left now - I've ordered the the little force back to Dutch Harbor.

I doubt the situation in any of these theatres will remain as stable as it was today for long. China is looking especially bad.

And here are some of our ship losses, by points.

Image

I got hit hard at Pearl. I have managed to sink a few IJN capital ships, though.

Hopefully all these screenshots won't kill everyone's computers. More updates later!

Man, you got a long road ahead. You can do it though.

One question.... how did you loose the Pennsylvania at Darwin? Did she telewarp there or something?

Thanks for the comment. [:)] Pennsylvania got through Pearl scot-free - she and another BB I sent south, hoping I might find a use for them in SOPAC. She was torpedoed by Betties on a bombardment run, then sunk in port by a long range strike from Amboina. Oops - I learned my lesson.

edit: To clarify, she was damaged badly by the torpedo, but stabilized, and a few days later, Betties bombed the port and got a lucky magazine explosion on her.

Back in business [:D]

2/5/42-2/6/42

China: Troops still scuttling about. Nothing surprising today - considering sending the AVG in to disrupt his massive, unescorted bomber formations.. I never should have lost Sian.

Burma: Troops moving into position at Akyab and Mandalay. I think I can hold them both - just a little more time for everyone to come into play.. One of my Chinese corps should arrive in Mandalay by the end of next turn - with them, I think I can hold it. More are on the way.

DEI: Nothing significant to report - an I-boat puts two 21 inch torpedoes into poor little ML Pro Patria. Sinks immediately. Trying to pull back aircraft to Tjilitjap from Batavia - I've seen what those bombardments can do..

Phillipines: Sigh. Nothing new - more bombardments at Clark. No opportunities here.

North Pacific: I feel secure at Dutch Harbor, but I can't project power effectively from there. I'm moving a US RCT and base force to Kiska Island, and I'm covering it with four destroyers. The IJN bombarded Kiska a few days ago with a couple of destroyers, so I'd better be on my guard.. Still, I need that forward base.

CENTPAC: Troops, planes, and base forces moving towards Midway, to prepare it for proposed Wake operation. Subs are also moving towards Japanese bases in CENTPAC - I really need intel on the enemy here. There are something like 50 ships at Kwajalein! SOMETHING is up. Is he going to hit Johnston? None of my AC have the range for a good reconnaisance.. I'm worried.

Southwest Pac/SOPAC: Not much going on in the New Guinea area. Still working on the defense of PM and my convoy routes - Fiji, Suva, &etc. I'm still building up Canton - worried for its safety. I have a New Zealander cavalry brigade on its way, though, and other units for the other islands (mostly split up chunks of a USMC div).

Notes

Like I said, quiet turn. Which is starting to make me nervous.

I'm concerned about the location of the KB. That is, I have no idea where it is. I haven't seen them since they quit pounding Rabaul and headed east, towards the Gilberts, a while back. And there are 50 ships at Kwaj.

What is Cruft up to?

Another ominiously quiet turn.. Not enough to write a situation report here, so I'll just leave you with the AAR itself. A few notes though:

1) I'm sending in a chunk of the 2nd USMC Div to either Baker or Canton, I haven't decided yet.
2) 2 CVs are raiding the small island base south of Tarawa next turn. Small move - I hope to blow up some planes on the ground, put a little scare into him, then run south quick quick to Noumea. Maybe it'll make him stop and think in this area, give me time to strengthen around here.
3) I'll be disembarking parts of an Aussie brigade next turn at PM. As you can see from the report, the Japanese are starting to look the place over, and I really need to get at least enough ground strength to make an invasion difficult. Now I'll have to scrounge up some P-40s - or better yet, a Wildcat squad - to provide cover for the place. I just feel bad putting Wirraways up against Zeroes. I'll probably put a Dutch base force there, too, because I don't have enough AV support and I plenty of DAF base forces that would rather hang out and PM than die needlessly in some pissant base in the DEI.
4) I'm raiding Amboina next turn with two CVs and Liberators from Darwin - going for the airfield and port. I also have the CV TF covered with P-40s from Timor, and the CV fighters are at 80 percent CAP. I'm not taking too many chances with my CVs at this stage in the war - but I still think I can do some damage here. Lots of ships, and I know of the Betty/Zero presence that I would like to eliminate or hurt a bit, at least.
5) I have something like 720 assault points at Mandalay now, and I still have a couple of Chinese units on the way. Akyab will also soon be reinforced with the UK division and a few smaller infantry and artillery units. And just to be safe, I've put a little Indian brigade on Ceylon (the southern base whose name I always forget).

I'll stop there, heh. Anywho, here's the (very quiet) AAR:

Iiiiiinteresting..

2/9/42-2/10/42

Burma/India: Akyab still weak - Mandalay very strong.

China: His continual slaughter of I-16s over Hengchow (I think) has gotten annoying. He'll be rather surprised tomorrow when the AVG shows up to fight his Nates.[:D]

PI: No news.

Malaya: No news.

DEI: My little gambit didn't work too well. Liberators bombed Darwin over the two days, doing not too much damage and losing several of their number to Zeroes. The carrier strike was improperly escorted, and my 60+ SBDs didn't do nearly as much damage to the airfield as I would have liked. Sigh. CV group is pulling back to Wyndham, and the Liberators are standing down. I'll try again later. Other than that, nothing but further movement of forces. I'm rearraging the ground forces and have pulled every single ship and aircraft out of Batavia to other bases in the DEI. (Way too exposed). I've also pulled out the B-17s that I evacuated from the PI earlier in the war, along with Martin units and a few other airgroups - going to bring them to Darwin.

My Kiwi Div is almost to Darwin. Then to Timor.

SOPAC/SWPAC: Not looking good. Remember me worrying about Baker? He took it this turn, with an SNLF. Escorted by, according to my PBYs, a rather large force. I am also informed that Kwaj harbor is a bit more empty than it was before - something is up. My CVs are heading for Noumea - I wish they were around this turn, I could have hit the Baker invasion TF.. ah well. Better to get them out of harm's way at this point in the war, I think - I can strike at the periphery. But his eye seems to have moved to the US-Oz convoy route, and I can't stand up to him face to face. Anyways, the New Zealander cav brigade is almost to Canton, and little bits and pieces of ground units are on their way, using the inadequate transport available. I've also pulled out the LBA units I had sitting around there.

CENTPAC: My big convoys are straggling their way to Midway. A Marine fighter squad unloaded this turn, actually, and base forces, AA units, &c will follow. Once the transports return, they'll pick up the big ground units for the Wake nuisance-attack. Speaking of - I want to know what's going on at Wake, but my aircraft at Midway don't have a long enough range. Suggestions?

North Pacific: Starting landings at Kiska. No sign of the DDs that bombarded it earlier.. I also haven't been spotted. He might not have too many AC on naval search in this area, which is good for me.

So, yeah. My biggest thing now is preservation of my CVs and holding the US-Oz line.. Can I get ground units there in time?

No new turns, but two bits - more for my benefit than yours, but eh!

One - I'm almost positive that Canton Island is his next target. All those ships cruising around, his allusions in the previous thread - I only hope I can get enough people there in time. I -need- that base or traffic between Oz and the US will be severely hampered. If that happens, reestablishi
ng that link will become the top priority.

Two - Assembling Wake invasion force at Midway and Pearl. I have to divert his attention somehow. And, well, all this running and hiding is getting a bit depressing. :P Going to try and bring in Coronados for recon purposes.

A fun turn!

2/11/42-2/12/42

Burma/India: Enemy airstrike on Mandalay - 13 Nates, 22 Oscars and 54 Sonias are met by 11 Hurricane IIs on CAP. The Hurris manage to not get shot down (more or less) and take down a few Sonias, but the base still takes damage. Hopefully he tries again, because I've moved in another Hurri unit along with bits and pieces of the AVG. Speaking of..

China: The AVG performed splendidly over Hengchow, knocking down something like 15 Nates with no losses to themselves. No doubt he's going to counterstrike with some huge bomber force, so I've already pulled out the AVG and replaced it with another I-16 squadron.

Intel informs me that he already has a division in Sian, probably more, so the troops I have converging on the base are in for a hard fight.

Malaya: More bombardments at Sing. Siiigh.

PI: Deliberate attack at Clark. He has roughly 100,000 troops there now, to my 40,000. The base won't hold out longer than 5 days, tops - then we fall back to Manila and Bataan.

DEI: No action today. Tomorrow we should have plenty, though. I have bombardment groups - BIG ones - on their way to hit Singkawang. Most of my bomber force - Martins primarily - will be bombing the airfield and port there, as well. Hopefully Betties don't sink everything, because I don't have any fighters with the legs to cover the bombardment groups. I'm taking a big risk...

I've also removed every aircraft from Batavia save some Catalinas and moved them to Tjilitjap. The Martins can still hit Borneo, and I'm not horribly vulnerable to bombardments.

SOPAC/SWPAC: He's landing at Lae - I wonder if he'll try the overland route to PM.. he also took Kavieng and Sorong (northern NG) this turn. Rather leisurely, which is fine with me - I really don't want to get involved in yet another theatre.

The race to reinforce Canton is still on - my Kiwi Cav brigade started unloading today. But it's not enough. Everything I can scrounge up in the area is on its way.

CENTPAC: An I-boat torpedoes an AK unloading at Midway, but otherwise no action. Still working on getting recon of Wake - Coronados are at Pearl and will transfer to Midway next turn.

Northern Pacific: No action - successfully unloading a Canadian brigade at Kisku. Should be secure there - just need to bring in more base units and minelayers and all that fun stuff. Kisku will make a nice sub base, I think.

Notes:

I'm just waiting for the hammer to drop. I feel like it's either going to hit Canton or (more likely) the DEI - I don't have nearly enough ground troops on Java, poor Dutchmen. I'll save as many as I can.. The turns have been too quiet lately.

(Announcer voice) USS Astoria sinks of Singkawang! Massive air battles rage above Hengchow and Mandalay! One-sided surface fight between AK and I-boat!

Burma/India: An armored tank brigade arrived today - something like 286 assualt points! - that I'm going to place at Chandpur, I think, to be in place to counter any landing attempts in that area. If I have to, I'll send to to Mandalay or Akyab.

Another air raid hit Mandalay today, and this time I had more Hurris and 5 P-40Bs from the AVG. Both made a good accounting of themselves against the Oscar Is, shooting down many and breaking through to the bombers (Sonias). I've moved in the reserves from Imphal - two groups of Buffaloes - hoopefully he'll try it again.

China: Lucky I pulled out AVG from Hengchow because it gets hit with a -massive- strike today. The I-153 squadron loses something like 70% of its strength on day one, and subsegent strikes - one memorable one including more than a hundred strafing Nates - basically knocks out Hengchow airfield.

In other news, I'm pulling out the Homan army - there is, apparently, an escape route. And my boys are converging on Sian.

Malaya: More fighting and bombing at Singapore, yadda yadda yadda.

PI: My little probe at Naga reveals 23000 Japanese. Flee, flee back to Manila! Also, continuing depressing battle at Clark.

DEI: My first Singkawang bombardment force gets mauled - the IJN is not to be wrangled with at night, hah. What appears to be an invasion force - 2 heavy cruisers, 2 light cruisers, 5 DDs and 6 APs - meets my CA Astoria and 3 DDs. Only superficial damage is inflicted on the enemy. In return, DD Maury eats 3 Long Lances and goes down almost immediately, while Astoria loses most of its weaponry early on and is simply pounded under the waves by CA Mogami's 8-inch shells. The other two DDs are fleeing back to Soerabaja, one with system damage in the 30s. A rather humiliating fight.

However, I do have 3 much larger surface forces converging on the area - and it's even luckier that there is an invasion force there. I might be able to intercept it. And one of the forces is a full-blown USN surface task force, headed by the BB Colorado. Next turn should be interesting here. :)

Oh, and a funny aside. I-162 surfaces to attack the AK Palawan in the Java Sea, but the alert captain of the Palawan sent 3 shells into her immediately. I-162's torpedoes missed, too. Sucker!

SOPAC/SWPAC: Nothing to report.

Northpac: Nothing to report.

Notes: I bet that invasion TF was headed for Sumatra. He still hasn't taken any bases there. Also, check out the combat report under the "WTF" heading. Seriously, what's going on there?

Eventful turn..

Burma/India: Air battles continue over Mandalay - still not going my way. The Buffaloes I brought in got themselves slaughtered, but the Hurris still account themselves well against Oscars and Nates.

China: Homan is taken - my army there is retreating to Lanchow, where they will get some seriously needed rest. I'm thinking about calling off my attack on Sian and waiting until I can put together an actually formidable force at Lanchow. Right now, China just needs to hold together - later I can worry about getting Sian and Changsha back.

Malaya: More bombardments at Sing, sigh.

PI: Clark falls! Everyone retreats to Manila. I still have about 250 assault points worth at Bataan, though. I was pretty shocked this turn to find out that my forts at Manila and Bataan had NOT been building. For the whole game, apparently. I might not last long. Embarrasing much?

DEI: My follow up bombardment groups - essentially the entirety of surface forces in the DEI, minus damaged ships - smash up Singkawang airfield, but fail to catch any juicy invasion forces. Too bad. Still, risky - Fuso and Yamashiro are sitting in Singkawang harbor, and I'm lucky I wasn't caught by Betties, too. (They hit a bunch of AKs and a TK at Palembang, which I forgot to strip of oil and resources like some of the others.) I'm going to withhold my surface boys until the final battle for Java starts, or I see a excellent opportunity. I can't compete with those 2 BBs.

Makes me very tempted to bring up my two CVs, though. In fact.. I think I just might do that. I'd just love to take out Fuso and Yamashiro. Where IS the KB, anyways??

Anywho, he also finds a small group of Hurricanes sitting in a base in northern Sumatra that I - another gaffe - had completely forgotten about. Oops. There are about four of them left - I'll jump them south, base by base.

CENTPAC: Narwhal took a depth charge in Kwaj harbor but will hopefully make it back to Pearl. I can't believe it took this long for her to get plunked - she's been sitting there for a while now. At Midway, an AK hits a Type 88 mine - MSWs dispatched from Pearl to take care of the sub-laid field. And the Coronados do their work. According to them, something like 7000 troops at Wake, plus some ships floating around and an 11 Claude CAP. Proposed invasion is starting to look more and more feasible.

CV Hornet is on her way to Pearl, too. She will support the Wake deal.

SWPAC: Chunks of the 2nd USMC Div landing at Canton this turn. Fiji already has a NZ Brigade, and the other islands will get minor garrisons too. But Canton has to be absolutely secure first, along with Noumea. These are the biggest links in the chain. He bombed PM today and hit nothing, because there is essentially nothing to hit - no fighter aircraft there at all at the moment. I have a convoy with 180 aircraft just rounding Noumea, though, headed for PM and Townsville - these two bases, along with Darwin, are going to be -big-. I'm also probably going to save up some PPs and send more ground reinforcements to PM - I only have something like 100 assault points there, and it makes me nervous.

My Kiwi div arrived at Timor today - most of them are already off the boats! 287 assault points - Timor isn't falling to the Japanese on my watch. Depending on how many units I can scrounge up, I'll probably split the unit and send half to the western half of the island.

NORTHPAC: An AK at Kiska smacks a mine - sending a MSW to deal with those, too. We likes the sub minelayings!

I got nothin'. [:'(]

No AAR today - nothing significant really happened. Except: BB Colorado got plastered with bombs from Betties in Soerabaja harbor today. Damn! Zeroes sliced through my not-enough-CAP.

Colorado will survive - I hope - but she has 64 sys damage. I'll hold her there for the next turn, then send her down to Perth or Brisbane the next. Soerbaja is far too exposed - I should have realized that in the first place.

Other than that, nothing to report. Buildup continues at Mandalay, Akyab, Dutch Harbor, Kiska, Canton, Noumea, and Timor.

The Impregnable Fortress of Singapore hath fallen, netting roughly 80000 prisoners for Cruft. The score is now roughly 2:1 in favor of Japan. Manila is under siege, as well. I expect a push on Mandalay at some point onw that the forces from Malaya are free.

BB Colorado, which took several bombs in a Betty raid on Soerabaja harbor, is slinking south to Wyndham escorted by 2 DDs. De Ruyter and other damaged ships are heading south, as well - I can't leave them sitting around in the harbor as targets. Wish I had more ARs around..

Speaking of Java, I've moved the Tjilitjap Defense unit (30 assault points) to Kragen, along with the 1st Dutch Regiment from Batavia. I expect him to land there when the time comes - it seem to be the standard landing zone for Japan in PBEMs..

The US CVs are on the move. Lexington and Enterprise are leaving Wyndham and heading north - I plan to hold them off the southern coast of Java, near Batavia but hopefully out of recon range, to launch strikes at invasion TFs (he'll probably hit Sumatra soon). I secretly hope to knock out Fuso and Yamashiro. :D He is on the move - will probably capture Pontianak in Borneo this turn.

Hornet has arrived at Pearl, and the two other US CVs (can't remember names for some reason o_O) are on their way to Wyndham after refueling at Noumea.

Canton Island is secure as I now have roughly 300 assault points there. Spreading out now to cover Noumea, Palmyra, Fiji &c. I'm still nervous about this region.

In China, my southern armies put on the pressure in Wuchow and Nanning, and the northern armies retreat to Kungchang. I hope to hold it, but the outcome is doubtful - he seems to have concentrated a lot of ground troops up there.

Recon of Wake shows that he's upgraded the Claudes to Zeroes. I need more CVs on the scene and better recon before I can try a grab at this base.

So, to sum up. Burma is stalled as he halts bombing of Mandalay (for now). Singapore has fallen. The Phillipines are falling. In the DEI, Cruft is advancing piecemeal, while we both snipe at each other (him with aircraft, I with surface units). (Dithering? :P) In the north, IJN subs do their best to delay the beginnings of US buildup. In CENTPAC, the US brings forces together at Pearl and Midway in preparation to recapture Wake.

Not much action going on - only real combat in Northpac.

India/Burma: Forts building up at Mandalay, and UK division almost to Akyab. Fleet with R-class BB moving up to Ceylon. I doubt the blow will fall in this theatre for at least a month - Cruft is a relatively conservative player, so he'll probably take Burma up to Imphal (or some other nice, easily defensible, non-malarial base) and start fortifying for 44. India is safe.

DEI: Colorado, De Ruyter and their escorts retiring to Oz. 1st Dutch Regiment halfway to Kragen, where mining operations continue - 421 mines so far. Also, recon detects a fleet coming down near Amboina and the Celebes (CA CA CA CA CA). Might be an invasion TF, or more troops for his build up at Amboina - or something worse. We'll see. In any case, I'm accelerating evacs in this area - going to try and pull a DAF base force out of Kendari in the next couple of turns. I've also done a massive redeployment of subs - they've all rested at Soerabaja and will be spreading out over the next few turns.

SWPAC/Oz: Large convoy with 180 AC onboard nears Townsville. Most will be deployed to PM once I get enough aviation support. (Need to bring in base forces from the US.) No combat action. Again, I wonder if he'll try the overland route to PM..

PI: Blah. Fighting in Manila, Bataan isolated. Not much longer now.

CENTPAC: Air units unloaded at Midway - I have Wildcats, Coronados, PBYs and B-17s (I think; this is from memory). I miscalculated on the B-17s - if only they had a couple more hexes of range, I could hit Wake.. ah well. I'll have to wipe out the airfields with CV strikes.

Northpac: The DDs I have protecting the Kiska landing sink I-122. Building continues at Kiska and Dutch Harbor.

Notes:So, not too much going on. I feel like the hammer has to come down somewhere soon. But where? I'm betting the DEI. Malaya is gone, the PI is going, and it's time for Cruft to tie up his loose ends in the SRA.

On that note, Lexington and Enterprise continue north towards Java with their semi-depleted airgroups, to lay in wait for Cruft's next move..

Interesting turn. The IJN hammer is about to hit the DEI once again. The Allies are making a suicide run for Baker Island with little or no support..

2/25/42-2/26/42

India/Burma: No action this turn - land units are just about in position in Burma. I've ordered the AVG - 44 planes now - and all the Hurricanes at Mandalay to sweep Pagan airfield next turn. Hopefully we'll be able to swat down some Oscars - the Hurris have done adequately enough against them before, and the AVG demolishes them. Keeping Cruft on his toes here.

China: The deliberate attacks yesterday in Nanning and Wuchow were failures - neither brought down a fort level and I took strong casualties, even with a 3 to 1 advantage in numbers. Sigh. I'll return to bombardments - at the very least I'm keeping his forces pinned down.. then again, that applies to me as well.

DEI/Northern Aus: Impending doom, doom, doom. But I'll start off with today's attacks. A Betty raid catches minelayers reloading at Soerabaja harbor and blows through my CAP - I've upped it to 90 and evacced my more damaged capital ships. All they can do is soak up bombs. I wish I had kept my P-40s here, now - ah, well. Java is essentially untenable once he has Betties in range. The Zero makes all this possible.

Anyways. A big task force is one hex from Palembang as the turn ends. I think at this point the target is obvious - then again, he might swing south and hit Batavia - Cruft is wiley. I've belatedly sortied the undamaged remnants of the ABDA fleet from Tjilitjap, and Lexington and Enterprise are almost to Java - if only I'd sent them sooner! I might be able to inflict damage with the surface fleet, though.

On the other end of the DEI, there's lots of activity around Amboina - many task forces formed. And then there's that force just now passing through the slot to Sulawesi. I'm pulling back my shipping from the area..

Saratoga and Yorktown are passing between New Guinea and Oz, on their way to Wyndham. Soon I will have 4 CVs in the DEI to snipe with.

PI: Bombardment attacks at Manila. I'm already outnumbered.

SWPAC: I think I just made a horrible mistake.

I see no airbase built at Baker. Tarawa is still a very small airfield. The 2nd Marine Division, transiting to SOPAC, is going to suddenly turn about at hit Baker.

I just know that Betties will hit it, but I'm trusting on luck and surprise here.

NORTHPAC: No action, but mines have been detected at Kiska. Sending MSWs up from Midway to deal with it.

CENTPAC: Building up Midway, trying to bring in the transport capacity for the recapture of Wake, which has been designated Operation Brute.

Great turn for the Allies [:D]

2/27/42-2/28/42

Burma/India: The sweep of Pagan goes off without a hitch - the AVG destroys roughly 20 Oscars in the air, and at least 3 Tojos. Next turn, I bring in the bombers (mostly Blenheims from Imphal).

China: Units that wandered into Sian on the way to Kungchang get kicked out.

PI: Deliberate attack at Manila removed the last fort level. It might fall next turn..

DEI/Northern Aus: Much action. :)

The surface fleet doesn't hit his northern invasion force, which indeed did turn out to hit Palembang - probably for the best, since BBs Fuso and Yamashiro were hanging out protecting it. However, CVs Lexington and Enterprise managed to get in SBD range and hit the invasion task force! Damage is spread out, but several APs look lik they'll sink, a DD is almost certainly sunk, and a CL was heavily damaged. They did manage to unload their ground troops, however - an SNLF and a few NLFs - Palembang will not hold long. A good strike, but I'm within Betty range, so time to run south.

Which leads to the next bit here.. The other force landed at Kendari. Looks like they'll overwhelm them quickly, too.. but Saratoga and Yorktown are heading north past Timor and will get in striking range soon. Lex and Enterprise are heading south to meet them. If I can combine the four CVs, I might be able to do serious damage here..

SOPAC/SWPAC: The Baker landing was, surprisingly, uncontested. No air attacks, nothing. I feel like I've gotten away with something dirty. A few more days to unload (taking forever, size one port) and I'll have a basically impregnable position. What IJN unit can dislodge a Marine div?

Also, Cruft takes Gili Gili. PM is increasingly isolated. However - the 180-aircraft convoy landed in Townsville today. It has B-17s, B-26s, P-40s, and some B-18s that will be upgraded on-site. They'll spread out through PM and northern Oz. Meanwhile, I am basically out of aviation support in the theatre - a serious problem considering all the heavy bombers on the way. I'm going to try and bring in units from west coast ASAP. I've been a bit sloppy about this..

A not-so-good day for the Allies. Gah.

3/1/42-3/2/42

Burma/India: Another successful day over Pagan with half a dozen Oscars shot down by the AVG with minimal losses. :) The Blenheims do minimal damage, however, so I've called off their attacks.

China: More divisions stupidly decide to pass through Sian on their way north and get rebuffed. I might just send them back to the central front if I have to.. Lanchow is already within striking distance of the IJA. I continue to bombard in the south - the central front is still quiet.

PI: Bombardments at Manila.. we are out of supplies and only have 2 forts. It will fall quickly..

DEI:

Yorktown and Saratoga got in range of the Kendari landing force - the SBDs were able to carry 1000 lbers. Results: One CL likely to sink, another CL and 2 DD heavily damaged. Sadly did not get any hits on the transports. =\ The inevitable Betty counterstrike came in, and although I shot down at least a dozen of them, Lex and Yorktown took an 18 inch torpedo each. Neither are in danger of sinking - they are withdrawing to Wyndham, though.

Saratoga and Enterprise will hit Kendari from the opposite direction next turn - hopefully in range of TBDs, and the Betty force has been hurt badly. I'll sink the cripples and head south if all goes well.

Also this turn, my Martins actually score some hits on IJN shipping, Kendari falls almost immediately, and Palembang still has not been attacked by the Japanese landing force. Maybe his units are understrength? I really have nothing to lose, so I've ordered a Dutch shock attack.

SOPAC/SWPAC: Ow. Ow ow ow.

The Kido Butai reveals itself by utterly obliterating the 2nd USMC Div's transports. A large portion of the division and its supplies go down with it. I appear to have exchanged half a top-notch division for a worthless island and some admittedly priceless naval intelligence - damn damn damn!

I say half a division because although the chunk left at Baker will almost surely die (only 76 assault points worth of Marines landed), I still have about half of the division in reserve at Canton. At least I'll be able to rebuild it given time. Still - this is not something I will repeat. No more spur of the moment attacks from this commander.

Notes: All other theaters were relatively silent. Still preparing for Operation Blunt (invasion of Wake) and am attempting to bring in base forces to SOPAC. I have nearly 200 useless aircraft that could be in PM if I had the aviation support.

RE: 3/1/42-3/2/42

Post by Alikchi2 »

I am back from Christmas break, but my computers are down - it'll be a couple weeks before I get the parts in to fix either of them. In the meantime, I'm typing this from my laptop (which is just too damn crap to run WitP).

I'll probably update it with at least some strategy bits tonight. I have to compete with Cruft! Everyone loves the Japanese AARs. :(

Mid-March Update

Post by Alikchi2 »

Alright, play resumes, finally! I don't have the AAR, so here's a theatre summary for the middle of March, 1942.

India/Burma: This theater is actually looking pretty well right now. For a quick recap, I lost Repulse but Prince of Wales is recovering in Trincomalee - at about 20 sys right now. No other major Brit losses. Ground forces, including the Chinese, have turned Mandalay into a fortress. The AVG and Hurricanes have beaten off IJA bombing raids so far and have performed a couple successful sweeps. I'm sending in the AVG to sweep Rangoon this turn - they're just barely in range. Hopefully I can knock down more Oscars.

Malaya: Singapore fell in mid-February.

The Phillipines: Are about to fall. Manila, Clark and the bulk of my forces have gone into the bag - Bataan is held by a few Marines and some very scared Filipinos. Not much longer now.

DEI: I've been a busy little bee here - the US CVs have been lurking about, sniping at invasion convoys and then pulling out when possible. They're recovering at Darwin now and replenishing their airgroups. At the same time, he's advanced, with his latest conquests being Kendari and Palembang. Java is exposed to Betty attack and is essentially indefensible at this point - I've pulled out most of my combat ships and aircraft, pinning the ground units where they are. It's almost a giant bluff, really. Southern Borneo is also now under threat - with Java exposed, I've moved the ABDA flotilla to Balikpapan. Timor is being built into a fortress - as many Dutch units as possible have been evacuated here, especially base forces. At the moment I'm occupied with pulling units out of Borneo while I can and trying to arrange my aircraft so that my lack of aviation support doesn't harm my operations too much.

SOPAC/SWPAC: Kind of a mess. I don't have the assets I need here - again, especially aviation support for the aircraft. Port Moresby has been reinforced but it doesn't have much covering it against a concerted Japanese attack - and essentially zero air cover. I still need to work out logistical support for this theater. On the US-Oz route, the only big actions have been his invasion of Baker, which he abandoned, followed by my counter-invasion with about half of the 2nd USMC Div. The Kido Butai crushed them in their transports. About 70 assault points worth of Marines are on the island, but Cruft hasn't attempted to retake it - I suppose he'll starve them out. Canton is the anchor of the line (as it were) and I almost hope he tries to take a jab at it, but he won't. In the meantime, I have to recover here and keep the convoys coming.

CENTPAC: No action since the beginning of the war, other than sub warfare. I plan to retake Wake at some point - Operation Blunt - and am putting assets in place to eventually do this. After the Baker Island fiasco, though, I'm in no hurry to stick my head in a noose. We'll wait until I have adequate CV support. Wake has no real strategic value other than the possibility of destroying Japanese assets pinned on the island and drawing out the IJN for combat - the second one being what I really want. Give that a few months, when the SRA is gone and I've managed to create a stable line in SOPAC.

NORTHPAC: Kiska upgraded to 2/2 this turn and is still growing. I also cleared mines a pesky I-boat left behind. I'll end up with a couple divisions here, no doubt - so I can start island hopping south in 43-44. With Hellcats and Corsairs, who's to say I couldn't end up with a nice B-29 base on Hokkaido by 45?

That's the wrapup. All in all, things are quiet. Where will the next Japanese move land? In the meantime, I put my assets in place.. Next turn, I'll throw in some pictures that help describe the situation.
