Moses vs Tophat
Scenario 15. House rules are 1.)No night bombing except naval attack by night designated aircraft. 2.) Forces may not be shifted from russia to China without paying PP's. 3) Jap player(Moses) gets one port attack and will wait 2 days before doing anything in China except for Hong Kong. Other than the at start invasions I will not move any TF further then 4 hexes from one of my bases. 4.) Allied player can move existing task forces and land units in China and Burma on turn one. Nothing else can be touched.

Nevada, Arizona, and 2 PT's sink. There was no further action on 8 or 9 Dec and the american carriers are nowhere in sight. I decided not to attack Wake right away but the BB Mutsu did pay a successful visit on 8 Dec.
Malaya: Standard landings at Khota Bharu and Songaria. My air attack on Singapore was a bust as 99 Nells caused only 20 casualties and 11 runway hits. Tophats airforce attacked my fleet in Khota Bharu heavily on 8 Dec but without effect. They suffered badly from the nates and oscars that I had flying CAP. On 9 Dec Tophat seems to have stood done his forces in the area. My first ground attack against Khota Bharu was at 3-1 odds and I expect it to fall soon.

Dec 7-9
PI:
Battan Island, Vigan, and Apari have been secured. I held off on the Lagaspi invasion for now. Also my paratroops took San Jose on 7 Dec. My attack on Clark was succesful with 101 runway and 14 airbase hits. Tophats airforce has been inactive except for a few ineffective B17 strikes and a catalina that hit an AP.
Tophats ground forces seem to be in an aggressive mood as forces appear to be moving north from Clark. Also he launched a counter-invasion of San Jose which I never expected. It was raining so I don't know what he's got there or how it got there. I suspect I'll find out soon.
Other Area's:
Guam was taken on 8 Dec, Tarawa and the Admiralty Islands on 9 Dec. There was no allied interferance. Allied forces bombed transports off Kuching and a Cruser off Ambonia without effect. Both forces were protected by Claudes.
ASW:
The very first action on 7 Dec was a dutch sub being sunk by 5 depth charges. The next day another sub was sunk at Vigan. A third duch sub was at least damaged at Khota Bharu on Dec 9. The moral of the story is to keep subs out of invasion hexes. Two transports were hit at Vigan however.
On the JP side I hit two transports south of manila and have suffered no sub losses.

RE: Moses vs Tophat
Hmmmn,
Alot of Allied forces are on the move so I can't say much at the moment as to dispositions. I just love saying that, wonder how many people actually are buying that one?
Pearl Harbor:
What can I say here really,no magazine explosions that I recall for what its worth for those keeping track of such events. Loosing 2 BB's sunk seems as it should be actually,so no complaints here. I'm abit more irked that so many of my lighter naval units got smacked around, but such is life. We are cleaningup and busy fixing planes, sending planes on their way and recieving more planes.
PI:
Well my boys are marching, digging and generally preparing to make the japs stay in this garden spot of the pacific a memorable one. I'd tell you what i'm doing at this time but that fellow moses seems to be reading my mail so you'll just have to wait for next turns commentary.
Now the Navy has reported they dropped an ashcan on the top of a jap sub that was firing torpedos at civilian shipping.
Reports from our brave sub drivers, who are firing torpedos at <militarized>civilian shipping report 1 transport sunk and another heavily damaged. Hopefully the 48th Division had a nasty offshore accident!
HongKong:
Whew! got the DD's to sortie! Waiting for the Jap land assault to begin soon.
China:
Redeploying fast and we'll see how the land combat goes with 1.3 now.
DEI:
Its a secret for now,but rumor has it that much Rum,Gin and other alchoholic drinks are being imbibed.
U.S:
Produce, produce, produce! What was done again to the 2nd marines OOB-wise?? They are looking fine to me.
Malaya:
Some aircraft have redeployed, others should be launching devestating airstrikes as this is being written. The POW and company have slipped out of Singapore, they watched a massive port attack go in <99 Nells>as they departed whew!
Burma:
Its a secret!
NG:
Also secret!
U.S Navy:
Tell you later! but atleast this time around I have 3 carrier groups to use! <Last game i lost both Big E and Lex along with their escorts!>
Australia:
Doin fine and brewing BEER!

Malaya: Khota Bharu falls to a 7-1 attack. Tophat moved all his Vildabeasts and swordfish to Georgtown and attacks my fleet from there. My Oscars and Nates cut up the attackers but a dozen or so planes launch torpedoes agains my BB's. All miss.
Borneo: A landing is made at Kuching. Martins attack my ships but get no hits. I needed a little more firepower as thier shore guns roughed up a few of my ships.

I found at least one carrier. I always get these CL's sunk. Last game they were sunk at Wake on turn 3. Instead I sent them to Tarrawa and they survive for one extra day. At least I got the troops ashore.
Other actions: Both the Admiralty islands and Makin island were taken unopposed. Menado and Ambonia were shelled. At Ambonia the allied AF finally hit something as a martin put a 250 bond bomb into the CA haguro. At Aparri I had a transport torpedoed and another hit by a catalina.

RE: Moses vs Tophat
Moses, seems as if you took VERY heavy Kate casualties when hitting Pearl. Could this be the fog of war???? I'd expect 20-30 to be downed, but 50+ [X(]
Thats going to hurt in the long run....

RE: Moses vs Tophat
No thats fog of war. These numbers are always high. Always reduce these by at least half. Actual kate losses were at the low end of your estimate. Still I think aircraft losses were greater then with previous patches.
RE: Moses vs Tophat

PI:
B-17 strike at San Jose ground troops supposedly inflicted 70+ casualties,if i knockedout 30 and lowered morale i'll be happy. Also bombarded the japs here with my British destroyer div out of HongKong on their way to safer waters. The gamble didn't quite workout as a horde of Nells+Betty's sank 2 of the DD's. My troops on the islamd are preparing to clear it over the next few days, unlessthe japs tokyo express some troops in.
The rest of the PI i'm moving people to better positions and digging like a gofer. Things will start popping in a week or less.
The PT boat night attack was a total disaster with all boats sunk for no losses to the japs. Well we shall see what tomorrow brings.
My catalina pilots have put torps into 2 jap transports so far, good now do it somemore boys. The sub drivers are taking risks, but risk is their business and they have had abit of success so far,i'm looking for more.
Borneo:
Landing at kuching while not a surprise in itself came earlier than i thought it might. My minefield naturally was discovered and didn't give the greeting i'd intended. He's dumped the 35th Brigade in here so atleast i know where it is.
Malaya:
Well the 18th Div attacked and forced my garrison out of K.Bharu....on to the next fallback position. Air operations have been less than successful so we are redeploying with a longer view in mind.
Ambonia:
We were shelled with virtually no damage, while our planes struck the ships with virtually no damage. I don't see a landingforce following the bombardment TF but we shall see.
Tarrawa:
Lex TF<while getting out of Dodge>found itself in a position to make an opportunity strike,we took the opportunity.
In our last game I struck at moses Wake Island force and managed to savage it,then loose both LEX TF and The Big E's TF as well to KB on day 3. Its so much better to have 3 CV TF's to try and distract/disrupt jap expansion.
Plans:
see how things develop while digging in everywhere. I have search aircraft going into position at every base on the Jap periphery I can get to,getting these eyes positioned are a major priority. It's early yet and i haven't even gotten my convoy system setup to where I want it yet.
Rangoon.........2 useable brigades here, leave them to dig deep and hope for delay or move'em and use em?

RE: Moses vs Tophat
Those mines at Kuching did give me a shock when I saw my ships clearing them. I thought for sure I would hit a few but I got lucky. I've found that it takes a lot of mines to do much of anything in the game. I guess that makes sence with the 60 mile hexes. One shipload of mines is normally not very effective
Hong Kong Falls!!
Dec 11 1941:
Ground combat at Hong Kong
Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 33296 troops, 330 guns, 17 vehicles
Defending force 12794 troops, 97 guns, 4 vehicles
Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 5
Japanese assault odds: 7 to 1 (fort level 5)
Japanese forces CAPTURE Hong Kong base !!!
Japanese ground losses:
124 casualties reported
Guns lost 8
Vehicles lost 1
Allied ground losses:
16917 casualties reported
Guns lost 97
Vehicles lost 1
I have found the secret to taking it quickly. I sent one division, the 3 arty units, 2 Engr units and a single HQ. 3 turns of bombardment. There were a couple small air attacks but nothing of significance. 1st deliberate attack and Hong Kong is mine.
Also this turn Kuching falls in an 18-1 attack and a landing is made in Ambonia.
The allied air force is active everywhere except around Singapore and they are starting to score hits. A B-17 put 2 bombs in an AP at Apari a Hudson put two bombs in one of my CL's and a seaplane put a ding in one of my transports.
I let the CV Ryugo get a little to close to Kendari where Tophat has shifted a few airgroups. Three bombing runs were made at my carrier and while all missed they made their point.
Sub/ASW was quiet with a few misses by each side.
Tophats carrier has disappeared from around Tarawa.

DD Yugumo
DD Wakaba
DD Hatsushima
DD Nenohi
DD Hatsuharu
DD Mikazuki

SS KXV
This will keep TOPHAT happy on a quiet day. His troops in Ambonia also held off a 2-1 attack which reduced their fortification to 1. I suspect however this base will fall on the 13th.

RE: CVE TAIYO hit!
13-14 Dec 1941
Two slow days as forces move into position.
Bombardment of Aloa Star begins against the two allied brigades there. In the PI my troops SLOWLY move toward clark. Ground movement seems much slower in 1.3 or is it my imagination? At San Jose a slow struggle continues between my airborne troops and the Philipine troops TOPHAT sent there. Now my ships are bombarding the island while he hits my troops with B-17's. The biggest disappointment for me is the failure of my troops to take Ambonia. My last attack was 0 to 1 and while he suffered more casualties I now have to bombard for several days to recover disruption.
A forth allied sub went down and I actually got a reported hit on a sub with an Ann dive bomber!! Tophat continues to bomb with his level bombers and he seems to get a hit or two per day. These havn't done much damage but they are a nusance.

RE: CVE TAIYO hit!
We had all complained about how easy combat was so perhaps some good tweaks have come out of the brew! Gotta love those dutchmen on ambonia!
Glad i'm atleast a nusance so far, worrynot better equitment is on the way!

RE: CVE TAIYO hit!
15-16 Dec 1941
China: Changsa falls to the first deliberate attack. The allie did not try to hold it as only 6 corps were present.
Malaya: Tavoy is captured. The allies pulled out a day before. Japan is bombarding in Aloa Star as forces collect for the killer blow. Still only two allied BDE in Aloa Star so it does not seem that he intends to hold there. Allied AF is resting I think.
PI: The north coast and Turguegura are finally cleared and a landing is made unopposed at Lagaspi. More troops have landed at San Jose and I expect to crush the allied force there shortly.
DEI: I have zero's and bombers at Kuching which are working on the dutch air force. Added forces have landed at Ambonia and this battle should also end soon. The allied AF is still very active and hits something every day. I think they are getting tired as some units turned back with only one damaged plane.
ASW: I got another reported air hit on a sub. This time with a sally.
