All these APs...

Post by fbastos »

... several of them were large liners and passenger ships, in the 30,000 ton range (or more)...

... costing hundreds of millions of dollars, with a crew of a few couple hundred (or more)...

... all treated very carefully by their countries during the war; not many were lost (except for Japan)...

Yet we just bunch them together with third-rate AKs and give them grunt work.

I just took one of them Large AP at random... Moreton Bay, in the picture below. You can see that this is a big ship.

Something's wrong here; at least, their victory values should be much much greater.

F.

PS: Yeah, I know, tonnage of these civillian ships is completely different than of military ships (the Queen Mary once got a couple thousand tons more just by putting a roof on some area), but hey, these are still big ships.

Umm a passenger liner, at least at that time didn't cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Do you know how much the USS Salt Lake City (CA-25) Cost without guns? 26 million bucks. That's right, a lot less than a modern F-16. $26,000,000. Of course, that was in 1920's money, but still.

Ain't no ship military or civilian in WWII that cost anything near "hundreds of millions of dollars." VPs are relative to worth in the war effort and difficulty to replace, not raw translation into cost to build.

I'm talking today's money... hard to keep perspective if you take WW2 money, with a Sherman costing like $50,000 or so (or perhaps less, I wouldn't be surprised).

I think a medium-sized liner goes for say $100 million today, and a large one for $300 million or so.

Would be cool to have some of the larger liners unique from the masses. Sounds like an editor project. Ships can carry too much to me now though, so not having them could be seen as a compromise. Like what small AK can carry 48 B-17s or 72 P-40s?
