Funnel is to slim to be a Yorktown class. And as the 20mm mean that its post ’41 then it can’t be the york in the background being that the wasp and york were in two different oceans before the Yorktown sank. So that being said. Wasp, then Sara (see her big old fat funnel and closed hanger?) then the Big-E in the background. Must be prior to the battle of the east solomons.

Desperate sailors attempt to get some air conditioning by having the propellor back blast directed at them?[:)] Since the cockpit window is open I bet they are listening to the Army-Navy game on that F4Fs radio?[;)]

You sure that pic isn't from 1943ish?

The carrier farthest away, looks a lot like an Essex class. And the marking on the Wildcat don't have the "bulls-eye" in the center of the circle, which would put it at least late '42.

I'd say the CV in the Middle was probably Saratoga. If this pic is from at least late '42 (my assumption from above), the Lex is already down, leaving only Sara.

I don't think the "8" tho has any bearing on the CV it's assigned to tho (so I don't think it's Hornet). I think the 8 is the element number within the Sqdn.

I actually think the ship in the foreground, might be a CVE/CVL, because I don't think they would normally put 3 CVs in a TF together.

The CV farthest away has a foretop to big for an essex. And I don’t believe that the Hornet and Wasp were stationed in the south pacific together prior to the sara getting torpedoed, so I’m guessing it’s the Big-E. Also the closest carrier – Wasp - still has 1.1’s and Mk 33 fire control so it has to be mid-42’s.

It's CV Wasp flight deck, with Saratoga and Enterprise (farthest) during opening of Guadalcanal invasion.

If you squint in Brady's photo, you will see Admiral Noyes on the bridge. Note the fire control director in both photos.

Agree, Wasp in the foreground, then Sara and then Big "E". There were no Essex class CVs in commission before the Wasp was sunk.
