Keroro Gunsou goes to War (Copper vs ADavidB)
I've started a long campaign as the Allies against Copper. We're playing "out of the box" for the most part, with most options turned "on" and no particular house rules. We agreed upon a non-historic start. I treated my first turn as being 12:01 AM on December 7, 1941, with everyone on alert, but not at war, except for the Chinese. So I was able to spread some of my forces better, but I deliberately didn't remove ships from ports.
Copper started out with what appears to be an "improved" historic deployment, but nothing too radical yet. For example, he decided to attack the port in Singapore instead of the airfields:
Day Air attack on Singapore, at 23,50
Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 22
G3M Nell x 88
Allied aircraft
Buffalo I x 7
Japanese aircraft losses
G3M Nell: 19 destroyed, 58 damaged
Allied aircraft losses
Buffalo I: 6 destroyed
Allied Ships
BB Prince of Wales, Bomb hits 2, Torpedo hits 3, on fire
BC Repulse, Bomb hits 3, Torpedo hits 2, on fire
Not bad from my perspective, even if those Japanese air losses are probably exaggerated. After all, if I sent the Repulse and POW out on their historic mission they would probably get creamed anyway. But the key thing is that I've got my local air strength in good shape and ready for the next attack.
Copper did the usual air attack on Clark Field, with the expected results:
Day Air attack on Clark Field, at 43, 51
Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 33
G3M Nell x 36
G4M1 Betty x 53
Allied aircraft
P-40B Tomahawk x 2
P-40E Warhawk x 2
Japanese aircraft losses
G3M Nell: 4 damaged
G4M1 Betty: 1 damaged
Allied aircraft losses
P-40B Tomahawk: 13 destroyed, 12 damaged
P-40E Warhawk: 22 destroyed, 7 damaged
Allied ground losses:
94 casualties reported
Guns lost 1
Airbase hits 31
Airbase supply hits 7
Runway hits 137
Again, that's okay - it just means that other areas got away without damage.
Copper's Pearl Harbor attack was fairly historic too:
Day Air attack on Pearl Harbor, at 112, 68
Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 76
D3A Val x 126
B5N Kate x 143
Allied aircraft
P-36A Mohawk x 3
P-40B Tomahawk x 17
Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 17 destroyed, 5 damaged
D3A Val: 14 destroyed, 44 damaged
B5N Kate: 15 destroyed, 22 damaged
Allied aircraft losses
P-36A Mohawk: 32 destroyed, 20 damaged
P-40B Tomahawk: 68 destroyed, 44 damaged
PBY Catalina: 29 destroyed, 30 damaged
B-18A Bolo: 11 destroyed, 20 damaged
A-20B Boston: 11 destroyed, 6 damaged
SBD Dauntless: 13 destroyed, 7 damaged
P-26A: 1 destroyed, 1 damaged
B-17E Fortress: 3 destroyed, 2 damaged
Allied Ships
BB Nevada, Bomb hits 10, on fire
BB Maryland, Bomb hits 12, on fire
BB California, Bomb hits 7, on fire, heavy damage
BB Pennsylvania, Bomb hits 12, on fire, heavy damage
MSW Vireo, Bomb hits 1, on fire

BB Tennessee, Bomb hits 6, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
CL Detroit, Bomb hits 3, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
BB West Virginia, Bomb hits 5, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
BB Oklahoma, Bomb hits 5, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
AV Curtiss, Bomb hits 1, on fire
CL Helena, Bomb hits 1
Allied ground losses:
214 casualties reported
Guns lost 1
Vehicles lost 1
Airbase hits 56
Airbase supply hits 6
Runway hits 164
I'm not going to be too concerned about those old 20 knot BBs. Now, it looks as if Copper plans to stick around for another turn - it will be interesting to see if my counter strategy has any effect.
The battle for Wake Island turned out to be a bit odd. First off Copper's bombardment force got slapped pretty hard:
Naval bombardment of Wake Island, at 82,63 - Coastal Guns Fire Back!
79 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.
Japanese Ships
DD Yuzuki, Shell hits 10, on fire
DD Kikuzuki, Shell hits 5, on fire
DD Uzuki, Shell hits 6, on fire
DD Oboro, Shell hits 5
CA Kako, Shell hits 8
CA Furutaka, Shell hits 3
CA Kinugasa, Shell hits 1
CA Aoba
Allied ground losses:
245 casualties reported
Guns lost 10
I'll venture a guess that those DDs won't be doing any fast transport missions for a while. Then Copper's troops landed:
Coastal Guns at Wake Island, 82,63, firing at TF 16
TF 16 troops unloading over beach at Wake Island, 82, 63
106 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.
Japanese Ships
AK Kongo Maru, Shell hits 6, on fire
DD Yayoi, Shell hits 5
Japanese ground losses:
184 casualties reported
Guns lost 2
Allied ground losses:
1 casualties reported
Guns lost 1
My troops tried a bombardment, but that first naval bombardment must have done its job:
Ground combat at Wake Island
Allied Bombardment attack
Attacking force 1114 troops, 24 guns, 0 vehicles
Defending force 1519 troops, 14 guns, 0 vehicles
Japanese ground losses:
17 casualties reported
Guns lost 1
Finally Copper's troops got their chance and didn't miss:
Ground combat at Wake Island
Japanese Shock attack
Attacking force 1497 troops, 12 guns, 0 vehicles
Defending force 1554 troops, 24 guns, 2 vehicles
Japanese assault odds: 8 to 1 (fort level 1)
Japanese forces CAPTURE Wake Island base!!!
Allied aircraft
no flights
Allied aircraft losses
F4F-3 Wildcat: 17 destroyed
Japanese ground losses:
174 casualties reported
Guns lost 2
Allied ground losses:
1569 casualties reported
Guns lost 29
I've never quite figured out the controlling factors for the capture of Wake.
The rest of his attacks were fairly normal, except that he landed at Naga in addition to the usual landing at Legaspi. That should isolate my troops at Legaspi (if z.o.c. is actually working) and mean that I'll have less time to dig in at Manila.

RE: Keroro Gunsou goes to War (Copper vs ADavidB)
Well, turn 2 came and I got a couple of pleasant surprises, First off Copper decided not to have the KB stick around Hawaii, so I don't have to test my "Gundam" defense after all. <g> Otherwise, things went pretty much as expected, with a few exceptions.
Copper demonstrated that not only the Allies can put together "super" ASW TFs:
ASW attack near Vigan at 44, 49
Japanese Ships
PC Ch 3
PC Ch 2
PC Ch 1
PC Shonan Maru #2
PC Shonan Maru #1
PC Kyo Maru #13
PC Kyo Maru #12
PC Kyo Maru #11
PC Kyo Maru #2
MSW W.18
MSW W.17
MSW W.10
MSW W.9
MSW W.8
MSW W.7
Allied Ships
SS S-36
But even super TFs sometimes have no luck. (They got two kicks at the old rust bucket and missed both.)
And less "super" groups can do better some times:
ASW attack at 22, 51
Japanese Ships
SS I-156, hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
Allied Ships
MSW Maryborough
MSW Goulburn
MSW Burnie
MSW Bendigo
MSW Toowoomba
MSW Ballarat
I-156 sunk right afterwards.
And then there was my second "pleasant surprise", as one of my AC TFs got some target practice:
Day Air attack on TF, near Wake Island at 82, 63
Allied aircraft
F2A Buffalo x 9
SBD Dauntless x 30
SOC-3 Seagull x 4
Allied aircraft losses
SBD Dauntless: 5 damaged
SOC-3 Seagull: 1 damaged
Japanese Ships
CL Tatsuta, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
CL Tenryu, Bomb hits 1
CL Yubari, Bomb hits 1, on fire
DD Mutsuki
DD Oite, Bomb hits 1, on fire
Copper captured several bases, as expected and flattened poor old Clarke Field again. As well he hit the port at Singapore again, with much less success this time.
Day Air attack on Singapore, at 23, 50
Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 22
G3M Nell x 31
Allied aircraft
Buffalo I x 22
Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 2 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
Buffalo I: 7 destroyed, 1 damaged
Allied Ships
AP Kanimba, Bomb hits 1, on fire
Allied ground losses:
13 casualties reported
Guns lost 1
Port hits 1
So, all-in-all, it wasn't such a bad second day for me. But Copper is already on the march in China, so it looks like I'll have my hands full pretty quickly over there.

RE: Keroro Gunsou goes to War (Copper vs ADavidB)
Turn 3 brought two more surprises. First off, one of the stranger things I've seen in this game as a whole - it turns out that the Penguin is alive and well!!! Yes, the fact that Copper sent his bombardment TF to whack Wake instead of Guam meant that the Penguin was able to escape, unbeknownst to me. While idly scanning across the map I just happened to notice something "green" in the middle of the Pacific, and there was the Penguin, slowly chugging down to Rabaul under computer control. That path was going to take it right next to Truk, and since I don't think that this Penguin has nine lives, I've sent it off on its merry way, hopefully in-between any potential LBA from Copper.
The next big surprise was the total disappearance of Japanese troops from Kota Bharu! They were landing there a day ago, and they are gone now. Did they cancel the landing and reboard their ships? Did they march up north? Have they gone into "stealth mode" and are happily marching (or riding the trains) down to Singapore? This has got me totally befuddled.
In the meanwhile, the KB is steadily steaming west near Midway - maybe they are looking to see if they can catch my AC TF napping up near Wake. Sorry - those kids have had enough play time for now.
Copper is obviously determined to make a jumbo-sized crater out of what used to be Clark Field. It looks like I'll have to abandon it sooner rather than later. There is no way I can get any planes repaired there.
There was nothing too unusual or exciting in the combat report for December 9. I had my LBA in Malaya get some target practice at Copper's nearest air fields. It's pointless to use up Allied twin-engine bombers on useless naval attacks until they have improved their credentials a lot. And Copper grabbed another couple of bases - I have nothing to stop him with, and no real intention of trying to do so at this time anyway.

RE: Keroro Gunsou goes to War (Copper vs ADavidB)
What a dumb mistake! Copper snuck in forces and took Makin while I had ships standing by doing nothing. I underestimated the time that it would take for one of my SC TFs to reach Makin, so there was no one there to stop the landing. And since Copper used a Fast Transport, they got away before my AC TF could spot them. Now Copper has the only level 3 port in the whole area and my South-Eastern Pacific strategy has gone kaput. Oh well, that will shorten my defensive lines a bit.
The KB is still steaming its way west, now nearly due north of Midway, so I guess that they are heading home for replenishment and new plans. Oh well, while the Cat’s away…<g>
Copper decided to put up some fighters on CAP, so my Brit bombers got smacked a bit:

I’ll have to rest those folks for a while now.
There is still no sign of a southwards advance into Malaya. I would really like to know where Copper’s forces have gone to. They are threatening Victoria Point in the north, so I’ll have to bug out from there.
We have also started trading bombardments in China:
Ground combat at Changsha

Defending force 50945 troops, 364 guns, 0 vehicles

Copper has Japanese forces spreading out all over the place in China. This could turn into a really strange battle, particularly if z.o.c. doesn’t work right. For now I’m planning as if it won’t work – if it does, then so much the better.

Runway hits 6
Aircraft Attacking:

In contrast, my B-17s demonstrate why I consider them so useless in the early part of the war:

B-17C Fortress x 6
No Allied losses

Otherwise, things are fairly quiet. I keep on feeling that Copper is readying a real hammer-blow to land somewhere, but I don’t know where yet.

RE: Keroro Gunsou goes to War (Copper vs ADavidB)
Well, what I was afraid of has appeared in turn 5 - Zone-of-Control problems. Copper sent a Japanese Division in China right through my Chinese division that was supposed to be blocking a crossroads. This is going to make things very messy in China. Does anyone know if the powers-that-be are working this problem?
Otherwise, things are fairly quiet. Copper is putting a lot of resources into China - even Bettys:

So much for the superiority of Allied ASW. I had three ASW TFs cruising the same area to the East of Hawaii. Two came up empty and this one got whacked. Every turn I am being scouted by those irritating sub-based Glen float planes. I've got a half dozen search squads flying.

RE: Keroro Gunsou goes to War (Copper vs ADavidB)
December 17 - the sub war continues, yet:
ASW attack at 22, 50
Japanese Ships
SS I-158
Allied Ships
DD Stronghold
DD Jupiter
DD Vampire
DD Vendetta
This crowd got two kicks at the cat and still came up empty.
The Chinese aren't doing so badly on the ground:
Ground combat at Wuchow
Japanese Shock attack
Attacking force 45853 troops, 477 guns, 17 vehicles
Defending force 50045 troops, 307 guns, 0 vehicles
Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 3)
Japanese ground losses:
4155 casualties reported
Guns lost 88
Vehicles lost 13
Allied ground losses:
262 casualties reported
Guns lost 5
The Philippinos, on the other hand:
Ground combat at Lingayen
Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 6240 troops, 85 guns, 0 vehicles
Defending force 1311 troops, 14 guns, 0 vehicles
Japanese assault odds: 8 to 1 (fort level 0)
Japanese forces CAPTURE Lingayen base!!!
Japanese ground losses:
41 casualties reported
Allied ground losses:
64 casualties reported
Guns lost 1
Defeated Allied Units Retreating!
Bataan will get pretty crowded soon since all of the Philippino troops are essentially the same as these guys.
There is a lot of other indecisive ground combat going on in China. Copper is spread out all over the map.

RE: Keroro Gunsou goes to War (Copper vs ADavidB)
December 18 -
Copper wrote to ask why his troops were getting stuck at 59 out of 60 miles. Hey, welcome to the club! <L> I'm guessing that these are his Chinese troops. They are either getting stuck in some part of the zone-of-control issue, or he is forgetting to supply them effectively.
Here is Copper continuing his air punishment of my troops in Malaya:
Day Air attack on 8th Indian Brigade, at 24, 45
Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 27
G3M Nell x 50
G4M1 Betty x 18
C5M Babs x 2
Ki-21 Sally x 28
No Japanese losses
Allied ground losses:
66 casualties reported
Guns lost 2
Aircraft Attacking:
22 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 1000 feet
14 x G4M1 Betty bombing at 10000 feet
18 x G3M Nell bombing at 10000 feet
3 x G3M Nell bombing at 10000 feet
18 x G3M Nell bombing at 10000 feet
3 x G3M Nell bombing at 10000 feet
6 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 1000 feet
4 x G4M1 Betty bombing at 10000 feet
5 x G3M Nell bombing at 10000 feet
3 x G3M Nell bombing at 10000 feet
As a comparison, here is how my "mighty" B-17s do…
Day Air attack on Legaspi, at 44, 55
Allied aircraft
B-17C Fortress x 3
No Allied losses (no hits on anything either.)
Aircraft Attacking:
3 x B-17C Fortress bombing at 6000 feet
I guess that they are getting tired of their joy rides. I'll have to send them to the rear and see if some R&R in the fleshpots of the behind-the-lines bases cheer them up.
Shit! Where did that come from?
TF 8 troops unloading over beach at Wewak, 52, 81
Japanese ground losses:
57 casualties reported
Nuts - he is starting to move into N.G. I have nothing within a thousand miles to do anything about this.
There is also a lot of inconclusive fighting in China, Malaya and the Philippines.

RE: Keroro Gunsou goes to War (Copper vs ADavidB)
December 19 –
Here are some really strange combat results:
Ground combat at Wuchow
Japanese Bombardment attack
Attacking force 596 troops, 24 guns, 0 vehicles
Defending force 49342 troops, 298 guns, 0 vehicles
Ground combat at Wuchow
Allied Bombardment attack
Attacking force 37436 troops, 278 guns, 0 vehicles
Defending force 40701 troops, 353 guns, 2 vehicles
Japanese ground losses:
2 casualties reported
Guns lost 1
Huh? Only 600 Japanese troops are attacking, but 41,000 are defending? What kind of troops did Copper bring up to Wuchow?
Here are some much less strange combat results:
Ground combat at Khota Bharu
Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 19420 troops, 252 guns, 14 vehicles
Defending force 4531 troops, 18 guns, 0 vehicles
Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 3
Japanese assault odds: 6 to 1 (fort level 3)
Japanese forces CAPTURE Khota Bharu base!!!
Japanese ground losses:
33 casualties reported
Guns lost 1
Allied ground losses:
214 casualties reported
Guns lost 3
Defeated Allied Units Retreating!
Even with a couple of week’s respite the Allied troops in Malaya aren’t worth much.
Copper also bagged Wewak against no opposition:
Ground combat at Wewak
Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 2349 troops, 10 guns, 0 vehicles
Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles
Japanese assault odds: 47 to 1 (fort level 0)
Japanese forces CAPTURE Wewak base!!!
This means he can build it up and there is nothing much I can do about it – I have no bases anywhere near from which to harass it.
Allied ASW has quieted down a bit – I guess that Copper’s subs have run out or torpedoes and are going back for refills.
The easy capture of Khota Bharu demonstrates why I’m not trying any active operations at this time – the forces that I have around aren’t up to the job, and I also don’t have resources in the right locations to enable me to try to mount any operations anyway. My biggest “ally” right now is distance – Copper’s lines of attack are lengthening and mine are shortening. I just want to be sure that I am ready to respond appropriately when Copper goes that “little bit too far” that allows me to strike.

RE: Keroro Gunsou goes to War (Copper vs ADavidB)
December 20 -
Pretty quiet day, other than:
Sub attack near Khota Bharu at 24, 45
Japanese Ships
DD Hibiki
DD Akatsuki
DD Arashio
DD Michishio
DD Oshio
DD Asashio
Allied Ships
SS KXII, hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
Poor old SS KXII went down. So far the Japanese ASW is doing quite well for itself.
Otherwise there was a bit of indecisive bombing and some ground combat that will lead to some Japanese captures of bases in a few turns, but I'm expecting that so every extra day I get is a bonus.

We've both pulled our ships back to a good extent and the game has turned into a series of mostly indecisive ground battles, except for those areas where I've pulled back and let Copper take a base. So, here are the December 21 ground battles to give an idea of where we are tussling. BTW - Copper has come up with what looks like a cure for his "59 miles and stop" problem, so some of these stalemates might change soon.

I actually don't mind this, because I am getting time to set up fuel and supplies in regions where I will need them for future operations. I'm being a lot more conservative against Copper than I typically am against the AI. By now in a typical scenario 15 against the AI both sides have usually lost several dozen ships. The big difference is that the AI never does anything in China.

RE: Keroro Gunsou goes to War (Copper vs ADavidB)
December 22, 1941 -
Copper forgot to send the combat results file to me for this turn, so after asking him for it I went ahead and set up my turn any way. I was surprised to find a tanker shot to bits, but still limping along. What I couldn't know was:
- Was it hit by a sub?
- Was it hit by LBA?
- Was the whole KB sitting just off shore, hiding in a rain cloud?
Fortunately Copper did send the combat results so I saw the "best case" result had occured:
Sub attack at 20, 59
Japanese Ships
SS I-121
Allied Ships
TK Empire Amethyst, Torpedo hits 2, on fire
My use of LBA against ports has been really feeble, with no damage most of the time. My little biplane torpedo bombers, on the other hand, finally got lucky:
Day Air attack on TF, near Khota Bharu at 24, 45
Allied aircraft
Swordfish x 3
Allied aircraft losses
Swordfish: 1 damaged
Japanese Ships
BB Haruna, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
Aircraft Attacking:
3 x Swordfish launching torpedoes at 200 feet
I hope that this isn't just FOW.
The ground war is continuing on pretty much as during the previous days with one difference:
Ground combat at Yenen
Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 22612 troops, 276 guns, 0 vehicles
Defending force 33286 troops, 206 guns, 0 vehicles
Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 2)
Japanese ground losses:
1452 casualties reported
Guns lost 38
Allied ground losses:
371 casualties reported
Guns lost 3
I guess Copper's guys were a bit too enthusiastic.

RE: Keroro Gunsou goes to War (Copper vs ADavidB)
December 23, 1941 -
This will be the last combat report for a few days - Copper is off for the US Thanksgiving weekend. We had our Thanksgiving last month, so I'm working while the US folks are war gaming.
Copper has finally gotten his act together in China and the Japanese onslaught is starting. I'm trying both a fighting retreat as well as a few attempts to distract him. It will be interesting to see if anything works. In the long run I expect that the terrain will be my "best friend" if I can move my troops adeptly enough. A similar thing is happening in Burma. But since I know what it takes to get through Burma, I'm hoping that the same thing happens to Japanese troops going north as does to British troops going south.
In the meanwhile, Copper is trying some sneaky stuff with his subs. For example, he has one sub sitting in a New Zealand harbor, doing nothing. I've got no ships there, so there is nothing for him to shoot at. At the same time, while my aircraft are locating his sub, they aren't firing at it, so we have a common level of ineptness at work there. Copper has also used a sub to mine the harbor at Soerabaja:
TF 1113 encounters mine field at Soerabaja (22, 65)
Allied Ships
MSW Abraham Crijnssen
It's a pain, but not critical - my mine sweepers will get some practice out of this. My ASW forces, on the other hand, are already getting some nice practice:
ASW attack at 32, 64
Japanese Ships
SS I-15, hits 1, on fire
Allied Ships
DD Thracian
DD Scout
DD Thanet
My LBA is also getting some practice, but not so successfully:
Day Air attack on TF, near Khota Bharu at 24, 45
Allied aircraft
Buffalo I x 21
Blenheim I x 7
Blenheim IV x 8
Hudson I x 10
Allied aircraft losses
Blenheim I: 2 damaged
Blenheim IV: 2 damaged
Hudson I: 2 destroyed, 1 damaged
Japanese Ships
BB Haruna, Bomb hits 4
BB Kongo
Aircraft Attacking:
4 x Blenheim IV bombing at 6000 feet
4 x Blenheim I bombing at 6000 feet
4 x Hudson I bombing at 6000 feet
2 x Hudson I bombing at 6000 feet
4 x Blenheim IV bombing at 6000 feet
3 x Blenheim I bombing at 6000 feet
3 x Hudson I bombing at 6000 feet
Day Air attack on TF, near Khota Bharu at 24, 45
Allied aircraft
Blenheim I x 7
Blenheim IV x 3
Hudson I x 6
Allied aircraft losses
Blenheim I: 2 damaged
Blenheim IV: 1 damaged
Hudson I: 2 destroyed, 1 damaged
Japanese Ships
BB Kongo
BB Haruna, Bomb hits 2
Aircraft Attacking:
4 x Blenheim I bombing at 6000 feet
2 x Hudson I bombing at 6000 feet
3 x Blenheim IV bombing at 6000 feet
3 x Blenheim I bombing at 6000 feet
3 x Hudson I bombing at 6000 feet
I bet that there was no damage to Haruna at all. I'm better off withstanding the "temptation" and instead using my LBA against land targets.
Here is a better attack:
Day Air attack on TF, near Songkhia at 24, 43
Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-Ib Oscar x 6
Allied aircraft
Buffalo I x 4
Blenheim IV x 6
No Japanese losses
Allied aircraft losses
Buffalo I: 7 destroyed, 1 damaged
Blenheim IV: 2 destroyed, 3 damaged
Japanese Ships
AP Kyushu Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire
AP Heiyo Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
Aircraft Attacking:
1 x Blenheim IV bombing at 6000 feet
4 x Blenheim IV bombing at 6000 feet
I wish that I could instruct my LBA to only go after "soft" targets like these instead of BBs.
Hmmm - a Japanese sub in a shipping lane halfway between the West Coast and Hawaii - what a pain!
ASW attack at 129, 62
Japanese Ships
SS I-26
Allied Ships
DD Dale
AK Mauna Ala
Next week ought to be interesting.

RE: Keroro Gunsou goes to War (Copper vs ADavidB)
December 24, 1941 -
Copper is back from "Turkey Day" and I am in a hurry to try to recover from my own "turkey dance" at the beginning of this match. Now that I've had a chance to think over the Chinese situation better, as well as follow the Russian AARs, I realize that I should have been doing things much more defensively in the Far East and I've lost three weeks worth of time. So I have to live with the fact that I've set myself up way to aggressively in China and it isn't helping things. I thought that I might catch Copper going the "wrong way" in a couple of places, but no such luck:
Ground combat at Nanning
Allied Deliberate attack
Attacking force 31125 troops, 230 guns, 0 vehicles
Defending force 13945 troops, 159 guns, 0 vehicles
Allied assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 3)
Japanese ground losses:
134 casualties reported
Guns lost 3
Allied ground losses:
280 casualties reported
Guns lost 4
Ground combat at Canton
Allied Deliberate attack
Attacking force 22837 troops, 165 guns, 0 vehicles
Defending force 29831 troops, 112 guns, 0 vehicles
Allied assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 4)
Japanese ground losses:
12 casualties reported
Allied ground losses:
561 casualties reported
Guns lost 26
I've got his forces engaged in a number of other places in China too. My strategy to slow down his advances is working to an extent, but only because he hasn't focused quite enough strength in the right place so far. I'll have to pull back and shorten my defensive lines quickly or he will break me into pieces and chew up my troops at his leisure.
And yes, I do intend to start to increase the fortification levels in Russia. I normally like to ignore Russia just so that I don't use up the supply, but now I've got a different view on it.
Copper is also becoming active in other areas:
TF 19 troops unloading over beach at Biak, 46, 77
Japanese ground losses:
51 casualties reported
There's nothing I can do about it. Copper will be able to develop Biak at his leisure in time.
TF 34 troops unloading over beach at Dadjangas, 41, 62
Japanese ground losses:
43 casualties reported
TF 34 troops unloading over beach at Dadjangas, 41, 62
Japanese ground losses:
24 casualties reported
This one caught me a bit by surprise - it's not a developed base, and I assumed that he would be going after the developed bases in the Philippines first. But it is a good move because he can march from there to my bases.

RE: Keroro Gunsou goes to War (Copper vs ADavidB)
December 25, 1941 -
Well, the situation in China continues to deteriorate as the extent of my early foolishness becomes more apparent. It will be interesting to see what I can disentangle and move back to more defensible positions. So far Copper hasn't amassed large enough forces to start to drive me back, but it appears to only be a matter of time.
In Malaya, on the other hand, his troops are having little problem moving my troops out of blocking positions:
Ground combat at 30, 34
Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 23772 troops, 255 guns, 120 vehicles
Defending force 6500 troops, 95 guns, 0 vehicles
Japanese assault odds: 3 to 1
Japanese ground losses:
366 casualties reported
Guns lost 9
Vehicles lost 1
Allied ground losses:
324 casualties reported
Guns lost 13
Defeated Allied Units Retreating!
Fortunately, my troops are still on the road, so I'll have a chance to see if I can retreat them far enough and fast enough to get them out of harm's way.
Copper is also starting to land more troops at various places on the north of NG, and nearby:
Ground combat at Biak
Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 711 troops, 3 guns, 0 vehicles
Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles
Japanese assault odds: 26 to 1 (fort level 0)

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles
Japanese assault odds: 34 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese Ships
AP Dainiunyo Maru
AP Gotake Maru
AP Igasa Maru
Allied Ships
PT TM-4
PT TM-5
PT TM-6

PT TM-9
I guess, for all those folks who felt that PT boats were too effective in earlier versions, this should be comforting. At least the invasion TF did back off and not land troops.
This is a real strange one - I'm still not sure why my TF ended up where it did - I expected it to be far away from there:
Day Time Surface Combat at 42,62

RE: Keroro Gunsou goes to War (Copper vs ADavidB)
December 27, 1941 - We're back. Copper has been busy, so he has only been able to return one turn during the past few days. While he's been off, I've been studying all the other AARs and modifying my strategy appropriately. Copper is also modifying his strategy, and has started to fast-transport troops into various undefended smaller bases in the Philippines, DEI and Northern New Guinea. He also hasn't forgotten Malaya.

BTW - for some reason I can't fathom, Copper has subs "parked" in the harbors in New Zealand. My planes won't attack the subs, and I'm not sending any ships there, so the subs just keep on sitting. I wonder if he set them to AI control and forgot about them. Maybe he is planning an early invasion of NZ? I don't really care - I'm concerned about the Eastern Pacific at this point - the ANZAC folks can take care of themselves.
