New Book (to me)

Post by TheElf »

Stopped at the Boeing Museum of Flight in Seattle this friday while on travel. Outstanding!

Just a couple of the displays, Bf-109E, P-40N in AVG colors, Ki-43II, Spit MkIX, P-38, P-47, FG-1 Corsair, F4F-3, YAK-9 and many more.

Perhaps the most impressive, and the reason I stopped, the ONLY FW-190D in flying condition. It is a D-13 with 3 20mm cannon vice the normal 2x20mm and 2xMG131's. Absolutely stunning.

Anyway my new book is "Japanese Army Air Force Fighter Units and Their Aces: 1931-1945 by Ikuhiko Hata, Yasuho Izawa, and Christopher Shores. ISBN 1 902304 89 6. So far I am only to 1941 and the Malaya campaign. It provides great info (so far) on the losses sustained by the IJAAF during the war, but the claims are pretty high (can never trust a pilot right?).

Almost forgot. The gift shop was top-notch. The book collection alone was worth the price of admission, $12.00 US.

I missed the Seattle museum (went there two years ago).

Was one of those things were -I- really wanted to go, but -
"We're here to visit Robin & John, and they wouldn't find it nearly as interesting as you would."
Mumble : "Losers."
"What were you saying honey?"
"Nothing love, where are the keys."

So we went this market where they threw fish at each other, and stood in-line for 2 hours to got the top of that stupid Space Needle. [8|]

Focke Wulf would have been way cooler. [:@]

Ever been to Dayton, OH to see the "USAF Museum"? It's Disney World for airplane buffs. The "Museum of Naval Aviation" in Pensacola, FL is exceptional also (altho only about 1/4 the size of Dayton). You can spend DAYS at either museum. Also thot they did a great job with the "8th AF Museum" in Savanna, GA.

Hrumph. Now I want to take road-trip.

Those planes you saw in Seattle used to be in the Champlin Fighter Museum here in Mesa, Az. I got the chance to see all of them many times including the 190d as it was being refurbushed. My fav had to be the P-38. I was really sad when they were sold and moved last year. Glad you got the chance to enjoy them as we had.

Let me be the first to thank you for your sacrifice[;)] I feel your pain Quark. If I had the only Dora in flyable condition to stare at on a whim and it was ripped away from me I'd be upset too. Unfortunately for me I STILL have to travel 1000miles to see Yellow 10. It's worth it though. Beautiful.

Have you heard about the Anton's being reproduced in the New Zealand? I don't know how reliable this info is, but one of the Information guys at the Boeing museum said that somebody finally decided to build a flyable Me-262 in Everett, WA. I'm skeptical, but will be searching the Web tonight to verify.

No I hadn't heard. I have seen enough engines in various museums to think it could be done.

Yeah it was nice to see the Dora. Actually my(at the time) 4 yr old son was the one who got me this close to the dora as it was being refurbished. We were looking at some art when my son commented on the Corsairs shooting down the bad enemy planes. A WW2 pacific vet volunteer heard him and thanked me for bringing him up right and then offered to show us the hangar where the plane was being worked on. We got THIS close.... Actually almost every time we went one of the vets would let us get real close so my son could really see the planes. Sigh.

At least we still have a private P-51 and a flyable B-17G here. There's a restaurant at the end of the runway where the planes are based called Anzio Landing. Talk about nostalgia. Anyway that's our favorite stopping place after touring the museums there. More than once we have seen the B-17 taxing right by our table's window and take off. Too cool.
