Sinister Twilight Runsilentrundeep vs. Hipper
Hello to all,
This is my first AAR so let me know how I am doing and any suggestions will be appreciated. It is a “game” AAR and not an alternate history. I may throw in some flourishes here and there.
First I want to thank Alikchi for being so understanding about having to give up our game. I see through the AAR that it is going quite well. It is interesting to see what Cruft and Alikchi and Cruft are doing with “my” game. Congrats on a rousing fight.
I am playing Hipper, I am the Allies and he is the Rising Sun. Hipper is planning an AAR of his own, so loose lips sink ships.
Stats:
Scenario 15
Allied Sub Doctrine on
IJN Sub Doctrine off
No replacements or base building at start.
Reinforcements +-15
2 day turns.
Allied Damage control on.
Dec 7th Surprise, non historical turn 1.
House rule. One port strike announced before game, that port will not create any TF. Hipper chose Pearl.
Ok I know what your thinking, why did I choose to have doctrine on. Well I was young and stupid. Satisfied?!
Basic Doctrine: I am planning to fight a delaying action until 43 then I will punch back hard, the goal of the first year is to survive. I will fight with calculated risks but will not throw anything into a mirage of a true opportunity. I judge Hipper to be a good player and over aggression on my part will mean him drinking Sake on the Golden Gate bridge. I plan to be patient and vigilant. I have been burned in the past with early aggression, especially against well defended bases with plenty of Nells and Bettys (two names I hate as the Allies).
I plan visual aids as plans develop. So please forgive the text for now.

Trends and Intentions
Ok as for plans for the next game month I will break it up by Theater.
Centpac
I am about to get hit and hit hard, I sent Lexington and Enterprise to Baker Island at max speed. I wll try and run with the fast elements of the fleet after PH. I will keep the surviving BBs in port to attract the planes and run with the rest.
I am gambling on a week stay by the Kido Butai. I am loading all of the Centpac stuff on to transports to reinforce the HI and the guardians, Wake, Johnston, Palmyra and Midway ASAP. If I were Hipper I would hit CentPac hard with follow up invasions, and since I am paranoid I will assume that is the case. Besides the West Coast and Karachi. I am placing Pearl the top of my “Defend at all cost” list. Wake will not be relieved and probably never retaken, militarily it costs too much.
SoPac
The supply line for Australia has to be given a low priority at this point. It is the weakest part of my defense line and reinforcing heavily at this time would probably lead to disaster. I am planning on losing New Caledonia, Fiji and Samoa quickly. Since there is plenty of ocean to the south of those islands I do not view this as fatal. It would mean a delay in convoys to Australia and New Zealand, not and end to them. I am consolidating assets on the islands and evacuating shipping. The Art convoy at Canton is going to Samoa.
ANZAC (and SWpac)
New Zealand and Australia need to hold until relieved. That being said I am not reinforcing Rabaul in any way. My first out post will be Morsbey. I am planning to take resources where I can scrape them up to defend ANZAC.
NoPac
I am sending one of the Anchorage regiments to Dutch Harbor, a gamble I know but I would like to make Alaska a little tough for Hipper. There is really nothing much there except Anchorage and it really is not close enough to the rest of the US to cause damage except as a raider port. So I will gamble a little here.
West Coast USA (and Canada Command)
Consolidate assets, keep the air assets in place for now, I am a little paranoid about a long range carrier strike. It is a long shot but that would be really really bad. I am sending most of CenPac’s ground stuff to HI right away.
China
The C of the CBI effort is my biggest gamble. I am running a Hedgehog strategy. I am assuming that Hipper is going for the easy kills first to grab some resources early. A strike along the Changsha, Kwelin Chunking axis first then the bigger threat, the Homan Sian axis. I am running all of the armies in the vicinity to those key cities as fast as there legs can carry them. I know that makes them easy to encircle but I have a feeling he will not be the subtle. I feel he will win the first couple of battles but I want him to bleed in China so he will stop and look elsewhere for resources and Industry. China simply needs to stay in the field to have done their part. I am making floating reserves behind the key cities and am pulling troops from the south (where I am also consolidating in the bases) north to act as a strategic reserve. I am also sending all 9 SEAC Chinese divisions into Burma with Sitllwell.
SEAC
Simply put delaying action in lower Burma, a concerted effort to keep upper Burma by the Kuomintang and most of the Indian Army defending India proper from the land and sea. I will try and keep the Andamans (a long shot but worth it) so I can build it in to an airbase to keep the IJN out. Ceylon will be reinforced and most of the Malaya air force will be stripped early and sent to India for better airframes and training. The Far East Fleet will stay in Ceylon to defend the Bay of Bengal.
USAFFE-Philippines
To paraphrase Marshall “Sometimes men have to die”. I evacuated the fleet and deployed the subs. As soon as I get the PPs I will pull the Asiatic Fleet HQ out. I will defend the “Lingayen Line” (The line of hexes north of Clark) as a delaying action with the main events in Clark and Bataan. In the south of Luzon a retreat to Manila and then to Clark. I will evac the air force as soon as PP permit. I already sent the Clark B-17s to Singapore as a little bluff to look like I plan to defend Malaya, more importantly as a precursor to get them out of the southern resource area altogether. I kept the PTs in Manila to play with. Everything else went to Balikapapan and Soerbaja. The other Islands will hold out as long as they can.
Malaya
The best kept prisoner of war camp. I plan to evacuate the best troops, the air HQs and the air force and move the fleet out. What I will do with these forces, circumstances at the time will dictate. I consider them “found money” to spend how I please. The fleet will join the defense of India. I replaced Percival with Haig to put a little teeth in the delaying action. Percival is now defending the Raffles Hotel against drunken journalists with long bar tabs. He will surrender shortly.
DEI
Wavell will do his best with what he has. I do not intend to reinforce this area. I will also send any slow ships out of the area and only fight with cruisers destroyers and PT boats. (I am not a fan of slow battleships on the whole. I view them as powerful but fragile weapons platforms at best and slow targets at worst.) I will try and salvage the air force for use in other Theaters.
My goal is for it to take Hipper 4 months to take the SRA, this is relatively ambitious (and historically correct). I also realize that about half of these plans will get chucked in the first week. That is why I have not made them in a meticulous fashion. You can over plan and lose flexibility. This should be fun. I am waiting for the planes to leave the KB and race for Oahu.
Any input is appreciated and I hope you enjoy this AAR.

12/7-12/8/1941
12/7-12/8/41
Pearl Harbor strikes sank the West Virginia, Nevada, California, Tennessee, and the New Orleans.
Japanese landings at Kuching, Amborira, Aparri, Laoag, Guam and Tarawa. It looks like a play for Changsha is building.
Pretty conservative first Japanese turn. I look for followup landings soon. No landing in Malaya as of yet but I think the major landing occurred at Songkhia. Intel states that the IJA are planning for Lingayen.
I moved my carriers to Tarawa to counter the landing there, they are in the neighborhood and should be able to do some damage. I evacuated any ship above 30 Knots from Pearl toward Johnston Island, the idea being that it is the least likely direction. I turned back one of my convoys out of Seattle (bound for Oahu) to send later. The naval units in the PI, DEI and the PI are converging on Balikapapan and Soerbaja.
I moved the Saratoga south to rendezvous with the other carriers.
The Chinese are moving towards the target cities, it looks like Changsha is the first battle.
Also the CAP over PH was shot down by Zeros at a 10 to 1 ratio. Sheesh.

Ground combat at Kuching
(Large force in Kuching landing)
Allied Bombardment attack
Attacking force 1114 troops, 2 guns, 0 vehicles
Defending force 12315 troops, 132 guns, 0 vehicles
Sheesh.

Par for the course with Pearl. I am popping rolaids until he leaves.

RE: 12/7-12/8/1941
Very heavy Jap air losses, especially Kates. Even with FOW he lost close to 45 elite carrier pilots. Those wont be coming back--ever.
It is a fair trade-off. Obsolete BB's for elite carrier pilots and, secondarily, planes. If you can avoid losing too many points for auto victory, I think the second day attacks are fraught with peril for the Japanese.

2nd PH raid.
I agree, if he goes again he will probably hurt more, I am going to pull out the fast movers out and leave the slow ones in, If Hipper wants to raid PH again the cost vs. return will tip even further away for him.
This is also one of the interesting things about 2 day turns, he could not have scrapped the second raid if he wanted to.

December 9th and 10th
The KB has left for the Marshalls, my sortie to the SE of my Cruisers and destroyers ran
into one of my TFs in striking distance, my mistake lost the San Francisco and the St. Louis. That puts the total sunk at the PH strike at 4 BBs, 2 CAs and a CL. Not bad but could have been better (and much worse). He lost some good aircraft and pilots, I lost quite a bit of crummy aircraft and some good ones.
The evacuation of Singapore is going smoothly, one brigade is already in Java and a brigade and a RAF HQ is being loaded, so far no air attacks since the first round. The Japanese are busy hitting upper Malaya.
Sarawak still holds out, the plucky British units deserve commendations. Hong Kong is being bombed heavily with planes and artillery. The landings on Wake has begun and Kendari is being invaded.
The first IJN ships have been sunk by Halsey and the Enterprise, two PCs were sunk at Tarawa. A bit of a pathetic start but a start none the less. I have sent the TF back to Baker to rendezvous with the Lexington, the Saratoga TF is moving south also.
The IJN CVL TFs are in the Celeb Sea and just north of Ambonia. No intel to back it up but I think Balikapapan is the next target, his CVL TF is accompanied by a powerful surface force and his heading in that direction. My surface forces are much smaller so they have been evacuated.
Asiatic fleet HQ is being pulled out of Manila. And force Z has left for Ceylon.

into one of my TFs in striking distance, my mistake lost the San Francisco and the St. Louis. That puts the total sunk at the PH strike at 4 BBs, 2 CAs and a CL. December 11-12
December 11-12
Swift resolutions and shock these two days.
Gram fell on the 11th and the fight for Changsha began. Bloody for the Chinese but the fortress level did not go down, Changsha will be a bloody mess soon and hopefully not just for Kai Shek.
Kuching finally fell, faced with overwhelming odds the Brit fort surrendered and the support personal melted into the jungle.
The shock is that Hong Kong fell on the first day! Not even that many IJA casualties.
The CVL task force in the Celebes sea jumped 2 more merchant groups and faded back toward Palau. I am planning to make a run with the Asiatic fleet HQ through the Borneo strait.
Kandari fell as well. The heavy surface forces seem to have left, leaving merchants in the harbor. I slinked a PT group into the area and will attempt to make a raid.
12/12
Wake still holds as does Changsha. The IJA is back to bombarding Changsha.
Ambonia fell today and Tarawa is occupied.
Most of the fleet that fled Pearl has not come back.
Nimitz replaced Kimmel
The two Carriers (E and Lex) have rendezvous and are now called Task Force Jasper, commanded by Halsey. They are steaming back to Pearl as is the Saratoga group.
A Marine Bn is moving toward Johnston as is a Mining TF. I am starting to build up the HI area.
After next turn I will have a week in review and unit commendations.
Intel inconclusive today. Build up in lower Japan probably to build for a major PI move.
Here is the blotter.

December 13-14
Note: Will do analysis every 10 days instead of weekly. 10 days is a nice even number and fits well for it beind 5 turns.
Not much going on, withdrew air units from the PI to OZ and from forward positions in the DEI (where they were getting murdered) to Java. 3 of my destroyers got jumped by land based air and were sunk (Furlong was killed). My surface group did not find anything in Mendano but I am sending them back. It looks like the IJN is sending heavies in also but I would rather have Doorman fight a hero’s fight this time. Several transports finally sunk from earlier strikes. The convoys from the States are about half way to the HI as it recovers. KB is probably in the Marshalls getting new pilots. My CVs are moving on Pearl. More Evacs planned for Malaya.
Oh and I liberated the Thai town of Rahaeng, not much there but it shores up the north flank. Changsha will probably fall next turn, I have a blocking force behind it to stop any cheap exploitation moves. I am already moving forces out so they can recover faster; I am also releasing southern reserves to shore up the center. PS IJA/N have landed at Davao.
Wake holds out. Tarawa finally fell (with no defenders?).
Blotter as follows.

December 15-16th Fall of Changsha
Note: I will cut the blotter tends to just muck things up, if there is anything interesting I will add it.
Changsha fell, after bleeding the IJA for a day the KMT gave up the ghost. Am planning to bomb the city with the 20 or so bombers I have, I have a reserve behind the city hopefully it will stall the IJA drive.
I am resting my CVs in Pearl. The Saratoga is coming in on fumes, lately I have been running out of fuel. This is probably why my confrontation in Kendari never happend. Well gotta have the gas.
Strong IJN force coming toward Bali/Java, maybe multiple carriers. I am too tired to make the calculation if this is the KB running at full speed across the pacific, It probably isnt but I am Evacuating Soerbaja just the same. It is within 2 days steam.
Nells from Borneo are playing havoc with my evacuation of Malaya, which is now being attacked. I will try and move my transports to India and Evacuate out of Malacca.
Light IJA probe toward Burma and Wake still holds. The defenders deserve a commendation as well as the now dead defenders of Kuching.
