Do you mean AGP and AGC?
PO2 US Navy (1980-1986);
USS Midway CV-41 (1981-1984)
Whidbey Island, WA (1984-1986)
Naval Reserve (1986-1992)

Short range, low profile, supply ships for taking care of small islands.

They sometimes can go right under the nose of aircover. If he sets to 100 feet he can chew you up, however.

If you mean - what are AGs good for ... if you've ever played UV .. you might have used them as the "ant frieght" ... that is what I use them for ... send them to Rabaul ... and build up staging bases ... every 2 hexes ... and then run computer controlled convoys between the staging bases to bring supply forward to places which are under allied air cover. Individual AG are almost invulnerable to air power - but can be shot up by Subs ( on the surface ) or PT boats ... but for a while at least they can be useful. Of course if you aren't into the micro-mangement necessary to set up and run one of these bug navaies ... try your chances with the AK/AP instead. The other use is regular runs around the home islands and to Korea and China - basically any where that you have lots of bases close together ( 2 hexes apart ).

Also somewhat useful in Dutch East Indies where the distances between bases is shorter. Since they load/unload quite fast, it can be good to use them in those ports that generate supplies (resource hexes), that are at a Port(0). It would take forever to load up an AK over the beach. But you can put a swarm of AGs there, to quickly load the the supplies (you can't haul resources) over the beach, and run to a real port where they can be unloaded and put onto an AK.
