game is still crashing very often :/

Post by alek2004xx »

Hello, when I started to play I found this problem:

a)I have the last patch (earlier I couldn't play because of problems with music - you know what I mean because a lot of people have the same problem) but the game quit to windows very often - especially when I point new destinations or when I form new TF.In generall - when I perform some action. This problem occur some 1-3 times per turn.

It's horribly annoying :(

I have the same problem... After I applied the v1.30 patch I can no longer click individual ships to see their info, the game always crashes. It also crashes randomly, usually every 15-20 minutes or so, several times per turn...

Thats odd. I would recommend you completely uninstall the game (saving your saved games first of course) and the reinstall and patch to 1.3 before doing anything. This should give you a nice clean install to work with. See if that cures your problem...

Also, check what is running in the background of your computer. Check for viruses and spyware.

A re-install and spyware removal did the trick; I can now once again see the individual ship windows without the game crashing. Unfortunately, it still crashes several times per turn. There's no real pattern, it just crashes seemingly at random.

Perhaps it would help if I update to the latest DirectX?

You could try that and check for latest drivers for your video and sound cards...

I've updated everything I can think of now (video, sound, DirectX), but it still keeps crashing several times per turn...

Any other suggestions?

What exactly is happening at the moment it crashes on you, are you looking at a ships detail? air to air combat running? What...

Lots More Detail on what is going on will help us understand what is going on and maybe help you.

Different every time, I can't see any kind of pattern except that it generally takes place after 20 minutes or so of playing. It usually crashes when I click something, it can be a ship's details, the "Done" button after combat, the "Save" button, etc. There is no single thing which will always cause a crash, as far as I can tell.

It should perhaps be noted that only the game crashes, nothing else. And it does not cause any general slowness, it crashes quickly and neatly, immediately returning to the desktop.

Btw, my chipset is a VIA KT133, don't know the manufacturer, but it's the original one included with the Compaq Presario 5000.

Ok try changing the name of the sound directory to nosound, and see if it still happens you might be one of the folks who are still having the sound crash.

You can update your Via chipset drivers here

You might also want to locate the VIA chipset upgrade, it's called Via 4in1 chipset patch. Should make your machine work better at best.

The simulation might also be maxing out system resourses in one big usage spike.

I installed the chipset upgrade. No change. Then I renamed the sound folder, et voilá, the game stopped crashing. So I guess it's safe to assume that the sound was causing the crashes all along.

Is there any way for me to play with sound without crashes?

Is your sound onboard the motherboard or do you have a PCI or ISA sound card?

Also, if its onboard, who provides the drivers, if its a sound card who's the manufacturer of the board?

What operating system are you using?

It's a PCI card, a Creative Labs Sound Blaster PCI 128. I'm using Windows XP Professional. I wasn't able to find any sound drivers more recent than 2002. I do have an onboard sound card too though, I'll try using that instead.

The PCI 128 was not one of Creatives best and not the worst they were all pretty much SB16, it was made to be used by certain manufactures, like the Vibra card.

You maybe better off with the onboard sound. Check to see who's sound drivers they used and find the newest drivers or complete audio package, Although I think WinXp might already have the drivers.

Also do you have the setup disk that came with the machine? If you do put it into your CD and let it autoplay it may show you what you need to install for the onboard sound & your motherboard.

The official support site (the Compaq support part of HP's site) for my computer lists the most current onboard sound card driver as "ADI Soundmax 1881 Audio Driver", dated August 2002. I'll try disabling the SB PCI 128 and re-active the onboard sound card and see what happens.

Just switch your speaker system wires over to the onboard ports after you load the drivers and leave the PCI 128 as is. You will have two sound sources.

I tried using the onboard card, no difference. The game still keeps crashing every turn.

WOW!!!

The only thing I can think of is change your sound folder name back to it's original name, reapply the 1.20 sound patch and reboot your machine.

Sorry patch version 1.30.

Also, try contacting Support@Matrixgames.com

Which 1.3 patch did you use to go from 1.21 to 1.3?

I think I remember Mr. Frag being asked a question similar to this on another thread. If I remember correctly the big 1.3 patch and the smaller 1.3 patch have different sound files. I think the smaller file was for people who didn't have sound problems with 1.21 and the larger one was for people who did. When the other person applied the other patch it solved his problem.

You may want to PM Mr. Frag and see if he remembers this more clearly than I do.
