Military Acronyms

I was looking at a few threads today. One that I was looking at was a thread by K. G. Erwin.

In the thread he received a responce that contained an Military Acronym. I never heard it and it came from an Aussie, it was "WOFTAM". The best I could figure out what it ment, I also asked around and I came up with a consensus that it ment Waste of F_ _ king time and material.

The U. S. Military has dozens if not hundreds of acronyms, what is not odd is just about everyone contains the word F_ _ K in all it's wonderful diverse spellings and usages.

SNAFU
FUBAR
AWAF
FIGMO
FTWIGO

The U. S. Marine's had one "GIZMO", If they didn't know what it was, or what it did, it was a GIZMO.

I wonder how many in this group could dig up, past or present acronyms just see how many there really are through out the world's Militaries, I believe that there are a many represented here at the Matrix Forums.

Please be discrete with your spellings, I think this just might be fun.

Rick, one of my all-time cynical favorites is from the Cold War--the NATO-Warsaw Pact's shared policy of having enough nukes on hand to kill the entire world's population several times over. It was called "MAD (Mutually-Assured Destruction)".

Close, the M stands for Money and it refers to the Reserve (or the "part-time soldiers" as they are officially called now).

My Favorite heard routinely around teh War College is BOGSAT. One of our most often used post wargame analysis techniques, and often used in lieu of a wargame to gain "critical insight" into a problem...

WHne I recently told a Flag officer what it menat he didn;t believe it until it was confirmed by 3 others...

The funny thing to me is that I never really heard those acronyms used in conversation when I was in the service. We used sayings like, “he was ate up like a soup sandwich.” Or Jones drank to much last night and was seriously Upgefu*ked at PT. (it was a bastardization of German and English. Another popular nickname for idiot soldiers that we had was Rock. (as in he is as smart as a rock) I never heard any one use FUBAR or its many cousins. Another term we used was “It’s just another day in the Cav.” Meaning that it wasn’t done right if it wasn’t hurry up and wait or why do it the smart way when we can do it the hard way. I think those acronyms are used mostly by military writers for flavor. Obviously some people use them in the service but they aren’t that common.
