What's happening at 100 feet?

Post by stall84 »

I believe the manual says if you set a fighter or fighter bomber to a ground attack at 100 feet, that it will bomb and strafe the target..... however on the combat animation it only shows the planes strafing, and the impact of the strike is usually less than one would expect from a fighterbomber strike.

Is this right? I'm thinking they arent dropping their bombs, and are just strafing

I've had aircraft making Naval Attacks at 100 ft. and they are dropping bombs. I suspect that what you're seeing is just an artifact of the combat animations.
This game does not have a learning curve. It has a learning cliff.

Any bugs I report are always straight stock games.

I've had the same problem, some Zeros and even Nates were set at 100 feet naval attack for several turns. There were some PTs around, my fighters attacked several times, all attacks were in normal range, and all they did was strafing. Both Zeros and Nates attacked in separate flights, and only strafing happened. I've watched both animations and reports after attack, only strafe hits, no bomb hits. There were just too many attacks to say "ok, they tried to bomb but missed", more than 50 Zero flights were made (several attacks each consisting of 9-25 Zeros) and still no bombs dropped. Skip bombing (at 100 feet) is supposed to be very accurate when experience of your pilots is above 60, and my Zeros were all about 80...
So, what am I doing wrong?

That's what I'm talking about....... It seems like they are strafing only, and not dropping their bombs

I've seen the same thing, but I've also noticed the combat animation seems to go quick for naval 100 ft attacks. I think it shows strafing always and only shows bombs if there are hits. It seems that way with my Martins. They show up strafing and only the one that got a hit showed any bombing graphics. I think they are bombing, but just missing.

Same here. I've had my beaufighters on 100ft naval attack and no bomb hits (ie. they are not dropping bombs) during 1 month of attacking japanese transports. They seem to be pretty useless now when compared to UV.
If some is good, and more is better, then too much is just right!

I think they just don't show the bomb attacks.. I have had Nates and Zeros attack PT boats at 100 feet and both only SHOW straffing runs, but they have both hit PTs with their little 30 kg bombs. They don't always hit, about 1/3 of the time they do. So it is working - the bombs are being used - it is just not being shown.

You may be right Xargun, now that I thought of it, I don't know if I saw the bomb animations or not. I know the ships only show up on screen for a short time. Strafing attacks seem to occur a lot quicker then regular bombing runs. But I have had combat results say bombs hit. I don't know. It may also be those dang PT boats are really tough to hit with bombs.

I think they start hitting something with bombs with 80+ exp. I get 3-4 hits per attack of 12 Beaufighters. BTW why MK21 doesn't have a torpedo?

well that makes more sense if it is experience related, this game has soooo many variables it's hard to pinpoint what is actually causing an undesired effect
