Mynok vs Yank -- Scenario 26: Mynok's Musings

Post by Mynok »

Yet Another Bi-polar AAR

Yank and I will be doing the two-thread AAR bit for our game using Lemurs scenario 26. I'm playing Japanese.

Options and House rules:

Sub Doctrines Off
Fog of War On
Advanced Weather On
Allied Damage Control On
Historical First Turn Off
Vary Setup Off
First turn surprise On
Reinforcements Very Variable

1. ASW TF's. No more than 6 to 8 ships allowed. No Admirals allowed to command.
2. No night bombing of airfields, ports or non-manpower resources by non-night airplane groups.
3. No 4E bomber missions under 6000', except for ASW missions.
4. No breakdown of LCU's in combat to reduce fatigue and disruption.
5. Jap LCUs may not exit Manchuria without changing HQ's.

I've made no restrictions on his first turn moves. Frankly, I'd rather torp his BB's in the open water. :)

General approach I'm taking: conservation makes for a longer life. You won't see me galavanting around the Pacific willy-nilly, nor am I going to be shotgun-invading half the known world on turn one.

Phase I is to secure the SRA, including Burma, and I plan to accomplish this by April 1, 1942.

Phase II is to secure the China-Singapore rail line and ease my transportation worries for the long haul. Also will be securing Bismarks and New Guinea. Should be complete by the end of 1942.

Phase III is building defenses in the Pacific and making a serious push at China. If auto-victory looks doable by conquering India or Russia, that is the route I will take. If not, then it will be time to sit back for the long haul.

This scenario gives me some benefits in my army air force by allowing better upgrade paths for the many Nate sentai's. I'm counting on that advantage to help me over the 4:1 hump in 1943 by conquering China.

My production plan is pretty simple. I halted all research factories, and will turn on repair of them until X days before they arrive, where X is the number of factories to be repaired. Very few factories are expanded initially, but some are changed. My changes are based on 2ndACR's notes with some modifications. The goal is to get decent Zero, Val and Kate production going ASAP. We'll see how it goes.

Shinano is halted and Shoho is accelerated. Will convert some merchant shipyards and accelerate Junyo, Hiyo and the Unryu carriers as well. More merchant shipyards will be built later once my real resource status is known. This scenario has some additional ships that will likely not be built, including an extra Yamato-class BB. There are some extra DE's that will be built. I'll make some calculations in Jan 42 to determine if some Yugumo's can be accelerated. I believe in radar.

That's the strategic plan. Let's begin the details. I don't like reading vast combat reports, so I'm consolidating into a highlight-reel structure.

SS Sealion hit one of my mines. Frog-gigging nails a clam. [:'(]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Air raid: Singapore doesn't net much. Will need to hit it again. Bombed from too
high an altitude most likely, but want to save those pilots. I'm not overly
worried about Blenheims et al right now as it is.

Several small Allied strikes on Malaysia and Philipines TF. Nine B-17's in one raid,
so an effort must be made to find where these guys are coming from and clean up.
It looks like Cagayan, but my recon doesn't show anything there yet.

Air cover moving into bases near the front to provide LRCAP over the landing groups.
Once Aparri and Davao are up, no shipping will be moving in the Philipines without
getting bombed.

KB sights a lot of the fleeing TF northeast of Pearl. Heads that way for some deep-water torp practice. Sub packs await the devastation between the targets and West Coast.

Several sub sightings with ASW hits reported. We'll see how it pans out on the sunk list. ASW hits a sub at Vigan.

Subs sink MSW Ballarat, torp a TK and an AP, and one gets killed by a huge TF. Looked like a refugee TF though, not an ASW TF.

Troops continue to unload, but Wake gets the worst of it. Some ships won't survive.
Wake should fall soon, though, as an extra Nav Gd unit is in the attack.

scheduled to find out.

Legaspi, Wake, Guam, Vigan and Aparri captured on the ground today.

Clark was hit again with minimal results, indicating evacuation.

KB torpedo'd 4 BB's with one sinking (Tennessee). Moving into range to gut the
rest. If I can get a fish into all of them, my subs should be able to chase
them right into San Fran. KB will only hang around for one more strike before
heading back home to replenish. Bunch of lesser ships sunk, including a few
minelayers and mine sweepers. It only buys time, but time is all I've got right
now.

Davao and Khota Baru scheduled to fall this turn. Changsha will go down in a few
days.

One sub and a PG (at Wake) lost so far. Expect to lose an AK from the Wake TF, however.

Looking good so far. Approve of your plan - make sure you accelerate Unryu, Katsuragi, Taiho, etc. You need to at least has a semi-credible Kido Butai in existence lategame or the Allies run utterly rampant.

Also - if you do win by VPs in 43, will you continue the game?

I don't like accelerating Taiho. Too expensive to be worth it. I can accelerate two additional Unryu's for the same cost.

Whether we continue will be decided at the moment of victory probably.

Another sub lost interdicting the rats fleeing Pearl. Didn't even get a shot off. :(

Meanwhile KB puts more fish into BB's. Three are reported sunk, and Arizona is
almost certain to do so as well. Time for KB to return home a recoup.

On the ground, Davao falls. Hong Kong assault force in place but preparing for a
couple days to reduce disruption. Changsha assault force is bombarding. Might need
two more divs there. A probe will be done tomorrow.

14th Army (16th & 48th Div, 65th Bde) is on Luzon. Engineers and armor are landing in support tomorrow. Tanks will take Laong and the full assault force will mass at Vigan. Should be ready in a week to push for Clark field. Air support is being setup at Legaspi and Aparri. Army air will operate from Aparri and Navy from Legaspi and Davao. 16th Div is landing at Legaspi.

16th Army (2nd, 4th Divs) is deploying to Davao. Borneo and Kendari will be invaded from this base. 4th div is taking a detour through Luzon to help 14th army.

25th Army (Imp Gds, 5th and 18th Divs) preparing for Malaysia. Khota Baru will fall in a couple days. Waiting for supply to build up. Imp Gds hurrying down from Thailand. Victoria Point was abandoned, so 1st Tank Rgt will conquer that alone.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Units are preparing for the rest of the West Borneo ports. We will not be taking these until the airfields at Singapore, Sinkawang and Tarakan are taken however.

South Seas is preparing for Rabaul. Should be ready in a couple weeks. KB will support this, then move to support the DEI operations. Mini KB will head further west to cover the invasion of Java.

Next operation will take Jolo and TawiTawi. Mini KB is arriving at Palau in a few days to support this operation. All operations will be centered on 4 main bases: Saigon, Palau, Kwajalein and Truk.

Using very variable reinforcements has hurt me some. I won't get fresh Zero squadrons for almost 4 months. This means I need to spend lots of production and PP's in order to have sufficient fighter cover for my operations.

Saigon Area
Alor Star should fall with Kuantan following soon after. If I can get into Singapore by Christmas, I feel good about taking it by January 1. This would be of great benefit to the Burma operations.

Troops are preparing for the Borneo oil fields at Taan. They'll move out when Jolo is up and running in support.

Palau Area
Big supply convoy heading to Palau as major operations in DEI will begin here in a couple weeks. Zeros and Betties have moved into Davao.

The Jolo operation is heading past Davao to the south. Mini KB will hit Menado in passing if anything is there. An entire aviation regiment will head to Jolo as this will be a primary base for Borneo operational support. My BB TF following Mini-KB will make a bombardment run down to Tarakan. Like to crunch some DO's if I can there.

China Area
Will see how air operations happen this turn since I reduced my fighter altitude. Perhaps I can hurt the bombing P40's. AA unit is moving to Changsha.

Hengchow is going to be a major battle. He has numerous units in the area. I will have to count on artillery for bombardment disruption as I don't have much effective air.

Kwajalein
Nauru fleet is off. Tarawa fleet is loading. Shifted some H6K4's around to check for lurking CV's. Have a nasty feeling about them.

Some subs with planes are going to recon major South Pacific bases to see if they show up anywhere. Some will recon PH soon as well.

Hope my production notes were some help. Very few opponents will sortie PH on day 1 even when given the chance to. Better to leave them in port where they have a chance of survival.

By the end of Dec, you will be cranking out 204 Zeros per month if you made my exact changes. You should have every Claude group upgraded by the end of Jan at that rate. Have no worries about the reinforcement schedule for air groups. Once you get all those Claudes upgraded to Zeros, you will have more than enough fighter groups.

BEWARE the dreaded Hurricane in Lemurs mod. The Zero can take it, but you will take heavy losses in a 1-1 fight with them. Keep all Army fighters away from Hurricanes. Once you spot Hurricanes in numbers, start hitting their base heavily. If they are on the coast, every BB you have should head there and bombard the crap out of them.

Strange. I am playing an early version of Lemurs! where Oscars are kicking Hurricane butt. Perhaps the relevant changes were not in that version?

They were very helpful. I did halt and no repair the -rd factories to free up some supply for other changes. All pools are doing well except supply, but that major drain should stop in a month or so. The biggest booboo I made was farking my IJN pilot pool. I accidently set my recons and FP to accept replacements and they drained me bad. I caught it the next turn, but they had all gotten planes by then, and once the planes arrive, there's no stopping the great sucking noise from the pool.

I'll have to do some shenanigans with my LBA Kate squadrons to get the KB back up to reasonable levels of torp bombers. I lost more than normal because the ships were at sea rather than in port (I assume). I did sink six BB's with them and subs, so it was worth it points-wise.

Haven't met Hurries yet, but I'll keep a close eye on them. Thanks for the tip.

I leave all r&d on, and I my supply in Japan will drop real low in mid January, the begin to climb again rapidly. Febuary is my supply crunch, when I am replacing supply at all my forward HQ bases. Palau and Truk for example. But I also move a bunch out on turn 1 to different invasion sites. Average of 10,000 supply per invasion site. Both to give me fast supply and to kick start any repairs to res/oil. The TF's hover off the beach until the base is secured and if needed the supply convoy moves in, if it is not needed the convoy moves somewhere else or unload it depending on what is needed.

For my invasion of Kendari, I will have 3 convoys of 28,000 supply standing by to kick start repairs. 1 convoy will always land and unload regardless. I figure on my turn 1 that I have well over 350,000 supply loaded on different convoys at sea ready for unloading.[X(]

And that does not include any supply loaded with my invasion forces. Just resupply convoys.

No problem with the tip. Any questions you may have, feel free to post them here or pm me with them. Besides Lemur, I probably know his mod better than anyone. His mod will so corrupt you, that you will get a headache just looking at a stock scenario 15.
