US Flag incorrect!

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

US Flag incorrect!

Post by Dogfish »

Hey All:

I'm probably not the first to notice this, but if not, with V7.1 due soon, why isn't it fixed.

Probably due to the post 9/11 patriotism, and flags being all over everthing, I notived that the flag in SPWAW is more indicative of the current 50 star US Flag, and not the WW2 48 star flag.

The flag in the game (at least on VH's) has a field of stars where the columns line up every other (alternating) row.

The WW2 48 star flag, had a field of stars that had columns that lined up in every row. The 48 stars were a 6X8 "MATRIX".

In the interest of being historically correct, and to show the proper respect to the US veterans of WW2 then the US flag should be changed.
When you're wounded and left
on Afghanistan's plains,
And the women come out
to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle
and blow out your brains
An' go to your Gawd like a soldier.

That is sharp eyes, indeed it is. I never noticed it before and so far as I know neither has anyone else. The man is absolutely correct. Would it be a big deal to rework the US flag icons(s)?

Ought to be done, I think.

Hey All:

Thanks for the feedback on whether this had been pointed out before. I don't know if Matrix will choose to do anything more with SPWAW or not.

I'll put it on my list of things to do. I think it would be better if Matrix included the updated SHP file with a release. I understand that problems occur in PBEM with different files among players.

Now,... tell me more about my eyes...

on Afghanistan's plains,
And the women come out
to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle
and blow out your brains
An' go to your Gawd like a soldier.

ROFL

I think the guys here at the office think I am nuts. It took me a half hour to explain why there was hysterical laughter echoing from my cubicle.

So here we see, knowledge increases the pain. But ok, of course it should be correct

Hey All:

I saw an opening and took my shot... thought it would brighten up a dull forum. Didn't quite expect the reactions.

Monitors do need to be cleaned however, and coffee is easier than pizza... and having to explain to coworkers about laughter is probably easier than discussing the current OOB changes.

Anyway, I've got a good looking 48 star that I'll replace the 50 with... probably over the weekend.

Questions are:

1) Does Matrix want an updated flag shp file for the next release?

2) Does Matrix prefer to do it themselves, because of testing or whatever or would they like a copy when I make the change?

3) If Matrix wants a copy of mine... who do I send it to?

I know everyone at Matrix is very busy... and now moreso than usual, so I posted the questions here. It's on topic, and I really don't know who is responsible for for what anymore.

GMENFAN is our "trait d'union" with Matrix on this Forum at the moment, so maybe he could let them be aware abt yr proposal..

Ok it's been upchanneled, not sure if Paul or others knew or not. I posted in the OOB forum because that is where Paul is hanging, with the final OOB's due out soon.

Ok here is the reply I just received.
"The flag icon only has 25 stars...whether they "give the correct impression" of 48 or 50 is frankly off my radar screen right now...
I'm sure someone will try to "fix it" but c'mon guys, do you really want us spending time on cosmetic fleas of this minor nature...??" I'm sure if someone wants to tackle it and repair it would greatly appreciated.

If someone sends a correcteed .shp file I'll be glad to throw it in...but this opens the door to offending some other country whose flag idosyncrasies dd not traslate well to the pixelation available...and it doesn;t get fixed.

7.1 will pretty much mark the disengagement of Matrix from SP:WaW at least until we have a couple CL modules out and its standing on its own two feet. By then hopefully SP:WaW will be pretty much obsolete

We welcome continued support from fans, but we learned our lesson trying to "officially sanction" folks who want to work on their own.

Anyone:

I took a quick look at the shp files, and it appears that the files I have to change are:

In the Iron Cross Folder:
Batbut.shp
Battle.shp
Icon0016.shp
Icon0061.shp

The same 4 in the Swastika Folder

And copy those (Swastika to the defaults)

Can someone please confirm this. I don't want to jerk Paul around by not completing the job the first time.

Thanks
