The rule I found says "non-Dutch air units destroyed on the ground when their base is captured will return to the game as a reinforcement after 360 days." (15.2) Whether this applies to air units destroyed by any means or is specific to this one case, I couldn't say. If they do come back I would presume the delay would be 360 days. Perhaps rroberson would take a peek at his air unit arrival schedule and enlighten us...?[;)]
Right paragraph, but you stopped reading too soon [:D] Last sentence is "Allied air units that are sunk while on a ship and that are not part of that ship's normal air group complement will return to the game as a reinforcement after 120 days."

Of course, the manual is not always right...
WHAT?! You mean that I have to read the whole thing? Turn the page and all?! WTF.....[;)]
CV Group 1 got off only a single air strike today consisting of a single Kate and 16 escorting zeros [:D] It attacked a lone DD and missed... Rest of the spotted TFs were covered in bad weather [:@]
One of my subs finally made it to Akyab and put a torp into the lone ASW asset I have seen there... a PG.. The torp exploded raining pieces of the PG all over the port.
I used Nells based at Truk to raid Port Moresby's airfield incase Rob was trying to build anything up.. My Nells took a beating from AA fire (no CAP present) - only 1 Nell lost, but 8 or so damaged. I destroyed a single Hudson I on the ground along with 14 men. I got 3 airbase and 19 runway hits. Not much damage and the fatigue really built up from such a long haul... Will take a few days of rest to get it back to 0.
My bombardments at Clark and Mnilla were weak with only 45 and 13 casaulties respectively. I did a little better at Hengchow, causing 90. I grew tired of trying to encircle the 1st Burma Brigade and simply attacked.. I lost 4 men and a gun, while causing nearly 400 casualties to the enemy and forcing them to retreat. They now lie 1 hex NE of Rangoon and I will pursue them soon.
My sub commandoes have landed on Funafuti Island and captured it against no opposition. This gives me control of all 3 islands south of Tarawa and I plan on using them as simple coastwatcher places and perhaps bases for future float planes and sub refueling.
The day starts off with one of my ASW TFs attacking an allied sub and hitting it with 2 depth charges.. The sub doesn't sink, but will definately need some repairs.
CV Group 1 moves to the east a bit and low and behold more damn weather over the allied TFs spotted... Is Rob controlling the weather from that mysterious device in Alice Springs ??? It sure seems like it... As my strikes sit idle, Rob launches a strike from Broome against the baby CV TF... Due to both TFs being in the same hex, they enjoy a combined CAP of 5 Claudes and 29 zeros... A total of 4 Brewsters and 3 Hudson Is attack.
My CAP kills 1 Brewster and 1 Hudson. The two Hudson approach and attack CVE Hosho. AA fire kills one Hudson before they drop and the second one after they drop.. Luckily all bombs missed.
Finally in the PM phase the weather clears over one allied TF and CV Group 1 launches 8 zeros, 38 Vals and 44 Kates against 1 CL... CL Durban takes 5 bomb hits and quickly explodes... Most of my Kates did not even launch as the ship was already sunk - got the 'target not found' response. BTW... I am now getting my Vals to attack ships in groups of 8 or 9 instead of 4. I have them set at 13000 feet altitude (or higher) and its causing them to attack in groups of 9 instead of 4 - much better... I'm thinking of setting my Kates up like that as well..
In china I got 2 chinese sub units to surrender. The 80th Chinese Corps / C surrendered with over 3500 men and 9 guns. Also the 79th Chinese Corps / C surrenders with nearly 1500 men and 5 guns. I am going much better in surrounding units and getting them to surrender now with the advant of ZOCs... Makes it easier to box them in and not have to chase them all over the wilderness.
Arty attacks on Clark and Manilla are once again disappointing - only 52 and 27 losses respectively. Hengchow is also disappointing as only 33 enemy are killed. I landed an NLF on Taytay last turn and they captured it this turn against no opposition. I am going to use this NLF to pick off some of the unoccupied PI bases now that the waters around there seem safe - and it seems there are no enemy aircraft operating in the PI anymore.
I landed some more sub commandoes at Pamakasan (Sumatra) and learned that there are enemy troops there [X(] I figured it was another empty base... But no... An allied base force and I think a garrison BN of dutch troops sit there.. Luckily the landing only triggered an allied arty strike and I plan on picking them right back up and retreating as quickly as I can. Its only a couple squads, but why lose them if I don't have to.
Well another slow day... well not super slow, but slow enough I guess...
The day starts with air raids on Singapore to damage facilities so Rob has trouble building up the fort level... My raid of 27 Anns was mauled by AA fire... Eleven of the 27 planes were shot down and a couple damaged... Is the AA at Singapore that heavy that my Anns get mauled ? Luckily I had the unit on Accept replacements beforehand and I got replacements to refill the unit... but it'll take a while for their morale to recover...
I had a medium air raid on Clark for the same purpose - to slow down construction of forts. This raid was 9 Vals and 23 Nells from nearby Laoag airfield. About 6 planes were damaged, but they landed 11 airbase, 2 airbase supply and 24 runway hits... so definately worth the damaged planes...
The low part of the day came when Rob launched some damn B-17s at Truk.. The first wave merely hit the port and inflicted no damage, but the second wave of 10 attacked ships in port. They damaged 4 ships, two of them critically - an AS, AP, ML and a MSW. One bomb hit each according to reports - 3 of the ships were ablaze as the planes left.. I checked my CAP and found out I only had a single chutai of zeros there and they were on training... I figure they were once Claudes and got upgraded, but never assigned a mission.. So they went to Kwajelein and I got the sentai of zeros from there... They were imediately set to CAP... My AA at Truk shot down 1 B-17 and damaged 4 others.
Rob attempted to bomb my men laying siege to Hengchow again. The first wave was chinese bombers, along with some chinese fighters and a couple AVG fighters.. My CAP over the base killed both AVG planes and mauled the chinese fighters and bombers - killing 4 of each.
The next wave was 6 Hudson Is, 7 Beaufort V-IXs, 9 B-17Es, 7 Blenheim Is all escorted by 24 P-40Bs of the AVG.. My 5 zeros did great.. shooting down several P-40s but unable to engage the bombers... Nearly 90 IJA soldiers were killed or wounded in the attack... Looks like Rob is really trying to bomb me out of Hengchow, so I either need to provide more CAP over the base... or strike at the airfields he is using... What do you guys think ?
CV Group 1 finally broke clear of the bad weather and found several targets still in the area. While her bombers were off chasing allied ships, more allied planes came in from Broome.. A total of 4 Brewsters, 4 P-35s and 2 Hudson Is found the TFs... Unfortunately for them they ran right into 5 claudes and 39 zeros on CAP.. The CAP engaged and shot down all enemy planes... all 10 were splashed [:D]
My return strikes found 2 TFs and hit them both.. The first TF was found by 17 Vals and 18 Kates.. Ony 2 bombs and 1 torpedo hit the DD Pillsbury, but thats because 'No target found' was reported by most of the strike, and the DD sunk soon after... A second strike of 21 Vals and 18 Kates found 2 allied DDs limping to Broome... DD Electra took 1 bomb and 2 torps, whereas DD Van Nes took 3 bombs and 3 torps before they both sunk.
My arty strikes on Clark faired better causing nearly 150 losses.. Although the strikes on Manilla and Hengchow were not so good - only 30 losses at both. I landed some more sub commandos on Wallis Island capturing it unopposed.. This gives me a good stab into the south pacific with the islands - although none of them have any garrison on them at all...
I just got new reinforcements today.. roughly a dozen new land units, including 8 or 9 combat units, along with 2 HQs... The good news is that all of the units came into play either at half strength or better.... several of the SNLF units came in at 179% strength, so they will be sent to the front as soon as I decide where to send them...
The day starts off with a surprise night air raid on Truk's port... I was suprised that the B-17s would fly again so soon, but oh well.. Only 3 made the flight and reportedily all 3 were damaged... They bombed port and managed to hit a ML with a single bomb. Luckily the ML didn't sink, but is badly damaged... and burning...
In response IJN ASW TFs locate and attack several allied subs... Dutch sub K-18 suffered two depth charge hits from a destroyer ASW TF. Also, US Sub Pollack suffered two hits as well from an PC/PG mixed ASW TF... Neither sub sunk, but I believe they are both damaged and will be forced to retreat...
The IJA air force in china struck at Hengchow trying to crater the runway and cause enough damage so Rob has to waste supplies and more importantly time in repairing them instead of building new forts. It mostly worked. Nearly 50 bombers, escorted by 27 fighters, struck Hengchow's airfield. 1 plane was lost from AA and another one damaged. My fighters shot down a single P-40B on CAP.. My bombers caught a chinese bomber on the airfield and destroyedit, as well as inflicting the following hit... 4 airbase, 8airbase supply and 30 runway.. It should take a while for his engineers to fix that.
Rob's chinese airforce then attempted to bomb my lead divisions at Hengchow and ran right into my LR CAP over the base. My 5 zeros shot down 4-6 chinses fighters and 1 bomber. The rest survived and caused 5 IJA losses. Unfortunately that wasn't the only bombing raid on my troops at Hengchow... the damn British struck too... My 5 zeros survived the aerial battle shooting down 2 more P-40B (AVG members). AA fire from the ground claimed several damaged bombers, but nothing else was shot down. Nearly 40 casualties were reported... The best thing is that my CAP also intercepted what I must take as either rob flying in supplies or men and shot down 2 more chinese bombers.
In a raid on some chinese troops my 8 escorting zeros shot down all 4 P-40Es on CAP alowing the 25 Sallies to cause over 20 enemy casualties.
While flying a sweep mission, 34 Oscars engaged 6 Buffalos and 1 P-40B north of Rangoon. In the dogfight, no Oscars were damaged, yet they shot down 5 of the 6 Buffalos and damaged the last one... It seems the tied is turned and my Oscars are finally performing good against the british fighters in Burma. I just wonder how long it will last... and more importantly, when does the RAF get better fighters...
Growing a little impatient I ordered a deliberate attack on Clark Field. 126,000 IJA troops attacked against the 36,000 enemy defenders. Unfortunately the fort is a level 4 (they reduced it 1 level in this attack) and I suffered over 2600 losses compared to the 270 enemy losses.... almost 10:1 in their favor... not a good fight. Not sure whether I should continue to attack in hopes of continual lowering of the forts and eventually surviving the troops into Bataan or wait and use more ary and aerial attacks to soften them up.
My arty attack at Hengchow claims over a 100 chinese troops..
North of Hanoi, Rob tries an attack against my armored recon regiment with what appears to be a supply starved portion of a chinese corps.. The chinese attacked and were driven back easily by my tanks... No IJA losses were reported, yet over 250 chinese were...
Last turn I ordered CV Group 1 to the north and most of her air groups to stand down for a day of rest. Both my TFs are low on fuel and they are siphoning fuel from the cruisers accompanying the TFs... I am ordering both TFs within 240 miles of Broome and will launch another raid on the port trying to sink the 5 or 6 CLs I have crippled in the port... If I leave now, they will quickly flee to the south and repairs... After the air strike I will most likely pull back and head for Kendari and some refuelling...

If you reduced the fort from a 4 to a 3, I'd call that a good attack. With the odds that much in your favor, I'd say you are close to taking Clark. You have to expect casualties. The important thing is, what was your before and after % of disablement, disruption and fatigue? As long as I wasn't getting whacked too badly in those stats, I'd keep attacking. Don't give him a break unless you have to. Don't forget, he's hurting too. Next time do you attack, hit him that turn with 50 or so Sallys on Ground Support.... On your arty bombardment as well, don't think in terms of the number of casualties. The main result of bombardment is disabling squads just for that turn so they don't participate in combat. The important thing is to bombard and assault in the same turn.

I didn't notice the disruption or fatigue levels before I attacked so I can't honestly answer that. I am using arty bombardment until my air groups at Laoag regain some morale and are able to fly some combat missions agains... Then I'll take your advice and attack until I win.... I am going to make sure I have some engineers with the attackers and if not try to get an Eng Rgt into the battle as soon as possible - either via boat or air transport.
The day starts off with a fighter sweep over Taung Gyi in Burma. My 21 zeros sweep in and engage the 15 P-40Es on CAP. In the end, 1 zero is shot down along with 3 P-40s... I'll take those odds... My second fighter sweep (containing Oscars) arrives a moment later to clear skies - no CAP... Which is good, cause another moment goes by and 59 Sallies arrive over the base and attack the airfield. I catch 1 P-40 on the ground and inflict only 1 airbase supply hit and 3 runway hits... What a crappy bombing run...
I also strike at Rabaul with Nells from Truk... 48 Nells attack, with 7-8 catching damage from flak and only manage to hit the runway 3 times... Another crappy attack.
CV Group 1 returns withing range of Broome and launches.. 21 zeros, 38 Vals and 52 Kates head against Broome's port.. Enemy CAP consisted of 3 fighters only (P-40B, P-35A and a Brewster). My fighters shoot down the P-40 and the Brewster while the P-35 flees. In the bombing attacks 2 Vals are shot down, another 2 damaged, along with 4 Kates.. Not bad losses.... My bombers hit a total of 8 ships, including 5 CLs, 1 DD, 1 AK and a MSW - all of which are left burning but the AK. Only four Kates attempt to use torpedoes and only one of those hits - CL Mauritius. Several 800 kg bombs hit ships along with a couple 250 kgers.. In the end, CL Tromp and DD Isis sink in port at end of turn [:D]
In retaliation, Derby launches an air strike on 1 Martin 139 bomber.. My CAP intercepts it and shoots it down easily.
In Malaya, 27 Sonia bomb the 109th RAF base force in preparation of it being wiped out at Mersing. Only 6 casualties, but the disruption factor is more important. A few moments later a brigade attacks the base achieveing 102:1 odds and capturing over 1300 RAF men and the base. Now only Singapore stands unconquered in Malaya - and my troops are on the march there.
My arty strikes at Manilla cause 60 enemy losses, whereas the strikes at Hengchow cause 170 losses.
Sub commandoes land at Namlea and capture the base against no opposition.
Next turn CV Group 3 will reach Kwajalein and spend some time gathering replacement aircraft and pilots. I am not sure where to send them next. I will have to look at the accumulated sys damage and decide if they need a quick trip to the body & fender shop or not. I have units preparing for the assault of Canton and Palmyra Islands and plan on using CV Group 3 to support those attacks when the troops are ready.
Also, Rob should have another CV now - Yorktown I think... bringing his total to 4. I believe he has 2 of them currently in the SW Pacific around Oz somewhere and the 3rd is probably still in Diego... Now that he has another CV he might bring them out to play, so I have to begin watching for such a move and be ready to pounce if I spot them.
The day starts off with a bunch of ASW attacks on both sides but nothing being damaged at all. Although a dutch sub (K-18) sunk from previous damage.
As the air phase starts low and behold Rob is being creative again. All of a sudden 6 B-17Es appear in the skies over Pescadores and bomb the port. They come in at 1000 feet and successfully hit 3 ships in port - all merchies - 1 AP, 1 AK and 1 TK. The AK and AP are actually hurt and set on fire, whereas the TK took like 5 or 6 damage only and no fires. My AA supposedly damaged 3 B-17s during the attack which makes no sense to me.. I had 4 or 5 complete AA units sitting there waiting for me to send them somewhere more usefull... 6 B-17s coming in at 1000 feet during the day should have been mauled by AA fire.... I know B-17s are tough, but I should have gotten at least 1 shot down if not more...
Another major air raid by my on Hengchow's airfield. Only 7 allied fighters were providing CAP (1 RAF P-40B and 6 Chinese crappy I-153Cs). I shot down 3 of the I-153s and only lost 2 Anns to CAP / AA fire. I damaged the runway some more (4 airbase, 6 airbase supply and 16 runway hits). I plan on keeping this up for a bit until I go back to attacking - then my air force will switch to hitting ground targets in support of my attacks.
My baby CV TF struck once more at Broome (only CVs that had reliable morale in the air groups). 6 zeros and 15 Kates attacked the port, scoring only a single bomb hit on a CL. 1 Kate was shot down and 2 more damaged in the raid. Nothing was sunk [:@]
CV Group 1 was further away providing LR CAP over the baby CVs and a fighter sweep of Broome. The fighters struck after the air raid (odd huh ??) but in exchange for no zeros lost or damaged, they shot down 3 allied fighters (1 Brewster, 1 P-35 and 1 P-40) - this was the entire CAP over Broome.
My arty bombardments of Manilla and Hengchow proved effective - 174 and 93 enemy soldiers lost respectively.
The day started off with another large japanese air raid of Hengchow airfields. Only 3 chinese fighters were in the air as CAP and all 3 were shot down by my escorts allowing the 50+ bombers to hit their targets... The airbase was hit causing 8 airbase, 2 supply and 12 runway hits.
Elsewhere in china, Sallies from Hanoi bombed the resource centers in Kunming, claiming 3 hits at a loss of 1 plane. Good deal.
I have several AKs unloading fuel at a small island base in the Timor Sea so my CV escorts can stop and tank up some to make it back to Kendari. UNfortunately 4 Brewsters attacked one of the AKs and actually managed to hit it with a bomb. The damage is not critical, but it will need yard time before it is back to full capacity.
My arty attack on Manilla was weak this turn, only claiming 59 enemy losses... To make up for it the arty attack on Hengchow was massive - claiming 414 enemy losses.
In Mindanao, my forces have caught up with the fleeing PA units at Cagayan and attacked. They captured the base and forced the units to retreat once more to Butuan. 3 base forces (I think it was 3) and a depleted PA Div wait for me at Butuan now. Losses on both sides were fairly even.
My NLF force captured Puerto Princesa against no opposition. They will be given a day or so of rest and then loaded up and shipped to Cagayan to help in the operation to finish off enemy presence on the island.
An enemy PBY (I think) located and attack I-1 180 miles from PH damaging it. The sub is ordered to return to Kwajalein for makeshift repairs for flooding, then it will return to Japan for actual repairs.
I got some intel of ships sitting in Soerbaja harbor again, so I dispatched two sentais of Nells (with zeros for escort) to hit it.. Luckily they actually did attack the ships, hitting an enemy sub with 3 800 kg bombs and an allied AK with another one. The sub (O24) sunk.
CV Group 1 made it near one of my base islands in the Timor Sea only to run into a group of 4 PT boats that have been hanging out at Koepang recently. In a quick surface action at 5000 yards, the PTs opened fire with torps on an IJN DD and missed... Two of my DDs returned fire, sinking a PT and barely hurting another. Luckily nothing in my TF was scratched.
On the 17th, an IJN sub off the west coast ran into a US convoy and put a fish into an AK damaging it... Dozens of soldiers fell out of the hole and several bodies were left floating... apparently this TF is carrying troops... I will try to catch it and continue to harrass it.
On the coast of Seattle (about 180 miles off the coast) a US ASW TF luckily got up with one of my subs and hit it with 4 depth charges sinking it. Another IJN sub sitting off the port of Akyab was attacked by 3 RN ships (2 PGs and a DD) and severely damaged. It is unknown if the ship will make it to port...
My sub commandoes strike again capturing Sag Sag on the Bismark Arch.
It starts out poorly with that damn RN ASW TF moving into Akyab harbor and attacking another IJN Sub stationed there. The sub is minorly damaged (4 sys / 21 flt) and is ordered to port to repair the flt damage.
An IJN sub happens upon an Oz CL near Gili Gili and misses it with several torps. [:@]
A fighter sweep on Pagan (Burma) pits 23 zeroes against 1 Hurricane... This is the first new fighter I have encountered and I only got a quick glimpse of it as my zeros shot it down quickly.
Seemingly in retaliation for the attacks and damaging of 2 IJN subs, LR naval bombers from Bangkok located the RN ASW TF and attacked. 11 Nells and 18 Betties converged on the small TF. Enemy AA fire claimed a single Nell but did not save the TF.. All 3 ships were hit with torpedoes and all quickly sank [:D] That will teach Rob to attack my subs in Burmese waters [:)]
My arty attack on Clark Field was very successful and caused 300 enemy losses.
In a major attack at Hengchow,in china, 4+ divisions of IJA veteran troops assaulted the chinese stronghold. IJA engineers reduced the last fort level and over 78,000 japanese troops stormed the city... The enemy troops attempted to fight back but were disrupted from the constant arty and air strikes... After a day of combat Hengchow was in the hands of the IJA and 51,674 chinese POWs were taken... along with 310 guns... Roughly 7 chinese corps have been eliminated at this base. This is a major blow to Rob.. With the units I have already eliminated and those that are trapped and will be eliminated soon this will be over 10 chinese corps wiped out.. I know he will get them back, but in a very weakened position and he'll be unable to supply them properly to get them to fill out.
With Hengchow falling, I now have complete control of the rail in china. I still need to clear a few corps off the rail near Hanoi, but they are just sitting there and not attacking - just cutting off the flow of supplies to and from Hanoi... Hanoi is basically out of oil so its HI is sitting idle.. I am loading up a TF of oil and resources in Sasebo that will stop at Formosa - dropping off some oil and resources and then will make its way to Hanoi bringing some important oil there.
In Luzon I am bombing Manilla heavily with over 100 bombers and committing the roughly 2 divisions of troops there to a Shock Attack in an attempt to break the stalemate in the city. A newly arrive regiment of engineers is tasked with weakening the city's defenses during the assault.... with a little luck I will take the city and capture the 4 or 5 units there - only 1 combat unit - rest are Base Forces I believe. Possibly a HQ too... not sure.
I am contemplating a bold move concerning Clark and Bataan. I am thinking of performing a paradrop into Bataan when Clark is about to fall, thus cutting off all retreat from the base - and eliminating 75% of the troops left on Luzon. The paratroopers can only hold for a turn or two (IF Rob counter attacks) and it is a risky proposition.. What do you guys think ?

I expect that would work, but if you are tossing in just one of those parachute battalions because you know your ZOC will block his retreat, and have no hope of the airborne attack actually succeeding, it's gamey IMHO. I know my PBEM foe would be p1ssed if I did this....course he's a real crank[;)]. Personally, I would only do this if I could put a brigade-sized force in the hex (through parachute and amphib combined). Course I'm a crank too.
For that matter, you could just march someone in from San Marcelino. That's about the only sort of thing those crappy tank battalions are good for.

I agree it sounds very gamey and I'd expect most honorable players wouldn't do it. If you did the drop weeks in advance and it held on its own, then sure, but timing it for a single turn’s zoc is pretty bad in my opinion.
I wouldn't know why you couldn't; do an F6, it's a green hexside, there's just not a road. We IJ don't need no stinking roads![8D]
Believe me I have tried to march from San Marcelino to Bataan and you can't.. Don't remember if it simply says NO... or it accepts the movement via Clark. With some fixes in 1.4 it might now be possible.
Two more slow days in the war... Rob and I did several turns yesterday so I'm gonna catch up with some basic reports for the last 2 days.
19 Jan
My ASW efforts pay off as a Dutch sub is sunk.. An AP is damaged near PH by an sub and 30 soldiers are killed.. Unfortunatly attempts to track the TF have not proved successful.. I am sure the TF is full of men too [:@]
20 Jan
Not much happening again beyond the normal.. I did capture Zamboanga (Mindanao) which leaves only Butuan left on Mindanao to the allies and thats where his Mindanao troops are hiding - 3 Base Forces (I think) and a PA Division.
