Upgrading to 1.21 1.30 and 1.4

I'm going to upgrade my version to 1.4 from v.1.2.
Is there anything special i must do to success?
I don't want to loose my save files as well as the pbem file.

Upgrade 1 step at a time and load each save then run 1 turn and save them out.

Then move on to the next version.

I saw this after I loaded 1.4? I previously uploaded 1.3 but didn't run a turn as I was waiting for some mod updates first. Will not running a turn and saving it screw up the works?
