Tactical Tips?

Post by rhondabrwn »

Anyone have any tips on GoT battle tactics? Effectiveness of different formations and unit commands - placement of leaders and so forth?

Haven't played enough to have much of an opinion yet but there are good unit descriptions included in the manual. It identifies which units do well/poorly in what terrain and against other units.

Still haven't read the manual, but my prime battle plan is putting light cavalry on the flanks set to "envelope" with the main line on "Long Hold" and then when the flankers are in position... I hit the special option CHARGE button and then watch as the trap is sprung. Makes me feel like Hannibal at the Battle of Cannae

I haven't played enough to really confirm whether such a tactic works better than just doing a straightforward charge. The mechanics of it works though.

One thing I have noticed is heavy infantry is king of the land battles. When you're asked wether to go to auto or manual battle the odds are always greatly in favor of the hvy inf. You can win a lot of those battles with your cavalry but you need to do it manually. I have won 1-3 and 1-4 odds this way quite a few times.
Cavalry is pretty ineffective for defense of cities in this regard too. Once again you need to go to manual battles to win.
When attacking a walled city with Greek fire always charge. Most of the Greek fire will miss you this way.
Generals are nice but expensive.Personally I prefer another heavy infantry unit.
For some reason in sea battles it has been my experience that hvy inf doesn't do as well as light inf and skirmishers. This may just be coincidence but I seem to have btter luck with the light troops at sea.

I haven't tried it yet but can you form an army of peasant, take them to a city where you need more population and disband the peasant army and get more citizens for the city?

After getting shellacked by Persians ([:@]) in sea battles, i resorted to more closely reading the manual. it says heavy inf and cav just are worthless, but light inf and archers are ideal for sea battles. so then I made a 6 Levy fleet and pretty much won vast majority against selfsame Persians. [:D]

Oh yeah, you can shift workers around by creating peasant units and disbanding them in other cities
