The poll is just to help me decide whether to take screenshots for the COTA manual using Picture symbols or NATO symbols [:)].

Now, I understand.

Maybe the best is to take example on the manuals from the two previous games (RDoA and HttR). The manuals were written by a certain Dave O'Connor (whoever he is [;)]) and all screenshots are with picture symbols.

I hope this helps [:D]

I prefer the symbols over the pics, but keep the pics in as it makes it easier to bring new blood into the wargaming world.

With pics and order delays off, this game can be quickly learned by people with no military skills. That is a rare statement to be able to make for a wargame. [;)]

I prefer the Nato symbols, but I use the pictures simply because of the immediate feedback they give as to deployment so I don't have to interrupt my screen fixation by looking left to the info area.
The picture symbols don't give any information about deployment - to see deployment you have to press F5 and it then gets shown in the top right corner of the icon (the 'info box').

Where the picture symbols do give more information is that they differentiate between mortars and field or infantry guns, and between heavy and light flak units. Like the NATO symbols they differentiate between motorised, mechanised, glider, para and plain foot infantry but apart from that, they don't give any information about mobility (foot vs motorised/tracked). The picture symbols also don't differentiate between infantry and unarmoured cavalry/recce units although in game terms there's really not much difference between them anyway.

I used to play with military style symbol, but had difficulty to differ mortar from artillery proper, a difficulty I do not experience using the picture-style symbols

I play using the NATO-style symbols because that's what I'm used to. However, I'm glad the option to use symbols is there.

NATO, because they are more realistic to use than the picture symbols and give a more military feel to the game

First post as a HttR player.

I play nato symbols all the time.

But I have a gripe about the equipment symbols in the Equipment window to the side. Why use a truck symbol for an armored equipment type? It would be a tremendous improvement to me if these symbols were silhouettes of the actual equipment. Panther silhouette for a MkV Panzer, Sherman Tank for an M4, etc. ... instead of a truck for a tank. ?? (... and sure, I can read the words but graphics really add to immersion )

Any others find this odd?

Thanks

and best regards from an avid bin player

I like the Nato symbols but I think newbies find it easier with silhouettes.
