Strategy Tips

I'd like some help on strategy. A lot of times I play the Grand Campaign games past my completion of a win.(just for funsies)
With the massive empires I control I start losing contol after awhile. How do you all:
1)garrsion troops behind the "front lines"?(How many,what kind,etc)
2)manage(financiallly) more than an army or two for attacking?(I've been hit by the AI with a dozen of more huge armies at once)
3)Do you build forts and or walls in most of you cities?
4)I've never messed with the sliders.How do you all use them or do you leave them on default?
