RE: The Italian Job

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

Not a good turn i'd say.
The chinese at Canton have something i cannot explain: They are so damned stronger than usual! Chagasha has been sourrounded and the final attack has been ordered...hope this won't have any more complications....
At the same time Yenen is under siege.
At Rabaul KB hit hard and now is moving west again to repenish, while mini kb is in place to substitute her . A Bombardment Tf is on its way from Truk....hope this will be enough....Rabaul is costing me too much in terms of lives, fuel and pilots!!![:@]
We're reaching Victoria where the allies are fortifing. At Raeghen my men had to get back.A Bomb attack has been ordered.the problem was that today the bad weather forced my bombers( which were ordered to smash that base) to stay down, so no support was given to the attack.
The Battle for Rangoon has begun. Unluckly i lost the first round, because the zeros didn't want to take off( do not know why) and the oscars could not face the hurricanes and the AVG.
So many ships are getting to Rangoon...it's gonna be hard!

Ok, not a bad turn, but at Burma i can easily see him fortifing and throwing everything he has to defend this area. If Singapore will fall without too many days of siege i can think of a big landing ( with at least 3 divisions) behind his lines,at Chadpur. Now my Carriers are free. I will divide them in 2 groups and use one to support this plan in Indian ocean. But first i have to commit more zeros in the area.
The other carrier group will remain, for the moment, in the South pacific. I'm thinking of raiding his cargo-routes around Christmas island.

The idea of landing behind his defensive line in Burma is growing up. Probably I'll incorporate this op with BELMONT, so that i will be able to screw up his will to defend the area. But all depends on how things go with Singapore

A Base force has landed at lunga and the fortifications are growing up. Wewak is being conquered in 2 days.
I formed 2 KBs at Truk. The bigger one, with Shokaku and Zuikaku will sail towards Saigon and join the battle for Burma, while the other one with Kaga and Soryu will stay in the Solomons to prevent any allied attempt to fortify PM or to attack Lunga.
Operation Belmont is changing. As long as he's trying to biuld up a defensive line between Mandalay and Rangoon i want to try something different. I'm in mind a kind of "Market Garden" Operation. As soon as Singapore falls 3 divs plus some more combat units will load on 3 big TF, supported by 3 Strong Surface TF and KB2.Their obj will be Chandpur. At the same time 5 units will be dropped at Pagan from Bankok and Tavoy, while 3 divisions will attempt to force the enemy's positions at Reaghen and Mouleim.
More details in the screeshot..and more to follow as soon as i collect some more infos

RE: AAR-The Italian Affair--Hoepner vs. mc3744

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

The 27th of december was a sad day for the empire. The allied naval forces surprised my Ambonia invasion TF at night. My surface Tf got surprised and got hit hard.It fought hard in order to keep safe the big TF which was unloading at Ambonia and managed to repulse , after a long night battle, the enemies, but losses are high( 2 dds sunk and Nagara without any more torp left). for a stupid mistake i left "do not unload" to the transport TF, so that it will require at least another day for the troops to go down, and i'm quite sure the allies will coke back tonight:( I'll take the risk, but a CV tf is moving fast from Truk...if i'm a bit lucky in 2 days i'll be in the area to cover this op. This is something that i MUST remind: NEVER, NEVER have an invasion TF without proper escort....

RE: AAR-The Italian Affair--Hoepner vs. mc3744

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

The Burma situation is still changing. He's moved many many troops there.Akyab ,Mandalay and now Pagan are filled with a/c, base forces and garrison troops. I guess he does'nt have anything left in India. In indochina it's been raining for 7 days.Bankok AF is just a swamp and my bombers refuse to take off to bomb Reaghen, where an arty unit and a base force have arrived for him. Now my brave 33rd div cannot stand the fight, so it won't attack anymore but stay on the defence hoping to drain his forces here so the door to Mouleim could be open. 4 ships( a CA, an APD and 2 AP) are spotted at Rangoon bay.55 fighters are waiting for me. I committed 3 27zeros daitai to escort from Bankok...this will be a hard battle!
At Ambonia finally i managed to unload and tomorrow we'll attack. Darwin is becomming aggressive, so i need to biuld up an AF here and defend my positions.
He's surface TF did not appear today! This means that i've hurt him quite a lot yesterday!
Rabaul recieved his first base force(more to come from Japan) and started building his AFs. Same for Lunga.
Tomorrow we'll land north of Palembang with 2 bdes and will move south to take the oilfields

The overall situation is not good anyway. 3200 points vs. 7100. His aviation is almost intact and he managed to fortify Burma area. It will take at least other 2 months to conquer Rangoon and Singapore......and i do not have this long time!

RE: AAR-The Italian Affair--Hoepner vs. mc3744

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

Been in war for 20 days now. My original plans were screwed up and now i'm forced to change the whole operational program. My mistakes at Rabaul force me to commit KB in that area , while i could have used it in DEI and SRA.Worse: they slowed down a lot operations in south pacific.
In Burma-Malaya i got surprised by his moves and got stuck at that damned Victoria base.this slowed down my advance towards Rangoon and gave him time to fortify and fullfil with troops the entire Burma Area. Now i know i won't take neither Rangoon nor Burma without heavy losses or even not take it at all. RAF didn't suffer at all , and i will have to face it in the next days, when my army bombers are all operating in other theatres(PI,Singapore and China). Java is far from being taken, but at least i'm securing Borneo quite a bit.
In China i faced a stiff resistance.Yenen and Chagasha are prooving to be more hard to conquer than what i thought. He's braking the encirclement around Chagasha and so even if i win there his troops will be able to escape and go south. At Canton i lost something like 15,000 men in 4 different deliberate attacks, with very very few losses for him. Now i even outnumber him here.I kept naval bombing his troops, ari bombing and whatever but those 60,000 chinese just do not want to leave my base area.
I've planned this "BELMONT" operation, hoping to find/open an hole in his defensive plan, but i'm becoming a bit less confindent the more we get into the game. I need DEI and SRA and if i divert so many forces into this new indian adventure, i can find myself running out of oil and res very very soon.
Any thoughts readers and mates?

Well...what to say? The Battle for Rangoon has begun, and the skies saw the biggest air battle of the whole war! needless to say that after patch 1.4 things are terribly harder for Nippon!
I lost something like 25 zeros today with their experienced crews, plus a hand of bombers....i sunk 2 big CLs and damaged 2 more, but I Just cannot stand these incredible air losses for a long time...my pool has already run dry[:(]

I forgot to say that the BELMONT-2 operation is still in my filofax. It seems that he's putting everything he has in Rangoon and Burma area, so, probably, i can take him off-guard at Chadpur. Now my KB1 is approaching Ambonia, while KB2 is covering the operations in the solomons. By the time my KB1 arrives at Saigon, Singapore should be under siege and Palembag almost. If, If if...if i manage to conquer PI quite fast i can use the PI invasion force for Java, and leave the Malaya invasion army for Chadupur( when singapore will be in my hands.). The RAF can become a major problem for BELMONT-2. If these are the results vs. AVG & friends i'm forced to think of what will it be when the AVG will support the torpedo and medium RAF bombers. With the IJN pilot pool almost at 0 i must sacrifice some IJA pilots, and so, some oscars to drain down the P40B pool.
I hope...i really hope to take Chagasha by the end of jannuary. If this goal won't be achieved i mus reconsider my whole Strategy for China.

The year closes quite well for the Empire. BELMONT-2 is slowly taking shape in my mind. I find it doable. Finally things are moving in China. Chagasha fell, but , for my own mistake, the enemy forces managed to get out fro the pocket. i'll try to form another envelope in the south.
Sending 4 base forces and 2 costal cun rgts to the south pacific, in order to reinforce my position there, before considering an operation against PM and/or Darwin

The air warfare at Burma is worring me. RAF is growing stronger and i'm not getting the results i was looking for. My inability to stop the shipment of supplies and men from India to Rangoon is costing me the war...

Here it is the current situation.....Japan is far from the results achieved historically...this means that if i do not change the course of the war in the next 3 months i can consider this war lost

This city will be my next chinese target. the problem is that the enire army that took Chagasha , instead of going straight trough the railway, took, for no reason, a trip on the grain field south of Chagasha...this will slow down my advance and my plans...[:(]

This is a result of the new zoc rules. When moving on multi hex routes, the AI plotting routines will assign a path that avoids all zocs, so make sure you only plot 1 hex at a time through enemy zocs.

RE: AAR-The Italian Affair--Hoepner vs. mc3744

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

A day with both the good and the evil for the Empire.
At Canton Island the americans are planning for sure a major offensive, starting from this base. We've been watching for days now big convoys , heavily escorted, unloading men and supplies here. I'll do a recon with a patrol-sub-plane tomorrow, to understand better what's going on here. For the moment i placed 2 naval guards unit and a base force at tarawa.A costal gun rgt ans some more engeneers are on their way to reach Tarawa in no more than a week. i want to force the allies to suffer heavy losses if they decide to take Tarawa first. They ccan take Apanama or Baker to start with, but in these days, when Japan holds the superiority over seas and skies, it probably would be too risky to unload an invasion TF with the threat of KB2 and of the long range torpedo bombers based at Tarawa.
The great news is that my recon planes at lunga have discovered 2 big 15 ships each convoys sailing west just south of lunga. My KB2 that was boringly sailing in those waters took the chance and managed to get close to them....the results have been great! I hope this will slow down the allies for a while.
While Singapore is falling down without any real problem, in China that damned trip in the rice-fields is costing me the entire central front. The Chinese counter-advance at Chagasha, where only 2 little regimets are defending the city...my army is still stuck in the trails and won't be ready to counterattack for at least 4 days[:(][:(][:(][:(] WTH!!!
Tomorrow will begin the attack on Manila. Want to free these 4 divisions as soon as possible for JAVA and BELMONT
