I think they are Aussies - the SMG looks like a 9mm Owen, with the distinctive overhead feeding magazine. I am guessing Owen Mk 1/42, though the stock looks off and it looks like a forward handle has been removed. The Owen went through several revisions, however.

I think it is the Australian Entry in the 1942 Rose Parade in Pasadena.

There was a third guy, who had been sitting on the second guy's shoulders. But they have just passed under that tree, skewering the hat of the third guy and knocking him to the ground.

The second guy is now hanging a warning flag on the low branch so no one else will be injured during the course of the parade. (Australian Rose Parade Entrants have always been know for their courtesy to others).

The 1942 Rose Bowl was won by Oregon State (Oregon State 20, Duke 16).

Indead this is a owen Mark 1/42, Note the colling fins on the barel. Designed by Lt. Evelyn Owen, productionstarted in Newcastle ,New South Wales in November 1940 some 45,000 of all types having been built by sept. 44.
