Another month of War

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

Jannuary has passed, fast as a falling star. The Empire has seen his operations get slower and slower every day of the new year. The allies managed to stop its andvance in Burma and keep on defending hard at Manila. Another week of relax for the units at Manila. After the 2 ordered shock assaults my men divisions are almost gone. Another mistake of mine. I've divided the (101st???) division at Canton in 3 rgts. They will be separately shipped t Manila , then unified back again and help the war efforts here. I know it's risky, cause Canton is under siege, but i just cannot see other reinforcements on the map.
In Burma...well...my only option now is Belmont2. No way to take frontally Rangoon and Reaghen. the point now is that if i go fr belmont2 i cannot go for Java....and that's a hard choice to make.
He reinforced Gili Gili with 3 units yesterday. time to organize a trip down there. Probably the south sea det. will take care of that, when the KB2 will come back from his operations.
Not a satisfying general situation indeed.

Will 3 divisions and 3 brigades will be enough for BELMONT2?....and if BELMONT2 will be ok, the delayed attack at Java will cost me the inability to secure DEI and SRA?..these are the questions...terrible questions....

Raids in the pacific

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

While the struggle for Manila goes on and the Burma front stalls , in the Southeast pacific the Imperial Wings strike back the imperialists, giving the second blow to their communication lines between Autralia and America. It was a clear morning when KB2 got in the right position to attack. The intel provided by the Sub Fleet has been excelent. 3 big convoys have been spotted. 4 waves of bombers and torp bombers took off from the decks of the second Kido Butai. The first convoy was transporting the 51st Aviation Regiment, while the other one was a Tanker TF. Both of them were sailing towards Oz. At Canton Island another convoy has been spotted I decided to risk and to stay another day in these dangerous waters, divinding my striking force in 2 CV TFs (KB2-A and KB2-B). The first one, with Kaga, Soryu and Hosho will chase the Transport TF , which probably will sail back towards Canton. the second one, with Hiryu, Tayho and Soho will go southwards , looking for what remains of the TK TF.
RISKS: First of all Canton Island has size 3 AF. This means that SBDs can be present, with some P-40 i guess. this can be a problem
Second....his CVs! If he's smart enough he has held his CVs as tactical reserve. I'd have kept them around Palmyra for this pourpose. If his Cvs come in my small CVs will be slaughtered....
Does this objective worths these risks? My answer is yes. If i manage to destroy entirely 2 big convoys i can slow down a lot his operations in South Pac, and attract his attention in this area, where i've already gained a quite good defensive perimeter

Duck Hunting in South Pacific

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

The raid in the south east pac goes on. More ships are sunk , but some managed to escape towards Suva. What really gives me the day is the Intel Screen: It reports that 72 aircobra are lost for op losses. Means that they went down with the air-transport AK^_^[:D]
ok, now it's time to go back to Tarawa. My 2 KB2 divisions will join togheder somewhere near Nanoumea atoll( sp?) and will go back to the Marshalls. If nothing bad happens tomorrow i consider this raid a good victory!
At Henchow the chinese defend bitterly enough to stop my advance. I'll keep bombarding and wait for the envelope to close in.
Tomorrow 2 sally daitais will beging the reduction of Batavia AFs.... 4 NLF units will left Palau and sail towards Benjarmais.
A Base force will be shipped from Tokyo towards Kavieng.
tomorrow we'll bomb Gili gili with my BBs

Fire in the Solomons!

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

One of those day that can decide a war.
While 2 sally daitais started the air reduction of Java island, and while another day of bloody bombardments took place in China and at Manila, the main action suddenly blew up in the Solomons. The Allied Carriers finally showed themself! My KB2 A and B were rejoining togheder somewhere next to Nanomea Atoll( south of Tarawa) with a replenish TF and a support surfrace TF( 4CLs and 10 DDs). my Mavis Chutai at lunga had been ordered yesterday to upgrade their planes, so none of the long range patrol a/c were available. I was concentrating my efforts trying to sink some of those bastard subs that were evacuating a base force from New irland. Suddenly my nells on patroll signaled a strong Carrier TF moving west, just in the middle between lunga and gili gili. My zeros were sill set at 5,000 mt. ( i know: i'm an idiot!). My brave bomber crews took off and got directly to the target. 3 enemy Carriers were engaged. My zero escort was too low to fight in the right position, so that the casualities have been terrible! (13 zeros shot down for only 7 wilcats[:@]). He was lucky enough 'cause the Fish that eat the Saratoga did not explode and the Lady Lex took only light damages. BTW now he's been spotted and my KB2 is moving westwards , towards Lunga. He must go back to Oz if he wants to save his skin. Rabaul has been reinforced with 2 more Betty daitais and 27 more zeros. Lunga now has 9 zeros set on CAP, and with my KB2 comming from the east only the retreat route to southwest remains open for his carriers.
Too bad i lost 21 planes today with their priceless crews, but at least i made him eat some dust!...and now i know where the american Carriers are.....

RE: Fire in the Solomons!

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

I'm reconsidering my whole Asian strategy. BELMONT, as originally planned, reveals itself as nothing more than a wet dream. The actual Burma situation, with the strenght of his air forces at Akyab and Mandalay, force me to change it. So Belmont will be cancelled and a new "Code 1" operation will be lounched in one week. This op is a kind of little BELMONT. It figures a mass landing at Rangoon with 3 divisions and 3 brigades, supported by KB1 ( to manage the RN problem) and by TF6 ( with 4 bbs and 6 CAs) which will provinde bombing support. The air cover will be granted by 50 zeros based at Tavoy and , eventually by some daitais of the KB1. 50 long range bombers based at Banok will cover the threat of a counter landing. at The same time 2 divisions, 2 paras units and 1 tank rgt will attack Reaghen, while 1 div and 2 brigades , supported by 2 tank regiments will force enemy's positions at Mouleim. 2 Paras drops will take place at Pagan , to cut the retreat line towards mandalay. The plan is to colose in a pocket 120,000 british soldiers and make the whole enemy front collapse. the main manace is the RAF. It now has 130 bombers between Mandalay and Akyab and 70 fighters.

At the same time i'm planning another raid in the waters between Palmyra and Canton Island. His carriers should be 5 days far from mine, so i'll move my KB2 towards those 5 convoys spotted by my brave subs....another gamble! Yamamoto should be proud of me!:-)

One div has been brought to PI. It will help the final attack on manila.

In China Hengchow and Homan are under siege. Hope they will fall by the end of Feb.

some more considerations

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

while my KB2 is refueling south of Tarawa, and while my boss is not watching me wasting time on the forum[:D], i'm thinking about the scenarios that are opening after 2 months of war.
In the north pacific i've not done anything. That's not because i forgot this theatre, but just 'cause i do not have the means, at the moment, to do anything here. Do not even know if he's reinforcing his positions in the Aleutinas ...
Marcus Island is a weak spot in my eastern defensive perimeter. I've reinforced this island with a strong SNLF unit and a little INJ base force. A Mavins chutai is sitting there. 2500 mines have been laid. At the moment i can't put there anything else.
In the Mariannas, i've sent a base force to every island, in order to start ASAP to build forts and AFs.
In The solomons there are base forces at Wewak,Rabaul, Kavieng, Shortlands, Lunga and Admiralty island. In this theatre i do not have many options.Gili gili,Port Moresby and Lae Lae. At the moment PM has arrived at size 4 AF, which means that i will have to face his bombers. His CVs are still operative, so the threat is laying out there. I put aside the idea of taking PM. The costs in terms of ships, planes and men could be too high. Lae Lae is an interesting base, but cannot hold without committing half of the air forces that i have in the south pac.
So, after these analysis i'll take gili gili. As soon my KB2 will come back to rabaul i'll send an invasion force there.porbably i'll use this base only for naval search duties, so that i can save my zeros and bombers for retaliations. I want to hold lunga. i think i can do it , as long as my KB2 remains intact.
in the marshalls i'm planning to do another raid with KB2 ( now again splitted in A and B). Every merchant ship that i sink means a delay in the american offensive plans. Tarawa reached level 3 AF. Now Vals,Kates,Anns and 27 zeros are base there, with a Mavis Chutai and an ASW Pete chutai. 2 Naval Guards units,1 costal gun rgt, one AA unit, a 90 strenght Base force, one construction Bn. I will eventually commint another NLF unit if needed. If he wants this base he will have to commit at least one division. and a strong CV TF.
The division i took out of Canton will be ready to fight for manila in 7 days i guess. This should speed up the operations in the PI.
Now that Jolo as fallen my invasion forces will go for Benjarmais, to set up the road to Kava. one zero daitai should be enough to give air cover , while a surface TF will watch for any surprise comming from the seas.
in one week "Code 1" op will be launched. If i manage to take rangoon quickly and set up the AFs there i will have the chance to free the KB1. When Manila will fall everything should be ready for Java "Yellow Marble" operation. I plan to close this phase by the end of April with Java and Burma (at least the area south of Mandalay) in my hands.
In China things are going as planned. One more division will appear in 5 days, This unit will move towards Homan, where the pocket has already been closed. The siege will begin in 3 days.
My ship situation is good. Lost only 16 ship for 120 vp. He lost more that 160 ships in 2 months, which is quite good i guess. The navy pilot situation is not good. the pool is empty and my losses are becoming intensive, especially the op ones.
The industry....mmm...i really do not know. I've already sent something like 150,000 of oil and res to Sasebo. I know that's not enough, but these operations are so slow....... BTW i'm organizing this aspect of war as fast as possible. I will be giving an aye on it and point out some details.

Any comments guys? Do you think my plans are too optimistic?

Operation "CODE 1"

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

Time is not on Japan side, so i decide to speed up the preparation for the conquest of Burma.Cannot wait any longer.
5th,18th,56th division have been loaded on 3 big Transport TFs at Singapore. 1 Brigade is with them, with 3 eng. regiments, 5 heavy arty units, 1 HQ, 3 constr.battallions, 1 tank rgt , a base force and 1 AA unit. 5 Surface TF(including 4 BBs and 9 CAs) will escort their travel. One big ASW TF and one MSW TF will follow. KB1(with 305 a/c) will operate as air cover. Destination: Rangoon, where 7,000 men are signaled. At the same time 3 paras units will be dropped at Pagan and 3 divisions + 2 paras units+4 tank units and 2 brigades will force the allied positions at Reaghen and Mouleim. 3 zeros daitais will cover the operations from Tavoy, with 36 high exp oscars. At Bankok i'll put 4 betties and nells daitais. Will it be enough? Will it worth the effort?...only time will tell.

Nothing more to report. Only a good fight over PM, where, as predicted, he moved a strong Air suport. My zeros came all back to Rabaul with 10 kills on their shoulders!
My KB2 is still refuelling around Tarawa. Will move tomorrow towards Canton Island to intercept the enemy's convoys.

The war for Japan is on the edge!

RE: Operation "CODE 1"

Post by PeteG662 »

When you attack try this as it seems to work especially well in fortified positions.....deliberate attack with one of the Japanese engineer regiments and bombard with all the artillery units. Try switching some of your bombers to night attack so you have round the clock bombing of stubborn positions. Multiple attacks during multiple phases will wear the enemy down faster.

FORCE Z came out!

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

Thanks Tillyman, but in our house rules, due to the known bug of night bombing and night interception, we agreed that only specific squadrons could attack during nightime.

Today was a scary day for Japan. I know that sooner or later the RN would have came in. It chose right the worst moment to do it: when all my efforts were directed to organize the Huge CODE 1 operation, shifting ari groups, loading troops and stuff and considering the different options. Well The Z force came out in forces, passing during a storming morning the peninsula of Rangoon. My recon could not take off and i did not notice anything. Luckly at mid time, the clouds went away and the skies over Bankok were clear again.
My betties decided to stay at home , but my brave nells crews took off , followed by the zero escort given in that moment. I have to say that i was expecting a strong LRCAP over the jewels of the RN....but i was wrong[:D] You'll see the results in the report that follows.
Well, this is a hit of luck for me. I do not know how badly they were hit, but even if they manage to get to Tavoy and Bomb my AFs( as i think they wanted to do) they'll find a couple of Sonias and some oscars...nothing more but 900 mines waiting for them to come...and the KB1 is moving towards Rangoon Bay from Singapore. The invasion Fleet will begin its travel tomorrow. The Army sat at Tavoy has been ordered to march towards Mouleim. When the Z force will be away i'll move my zeros (55) to Tavoy, from where they'll give the air cover to the invasion fleet. 70 Transport Planes will be moved at Tavoy and 50 at Bankok. They'll drop 3 units of paras at Pagan to cut the retreat route. BANZAI!

In China( the other hot spot) my pockets are closing ...see map for explanations

In the South-east Pac, the KB2 is moving towards 5 big convoys( each of at least 10 ships)...hopefully his carriers will be quite far from this area....

RE: everything seems quite

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

With "the Code 1" going on there cannot be a lot more oper theatres around. in The Solomons-New Guinea it seems that the key , for the next months, will be Port Moresby. I'm pretty sure he did not ship tons of troops there from Oz. It's a very dangerous place for his ships. The attempt of scamble my situation with a carrier raid ended up with Lex taking 2 fishes. His air forces there will grow up for sure. That's why i need to sweep PM with my zeros untill my advantage is gone. My plan for Gili Gili is taking shape. He brought there 5000 men. probably a base force and some engeneers. As soon as my KB2 comes back from his raids near Canton Island i'll load the south sea det at Truk and will go for gili gili. If he comes out and play with his carriers he will have to face the 200 a/c stationed at Rabaul and the 290 a/c of my KB2. At the same time , with fast transports, i'll take Lae lae. For the moment i'll send only a couple of engeneers there. i'm still thinking that both Lae and Gili gili cannot be held against the daily bombing he's gonna send to these bases. The point is that if those bases have the japanese flag upon them he will be forces, sooner or later , to come and get them if he wants to close my way to Oz. And this is the hypotetical scenario where my combined fleet can inflict the biggest damage to his dreams of power.
If he'll want to go for Lunga, it's gonna be a tough nut to crack. By the end of Feb the Solomons would be quite fortified.
The Marshalls situation is quite good i think. Tarawa has already gained level 3 with the AF and is growing very fast. 9 Kates, 9 Valls, 12 Anns, 27 zeros, 9 Mavis and some petes are stationed there, providing a good( i think) first defensive line. As long as my Carriers remain active in the SouthPac area, every attempt to break my defensive perimeter can be damned costly for the allies.
In 2 days something like 10 units will arrive at Tokyo. Base forces, Naval garrison units and egeneers. All these men will go for Truk and Kwalejen(sp?!?).
in the PI the 3 regiments of the division i dispatched from Canton are now ashore. The will move towards Manila, where they will be built up togheder again. in one week another great attack will be launched! All these divisions will go for Yellow Marble op(Java).
Shipment can be a problem, as long as so many APs are committed for CODE 1. Just hope not to loose too many ships at Rangoon....

So, summarizing , i think my overall situation now is quite good. In China, despite the first big troubles and delays, some great doors are opening. if i manage to encircle and put in the bag these 50 chinese units, i can be quite safe in this theatre for the next months.
The only hurting point is the aerial warfare situation. His bunker tactic prooved to be very effective! i've alreay lost 130 planes more than him and, consiering how strong will be the allied air force in the next six months,i must begin to worry about that.

more details

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

today i've got plenty of time, so i will write down some details to let you better understand the overall situation

CHINA:

HENGCHOW: there are two japanese armies in this city: the 13th and the 11th, each of which with 1500 assault point, for a total of 2990 AP(5 full divisions, 4 brigades,3 div regiments,2 brigades regiments+2 eng regiments+4 arty units+1 arm unit) . The perimeter of the Pocket that is closing in is held by:
-2 regiments of the 13th division+ some engeneers in the railroad junction between Henchow and Changsha
-1 naval guard unit(north west of Hengchow)
-1 SNLF unit( south east of Hengchow)
-1 regiment of the 6th Mix Bde(west of Hengchow)
-1 regiment of the 20th Mix bde( west of Changsha)
-1 regiment of the 6th Div who has just occupied Kweilin

HOMAN: the 1st Army is sieging the city. It consists of 3400 assault points(5 Divs+5 brigades+3 div regiments+2 arty units+1 arm unit)
The perimeter is held by:
-3rd Ind Brigade(north east of Homan)
-1 regiment of 35th div (north west of homan)
-1 reg of 32th div ( on the rr west of Homan)
-1 reg of 2nd ind brigade (south west of homan)

PI:

MANILA: When the 38th Division, which as you remember has been shipped from Canton, will be reunited and will join Manila, the assault Army will consist of:14th Army(5 divisions+4 SNLF+1 Naval Guard Unit+4 arty units+3 arm units+3 eng regiments+ 1 Brigade).
At the moment the 14th Army is under strenght, because of the tough combats that have taken place here in the last 2 months. At the moment the Assault points are 2100, but it should reach the 2500 level as soon as the 38th div joins the party.

JAVA:
The Yellow Marble operation has been planned( see map). the southern part of it is already going on( the units are moving of 5 convoys escorted by a small surface TF). I will soon dispatch some 10 DDs from Singapore to help and support these convoys.
Probably the units involved in the northern area of Java will be those involved in the Manila affair. That's why i need to speed up the opration down there!
it seems that the ABDA moved back to Oz all its air units. Batavia's skies are completly undefended.Tomorrow i'll taste the Sosarbaja ones with a Port attack with my Nells, escorted by some zeros(want also to see if there are surface units anchored in that big port).

Raids

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

While the CODE 1 procedes smoothly, the KB2 smashes through the allied communication lines between Palmyra and Canton. It's running out of bombs, avio fuel and fuel, so tomorrow it will be his last attack. then , whatever happens, it will go back to Truk. My fear is that his CVs can come in. If this happens now i'm just screwed ..... Buti'm a gamble...and now it's time to risk!

Ok, now i'm really running out of fuel.Gotta go back. It's a pity...there were many many other ships to sink... BTW i'm nearly 200 allied ship sunk, vs. my 16. Not bad.
He's trying to break the pocket at Homan....we'll see what we can do for it.

A Big Convoy that anchored at PM today got smashed by my bombers based at Rabaul[:D]
