What do I have to do to advance my status from Recruit to Trooper, etc?

Make enough posts [:D] And no, I do not know how many you have to make to achieve a given rank.

I can't remember what it took to get my first "star" - but I recently got my second on the 101st post.

I think it'll be awhile before I see another star - probably need to get to 500 or so posts.

Nomad, I know that this is off topic, but refering back to another post, X-Com Terror From The Deep was one of the first games (along with Panzer General and SP) that got me hooked on the 'bonding with your troops' behaviour.

Happy days!

Cheers!

Well - we're kinda cross-threading here ... but ... we are gaining rank points ...

I was addicted to the first XCOM title when it came out, when i finally got ahold of Terror, my system was too advanced to run it. [:(]

Apocalypse is worth checking out if you're a fan of the series.
Combat is selectable between turn-based or real time.

And for the ultimate in character bonding - check out NetHack.
I have an Elven Ranger standing outside the Wizard's Tower as I type this.

Evidently it's somewhere before 500, as can be deduced through my stats (on another note, when did I write so much? Yikes! It has been a couple of years though...)

I've got a version of the original XCOM that has been adjusted to work in Windows.
I have it installed in my XP machine and it works great.

I don't think I'll ever get rid of that game............... or SPWaw for that matter.

Hey MajorMess - nice to see you posting again.

As far as what will run under XP - I cannot say for sure.
I play too many DOS games to give up a Win98 based system.

As far as I can tell - get a real video card to run games under XP.
An onboard S3/Savage isn't exactly DirectX compatible and causes problems.

I've managed to install it under XP (using win 98 mode for install.exe) but after this the game didn't start. [:(]

AAAAh...

Mr Gates....food for thought...an OS that's backwards compatible and will allow all manner of 'older' games to be played as native!?.......FAT CHANCE?

I would love to be able to play X-Com on my new machine....(actually I haven't tried yet....let's give it a whirl!)

Keep you posted.

Cheers!

To those of you who miss the old UFO, try downloading a DOS emulator such as DOSBOX.

Note that the emulation can be quite slow! There are some options to increase speed in most emulators. The fastest I know of is DOSEMU which runs solely under Linux.

The old UFO games can be downloaded from www.abandonia.com , including a new (free) version, UFO2000, which basically extends the UFO and XCOM:TFTD games with a multiplayer mode.

Did the DOS Emulator work for you?
I'll have to remember that if it did, should I ever be forced to work in XP.
