A world at war

World in Flames is the computer version of Australian Design Group classic board game. World In Flames is a highly detailed game covering the both Europe and Pacific Theaters of Operations during World War II. If you want grand strategy this game is for you.

A world at war

Post by Froonp »

Hello,

I hope that this new about Matrix acquiring rights to produce Bruce Harper’s A World At War will have no bad consequences on the MWiF developpement.

By the way, how close (or far) are we from actually seeing this developpment start ?

Thanks for your answers.

Best Regards

I think GMT has done a poor job of marketing because A3R and ERS have been superseded by Bruce Harper's A World at War. A3R is an archaic design from 20 years ago, why would we compare A3R to WiF ?

I played WiF to death (up to the 6th Edition) and now, as far as strategic boardgames go, i play A World at War almost exclusively.

You can see more of A Word at War at http://aworldatwar.com

Based on MButtazoni's five star ranking, as well as the difficulty in creating a faithful adaptation of WiF that is PBEM suitable, I fear Matrix may decide there isn't room for two such games. I hope I'm wrong! At any rate, since AWAW is more directly turn-based, and therefore much more PBEM suitable, I believe we will see that released first. Correct me if I'm wrong please.

What a tragedy if we never see computer WiF.

David Heath assured us in another thread that there will be no effect on the WiF development ("two different design teams" he said).

As far as the Bruce Harper game, I dunno. WiF has its own "feel" as a strategic simulation that is fine, but more steeped in the old SPI WWII mega-games. A3R and ERS remain high on my current play list, mostly because of the innovatively abstract game mechanics and quarterly turns (dating all the way back to the AH orginal 3R in the seventies) for handling air and naval warfare and sweeping strategic campaigns (including amphibious invasions). I also continue to like the way production is handled through BRPs.

For those reasons, plus the $175 price tag, I have not bought AWaW. When the computer version comes out someday, I probably will buy that, but, to be honest with you, paper-and-cardboard WiF and A3R/ERS are perfectly satisfactory for me (and the gaming club I belong to) for now.
Put my faith in the people
And the people let me down.
So, I turned the other way,
And I carry on anyhow.

Hi Guys

Here it right from me. Matrix Games signing of A World At War in no ways effects our current plans for World in Flames.

Good thing you're telling this, and I'm looking forward at playing both, and Gary Grisby's World at War too.
Thanks.

Macgowan

Does anyone else think it's interesting that Roger Macgowan, the artist who did the box cover to WiF, also does the box for Harper's AWaW? The variable scale at least seems very reminisent of ADG's game. Roger seems to have found a certain niche!

check the end of the scenario part of the rules, where the credits are listed.

also, there is a nice profile of his contributions to the industry on GMT's site:

I don't think we'll see CWiF anytime soon. I think they're waiting for us to get bored and go away.
They do say, Mrs. M, that verbal insults hurt more than physical pain. They are, of course, wrong, as you'll soon discover when I stick this toasting fork in your head.

The Matrix story on MWiF has been the same for the last three months.
When Flashpoint Germany ships then MWiF Development will kick into high gear.
Till then there is little news for Matrix to give
