Mods

Post by Kuokkanen »

Some time ago I was upkeeping list of mod sites: URLs and general information. I have been away some time, so could someone make up similar list so I can catch up again. Also information what version of Starshatter is required to use those mods, missions and what ever available. I order full version for sure, but not today.
You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

Starshatter Central is the key!

Post by Diabolico »

I sugest you try Starshatter Central as all mods currently supported by their creators (and any new mods are sure to find their way there... [;)]) are archived there.
You just need to register for free in order to download. Check it out! All mods are available from the downloads page!

Dude, where's Goddess Fleet, Cold Space, Project 7, Black Genesis, BattleTech, Stargate and what all the mods were under work?

All those people seemed to have "disapeered" from the scene even though some seem to take a new interest in this game they once played.
Starbuck, for instance seemed to have surfaced and with luck we will have a complete 70's series BSG mod in dat format, ready to use and ready for MP.

Don't forget that there is currently no other place on the Starshatter comunity - other than SS central that can host mods for free (DamoclesX's B5 mod is over 400 mb - making it bigger than SS's current instal file + the 4.03 patch update).

Starshatter Central is a repository for everything that is SS related... and if you care to catch up with this forum's and SS Central's forum you will see that I have appealed the SS comunity to bring forward all the old mods (preferably in DAT format so everybody can use them and can MPlayer with it).
We already have some interesting mods like Damocles's B5, Melkor's SW - just to name a few.
I hope eventually to have all of them available on SS Central, as soon as their owners wish to have them available for download.

Well Dude, as far as I am concerned, the only good mods are the ones that exist now or the ones that are beeing created now, the ones that we can reasonably expect them to become available...
All those projects seem very cool but other than variations of already existing mods (like Melkor's SW 5 mod - wich will get more ships, among others), I only know of Starbuck's 70's BSG mod and Damocles's "New Show" BSG mod.

Yet if you could get hold of the people on those mods you just mentioned, convince them to resume work, I can offer them free hosting and distribution of their work to a growing comunity.[8D]

Eh? .DAT files don't work with demo. I have money to buy Starshatter right now, but then I would need request money from my father for food. And he would ask: "Where did your money go so fast?" I guess he would be upset for my reply [8|]

Thanks man, I get on it right away. All right, where's that Dragon Lady's e-mail address...

And Damo, what happened to your Project 7?

Dragon Lady's mod site and e-mail address are down. seawolf156's site for Shattered Planet is still up but there isn't any files available. When it was last updated? I sent e-mail to him and it didn't bounce immediately back, so there is chance he might answer to it.

Mehrunes has Freespace mod going on and he has posted around here past month. Hey Mehrunes, what's your status? Did Pheagey had anything going on? Does anyone remember who is responsible about Black Genesis? Site is down. What else... StarCraft. Who was at it? Pheagey, what has happened to your Starshatter Dev v2? Lots of cool stuff was there...

Excellent work Matty! Keep it up![:D]
Motivation is the best driver for most people![:-]
Remember though that the goal in modding should ultimately provide mods that can :

1. easily be used by everyone, special people with little computer knowledge and no dev experience (the guy that buys this game doesn't necessarily know how to dev);

2. be played on MultiPlayer (MP) games.

So far, only the .Dat format can offer this because :

a) All you have to do is to put the .dat file inside the root folder, start the game and enabled it from the options tab and "presto"!
This is so intuitive that anybody can do this.

b) The .dat format is the only one you can play MP with.

Put a better use to your modding hours and make sure that in the end you compress it to the .dat format, so everybody can use it and play MP with it.
That's what I mean when requesting modders to make .dat versions of their awesome work.
I want the guy that buys this game, either on the shelves or by digital download, to just put the .dat inside and enable it from the options/mod tab. Period! Nothing more simple than this!
Now, putting the def files inside the mod folder, editing a copy of the exe file, that is complicated for some (it was for me and I couldn't have done it without DamoclesX's help - thanks Damocles![;)]).

Besides... you'll probably buy the full version soon enough... [;)]

Small scale mods (in size) could be both as .DAT and .ZIP so all players can use them (.ZIP version for demo and single player). I don't know any excuse not to use .ZIP than additional disk space.

Let me twist from very thick wire: in addition of mod data files being compressed to .DAT file, data files could be compressed as .ZIP file. With data files I mean .DEF, .MAG, .PCX and that sort of files. Those can be used in demo versions but not for multiplayer.

Dont worry, ssc will never have any sort of requirment to use dat format for mods on site off site linked or anything.

Diab is just addicted to it cause he is to lazy to figure out how to use uncompressed mods:)

Good to hear. Might you get some mods (which are compatible with demo) as non-DAT format? And what the heck happened to your Project 7?
