pcgamer review

Battles In Normandy is the third game in the Decisive Battles game series. Battles in Normandy recreates all aspects of the Normandy campaign, from the landings on the first day to the final climax of the campaign at Falaise. Strategic Studies Group rewrote the Decisive Battles game engine for Battles in Normandy with a host of new special rules for amphibious and airborne operations, plus a huge number of other enhancements.

pcgamer review

Post by mlees »

I received my February issue of PCGamer magazine in the mail yesterday, and inside was a review of BIN on page 75.

PCGamer gave the game an 81% score. This, to me, is a good score, especially for what the gaming industry considers a "niche" game. I have come to give credence to the magazine, and the opinions of it's reviewers, and while I don't own this particular game from Matrix, I think an "Atta boy" is deserved to those who helped produce and test.

Atta boy!

BTW, they gave Tin Soldiers: ATG an 89% review, same magazine, same page.

Atta boy!

Quotes from PCGamer:

First paragraph:

"Strategic Studies Group (BIN developer) has been building wargames almost as long as Silicon Valley has been building computers. Their Carriers at War and Panzer Battles are some of the best games ever made, in any genre. In 2003, SSG amazed us once again with the release of Korsun Pocket, a slick, detailed depiction of combat in the Second World War that begged for a west front follow-up. Now the begging can cease, because that follow-up is here."

The five paragraph review is so short because it had to share the same page with another review (of Tin Soldiers).

The author/reviewer was Mr. Mark H. Walker. He score the game at 81%, which is an "80-90=excellent" score. He writes of an "unintuitive" (or awkward?) interface in regards to selecting units, no mouse-over tool tips, "initially daunting" combat routine, and lack of printed manual. Those were his only "negatives".

I don't have this title, but those "negatives" are definately not game breakers by anyones standards.

His last sentence: "It's a must-have for any West Front aficionado."

Sounds like a "thumbs up" to me...[:)]

Isn't it sort of a conflict of interest for developers to review games?

I didn't know he was a developer... of PC games, anyway (he designed the Lock `n Load boardgame, I know).
