SPWAW General Edition

Post by Al Boone »

Does the SPWAW General Edition contain all 4 megacampaigns with all current upgrades installed? In other words, do we have to install MCLV 1.1 ourselves or are all the most recent versions of each Megacampaign included? It is inferred from the item description that the only extra item needed to fully upgrade everything is SPWAW version 8.3? I assume that one can install the General edition, add version 8.3 and have everything properly installed and all 4 megacampaigns up to date. While I own all 4 megacampaigns, I would buy the General Edition just for the convenience, if the above is true. Of course it would be nice if previous buyers of the 4 Megacampaigns would get a discount, but I am sure that that would require records and bookkeeping beyond reason.

I think that GE contains all four MC, with patches, plus 8.2. You have to DL the 8.3 patch, whcih I think was produced after GE.

The only issue is that the MC have not been updated to work with 8.3, so many of us keep older versions of the game (remember that Desert fox came out in the days of version 5. I retain v 7.1, which seems to deal reasonably with the earlier MC.

Yes, the General's edition has the latest of everything including patches for the four mega campaigns. Version 8.3 is another issue completely and can be loaded after loading the General's Edition.

Biil, Kokado seems to say that we can not properly play some or all of the three earlier megacampaigns with the General's edition, eg version 8.2. Do you know if any of the 3 earlier megacampaigns are compatable with version 8.2 and version 8.3, when it is added to the General's Edition? Do I have to go back to an earlier edition such as 7.1 or 5.1 to properly play these 3 earlier megacampaigns?

I can't say for sure, Al. I haven't tried them. I'm recuperating from some serious surgery to my left arm and once I can ease off the pain killers, I'll run through a few scenarios in each and see. I do remember playing some Watchtower with no apparent ill effects.

Thanks Bill! I really would appreciate any information on compatability of the first 3 megacampaigns with version 8.2 and version 8.3. I own all of the megacampaigns, but I would buy the General's edition if all the megacampaigns worked with the General's edition. Does anyone else also have an information on this matter?????

I've been perusing reports from players and so far all the MCs seem to be working well with the General's Edition...WB

I,m knew to Spwaw but not to wargames. Just loaded the free download.

What does the game purchased from Matrix offer differently from the free download? Or, maybe the question should be what is missing from free download? Being a lover of a good game, I would be willing to pay for the generals edition.

One thing I noticed is I can't control the volume from within the game. Thanks in advance for your reply.

Basically it contains the freedownload PLUS four Mega Campaigns, which in themselves are a magnificent gaming experience. I recommend you read up on them on the Matrix site and then consider if you would like to make the investment.

I think Wild Bill already answered your question generally, but my reasons for purchasing the General's Edition are a little different. I downloaded the free version about two years ago and played it pretty much nonstop. After playing it so much and getting that much enjoyment out of the game, I figured I owed it to Matrix Games for rewriting the code for Windows and purchased the General's Edition even though I haven't really played any of the campaigns yet. I'm still too busy playing user campaigns and scenarios!

You can ALT-TAB out and adjust it during game play. My kids use the computer during the day and crank up the volume so I always have to switch out and drop it way down when I play at night. It hasn't been a big issue for me.

Noble reason, Tyrone! Thank you. That is JUST the kind of support that Matrix needs at this juncture. As for me, I personally appreciate it very much. You and other faithful supporters give us the incentive to go on.

Al, yes they all work. Is everything perfect in all of them? No. Is it enough of a difference to cause any problems? Not in my opinion. You may wind up with the occasional oob glitch, but overall it is a non issue.

If you REALLY want to make them play as they were actually designed, you would need version 5.0 or 5.3 for Desert Fox, version 7.1 for Lost Victories and Watchtower and version 8.0 for Screaming Eagles. This means 3 separate installs but with 100 gig HD's getting to be standard equipment, what's 5 gig or so for all of that fun?

Those older versions can be found out there, usually someone who is a bit of a die hard will have quite a collection, Greybeard over at the Blitz is one that comes to mind.
